...Actually, we do!
Some of you may remember when we did this
before. It was pretty fun and a decent amount of people played. Well, Jaramr has convinced me to start it up again. With my new and improved FIOS internets and a quad core processor with too many RAMs, I figured 'why not?'
What is Freelancer?Freelancer is a game by Digital Anvil and published by Microsoft Game Studios. The official website is
here, where you can apparently download a free trial. I don't think trial users can join this Game On, though.
"Experience a vast, open-ended universe filled with an infinite number of adventures. You are the freelancer Edison Trent, an intergalactic jack-of-all-trades. Your mission: whatever you want."
That's right: your mission is to do
whatever the hell gets your rocks off -
in space! And who is this Edison Trent guy you ask? This badass motherfucker right here:
Unfortunately you don't actually get to walk around shooting people with a retarded grip on your personal sidearm. Instead you fly around in space and pew pew pew with one of hundreds of awesome space ships. Or, if you're particularly non-violent you can do trade - buy low and sell high in the various regions of space.
The game is very easy for non-space sim veterans to get into. The interface is minimal and the controls are all done with the mouse (with optional additional keyboard controls):
Sweet, but what's this Discovery mod?
You get to join NASA in sweet missions going to and from the ISS to do science experiments in space!
No, not really. It's a mod that adds a whole assload of ships to fly. Lots of famous ships from various SciFi shows, movies, anime, etc. They have also improved the graphics a lot. It almost looks like a game that came out 5 years ago instead of 9 years ago. To sum it up, this is why we are using the Discovery mod:
Great! So how do I join?
First, you need to have Freelancer installed. Done? Good. Next you need to head over to the
Discovery downloads page to get the mod. Download version
4.85. You should also get Freelancer Mod Manager, also located on the downloads page, to make it super easy to install. Once FMM is installed, just double-click on the file you downloaded from the Discovery site, then in FMM activate the mod. Don't activate anything else, though, or the server will think you're a dirty cheater and kick you out of the club.
There are servers online! What the hell?!
That's right! Microsoft shut down the Freelancer master list server years ago, but now instead of having to do a bunch of crap to see some servers, Discovery includes a list of some servers!
Unfortunately, they do not include mine. So you still have to do a little bit of crap to make it work.
- Go to your Freelancer 'EXE' directory (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE)
- Right-click on 'dsupdate.cfg' and go to properties, uncheck read-only
- Open 'dsupdate.cfg' in notepad or another text editor
- Add -squad-dmg.teamtiki.com:2302 to the end of the list of servers that look similar, but before the updateserver=1 line
- Save the file
You should now see
[PA] Wanglancer Discovery on the server list. If not, re-read the steps and see where you made a mistake, or post here and complain.
Note: PVP is enabled on this server! If enough people complain about it I'll turn it off, but otherwise make sure you aim correctly, doofus!Where are the stats? You said there would be stats!
I never said that. Anyways there is some sweet new web page being developed that makes stats/account management super awesome. I'll be putting it up eventually, and then I will put a link here.
Go forth and travel to stations that are not run by the people who represent them!

This game is completely awesome, and so is the disco mod.
The discovery mod adds quite a large number of ships, both lots of ships from sci fi, and ships based on the vanilla models.
So yes, this is awesome, lets play it.
Works perfectly on Vista, and Windows 7
Why did you have to make this thread and tempt me...

Also, did I mention I love this game? God bless you for making a Let's Play of it.
Lastly, I can confirm that the game does work on Win 7. I have had problems getting Discovery to work though... but I'm not sure if that's because I tried installing other mods before Discovery. I may have to uninstall and reinstall.
I might do that for nostalgia's sake.
I have not had issues with this on Win7 64-bit. Of course, I only have Discovery installed and nothing else.
Also the default starting money is 8500 creds. Votes could change this.

One thing I noticed playing on the server... the bad guys seem to "stutter": they jump from place to place. I'm imagining it must be lag, but it definitely steps up the difficulty of the bad guys significantly when they appear and disappear spontaneously. I got vic'd by a level 1 difficulty mission as a result.
EDIT: D'oh... it probably was my fault. I just realized that Steam is running in the background, and it's downloading Civ 4 and the expansions again. That probably killed my bandwidth. Just as well, I should get some sleep. I'll swing on tomorrow when there's some fellow freelancers on.
well, we don't
but we have a relationship with the people who do
Ctrl + V, I think. Or was it Ctrl + H? One of those two.
I actually quite liked the universe they built for it. There's quite a lot of history and neat tidbits of info scattered all over, which I found pretty cool.
I think about that, and then I go back to trying to navigate the menu system in X3, and I get very sad.
Freelancer... just worked, and worked brilliantly. I never once have found myself wishing I was using a joystick playing Freelancer... and even if I didn't have a keyboard, I probably wouldn't miss that either. I'm surprised that their awesome control scheme is so infrequently emulated.
Speaking of lonely... there's pretty much been no-one all day. Maybe it would be better if we used one of the public servers and just made a group in there? Space'll be a little less empty that way... on the U.S. Reunion server, there seems to be a solid 60+ people on there most times.
Will be on as soon as I'm done with work.

Also newb tips.
Good initial money maker.
Mine helium from behind eries, and sell it to philidelphia station. In a rhino you make about 123k a trip.
Also to transfer money between characters, /givecash name amount. Has to be at least 100,000, and you can send it to offline people(including your other characters).
So /givecash Morkath 100,000
Of course, the other alternative is to try to convince the person running the server to tweak the mission payouts file. Somewhere between 5x and 10x tends to work out fairly well. Especially since parties split mission rewards, and since Discovery's content can start to get ludicrously expensive.
Ill be on our server around 4:00 or so EST.
Going to start with a few missions to get myself in a Rhino, then the trade route running begins. God I'm looking forward to this.

Don't forget that it takes like 20minutes to finish a level 1 mission in the starflyer. Damn ai using bots and nano's.
I promise, Jaramr, that this weekend I will finally actually play.
Utilizing this scheme, you can net yourself a much more powerful ship after an afternoon or so of grinding (I know, grinding sucks... but this time it's worth it). Once you've gotten 2-4 million from it, you're ready to make a death star-like trench run to wherever you want to go to get whatever ship/bomber you want to get, and the high end weapons with which to make battles quicker and more decisive.
You won't be able to afford a cap ship unless you do this farming for *quite* some time, but at least you can go out and do real missions without fear of being blown into bits while your lasers bounce harmlessly off of their seemingly endlessly regenerating shields and hull.
This is also where PA having a private server is nice... because in the Roleplaying server they have rules against what ships you're allowed to fly based on some roleplaying junk. I'm a fan of roleplaying and all, but I don't want my choice of ship to dictate where in the universe I'm allowed to fly. We'll be much more free on this server to do what we want.
What I want happens to involve buying a GC Very Heavy Fighter, because they're so pretty.
I have to admit that I was just going to run on the "official" server, but after being in there tonight I realized that they're way too strict to allow for the possibility of fun. I was flying with a guy who happened to have more than one ID on him (he didn't know you're not allowed to by RP rules), and a mod literally came by and chewed him out for it. I'm probably lucky that I had sold my Kusari ship before he showed up (so I could buy a Rhino to do the mining run mentioned above), he probably would've banned me for having a Kusari ship in Liberty territory. Screw that, let's just have fun and be free to roam the galaxy. I'll be continuing my future efforts entirely on the PA server from now on.
Okay, so this is a long shot, but what if we used your server to do "fantasy matchups"? For example, give everyone on the server ~1 billion $ to start with so they can buy a capital ship (or whatever ship they want) and outfit it, and then we arrange to have a gigantic capital ship match between everyone that we can cram onto the Penny Arcade server. Imagine 20-50 capital ships in a no holds barred last man standing blast fest. I think it'd be awesome.
Basically, we could use your server as a means with which to get to the core of the awesome things that - deep down inside - we all *really* want to do in Freelancer but couldn't otherwise.
I think it would be brutally awesome, and would give a good reason to jump on the PA server. We could do all sorts of themes:
* Capital Ship Combat night (the one mentioned above, arrange to have everyone meet in a certain sector at a certain time)
* Faction combat (everyone splits off into even factions, and then chooses whatever ship they want - Capital or otherwise - from their faction. Again, everyone meets at a certain sector at a certain time for a big team brawl: the last faction standing wins)
* "Flay the Fighter" - One person is elected to be "the fighter", and pilots any class of fighter ship of their choosing. They hide in some known sector, and everyone else is then unleashed on that sector to find and hunt him down. Whoever finds and kills the fighter wins.
I think with things like that going on, it'd be totally awesome. Give it consideration! Leave roleplaying to the roleplaying servers... we'll take epic capital ship battle royales.
But if you can organize it, I'll set it up and play it.
