Ok so I have a serious dilemma. I have two job offers right now to choose from. One is a retail job where I have good connections and offers a great pay based on those connections. The other job is working for the local wargaming store. This job has potential to grow if the owner expands. The issue is the pay. It is about $4 less an hour, but that doesn't take into account the possibility of commission, as that has not been nailed down yet. It has the potential to increase my wage by about $500 a month from what I know of the store.
So here is the ultimate question, do I take the higher paying job or the job that pays less but is hella cool.
I do have a family to take care of here as well. The game store job would require a second part time job possibly. Essentially the standard of living would be lower, but I would be happier as a result.
Well it actually does have a high value for the future as the plan is to take over running the store as he expands. Based on the area I live in, I think that running a store as the manger would provide enough for my family.
wargaming store is not really something valuable for future careers
you want a cool/fun job in the end for a career, but right now take your "licks" and get the better paying job that has some future value to it
What you say makes sense, but his other choice is a retail job. Its not exactly a career either.
koconutmonkey, what would the hours be like? Distance from home?
Ok so the game store is 2 blocks away, the retail store is a few miles away. The hours for the retail would be 8-4:30 m-f, the game store would be two ten hour days during the week and then firday and saturday night.
Go for the cool job. Take it from somebody about to leave a well paid but shit job*: money is in no way everything.
*Look about two topics down, actually
Didn't see that when I posted this. Good luck to you there.
I am leaning towards your answer as I have been working for 10 years now. My life tends to be better when my job is either easy as hell or really fun. The game store happens to be both!

You've answered your own question there. Go for the wargaming store. You say your life will be better and that's there's a chance you can make more money and even run the store one day.
Friend of a friend situation here. My dad knew a guy who worked at a bottleing plant for Budweiser. It payed extremly well, with great benefits. He hated it. All he did was watch and make sure the caps fit on the bottles. He hated his job, had no pride in it, and was lame as can be.
A worse job may make you more money, but unless that extra money will make up you happy despite a job you hate, is it really worth it?

I agree with this totally, unless you need more money for some pressing reason (family, college, etc) you'll be overall much happier with a job you enjoy. Your their 40 hours or so a week and doing something you dislike for more money just isn't worth it.
I was in this situation after college. I took the "fun" job. I think it was the right choice. Granted, the "fun" company quickly started having financial problems and I ended up fleeing to the "unfun" company in the end. But, I still think it was the right choice at the time. It was a cool place to work.
That's the classic choice. The trick is to find a job you like that pays well
Money isn't everything, but it is important. If you can pay your bills and see a future in the job that's more fun/interesting to you, then you should do that. After all, if work doesn't seem like work, it's easy to go.
Conversely, if you take the job and you really want to do well in it, you'll probably do more than just laze around. If you do actually run the business in the near future, there's a lot more that goes into that than just showing up, and taking a job that's similar to your hobbies also means that you can get sick of your hobbies, leaving you little to do to unwind.
It sounds like you'd already decided, though. Just don't think of it as easy, and actually work -- that way, you're likely to be more successful if these future plans pan out.
Cool thanks for the advice so far. It is so far on par with what I am thinking. It is so hard to leave that kind of money on the table, but I think I am going to take the plunge and if it doesnt work out then I will beg and grovel later...

This goes along with my question which is How financially secure is the Wargaming shop? I've seen them come and go pretty quickly up here. I'd personally be leary turning down a good paying job for a gaming shop.

Well the store has been in business for 6 years. Considering the town thats amazing. I have seen about 10 shops close within an hours drive during that time frame...
He has the atmosphere and the gaming events to sustain the business. I know that, baring a disaster, he will be expanding not contracting soon.
If you were single, I'd have reccomended you decide whether it's more important to make less money but have a more satisfying job or tolerate a job you are less enthused with for higher pay (that could pay for more things that you enjoy).
However with a family, you really need to put them first and do what you can to provide them with the most your ability allows for. You will be much happier down the road.
I took the game store job. The pay ended up, with commission being enough that it would pay the bills. I start tomorrow, but I have already been in there a few days just hanging out while my wife is gone. I love it so far and I think I have made the right decision. thanks for the help people
