Sleep is a thing I enjoy. Thankfully I can't ever say I've suffered from insomnia, quite the opposite - I'm pretty capable of falling asleep just about anywhere, any time - save for the usual rare bout of stress insomnia.
Remember, this is essentially a nightly occurrence, so alcohol isn't going to cut it, unless I want to die of liver failure instead of heart failure...
are you eating a relatively balanced diet? maybe your iron is low or something. i seem to recall that one of my friends upon becoming a vegetarian had immense trouble sleeping due to anemia brought on by a suddenly imbalanced diet (she didn't become a vegetarian very intelligently even by vegetarian standards. just cut out meat and ate salads for a while)
What are the circumstances of your poor sleeping habits? I've found adjusting my routine before I turn in has a marked effect on my immediate sleep success or failure.
Started about 9 months ago, decided to try jogging to cure it but didn't really help. Now when I sleep I basically lie in a bed about 10 hours and sleeping maybe half that.
The only way to get a good night sleep for me is to stay up until I collapse and fall asleep, but that's not a pleasant experience and also messes up your schedules something fierce.

Opposite for me. I used to have trouble sleeping when I wasn't getting exercise. Now I work out for an hour or two and am all tuckered out and sleep like a child of young age.
My sleep troubles are almost universally related to a brain that won't turn off.
My diet is generally impeccable, and I exercise frequently. I just always have racing thoughts; maybe I'm bipolar?
Sounds like a basic anxiety disorder; have you gone to a psychiatrist at all?
Actually, no. I've seen doctor-doctor's, but not a psychologist. Maybe I should make an appointment.
I'd like to point out, as subtly as possible, that I wasn't necessarily looking for advice, although I do appreciate any real advice anyone has offered or may offer. The real purpose of this thread, however, was purely to bitch and whine.

Already have. Was told to stop watching TV at night, stop eating 3 hours before bedtime and take a melatonin an hour before I want to be asleep.
All have failed.
So go back and say 'Hey that shit didn't work. Now what'
And maybe they'll give you some drugs.
I tried that once, and he told me to try Valerian root and tea (which I already drink by the gallon). Valerian failed so miserably that I think it actually kept me awake longer.
I just haven't bothered to go back to him again. Maybe I need a new doctor...

Yeah, doctors usually go for the easy fixes first because they work for most people. But sometimes it doesn't work, and giving them the extra information helps them diagnose you better. They are not omniscient... generally.

Your doctor sucks, go to one who doesn't suck
Also bitching and moaning about a fixable problem and then being like 'Dudes I didn't want advice I just wanted to bitch and moan' is totally my schtick.

House would have known immediately what to do... Or have removed my spleen...
Monday nights I usually have a late volleyball game that starts around 10:20. I don't get home before 12:30 and by the time I've changed and showered it's usually 1:00am or thereabouts. Always tired but never sleepy. That's easily the worst night's sleep I get every week, getting up at 7am the next morning is no fun. Although it could be a lot worse, I used to need to be up by 6.

Also I have a relatively normal sleep pattern now. I used to do the whole wacky college fucked up sleep pattern thing but fuck that. It did horrible, horrible things for my mental health. Now I generally get between 5-8 hours per night. I don't stay up all night working on something unless I absolutely have to because I just go insane by the morning.

Any suggestions?

Go to a general practitioner
say "i have anxiety problems and can't sleep"
he will give you xanax
I am absolutely going to try this tonight. I'll report back with results of my experiment tomorrow.
