[Gamecube On]GC games I missed the boat on?

NswyersNswyers Registered User regular
edited January 2007 in Games and Technology
So, I've got with me here a used copy of Metroid Prime that I picked up for $20 today at EBGames. I also, on the recommendation of a certain thread, picked up a Wavebird controller for $38--all to play on my Wii.

As you can probably tell, I didn't get in on the Gamecube while the gettin was good; however, now I want to make up for it. The steady flow of new Wii releases is neither steady, nor a flow, and I plan to get a good portion of GC games that I might like in the meantime to tide me over.

As of right now, I plan on getting:

Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Animal Crossing

Could you kind folks recommend some other games I might enjoy, or maybe you have some words of discouragment for my choices above?

Here is the gyst of my taste for games:

I enjoy almost any RPG: I love to be able to build a character and see it develop. I've always been a fan of nearly anything Mario. First person shooters are swell, but there has to be something unique about them (Metroid, for instance). I don't have anything against puzzle games, but I've never really gotten into any at great length. Racing is OK, but I don't know that I'd like one enough to want to own it. Lastly, sports games I'd rather rent for when a few friends come over--I would rarely play one by myself.

Any advice you guys might have would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to toss in Tales of Symphonia. (60+ hours, so be ready for that.)

Resident Evil 4 is the finest game on the Gamecube. If you don't have it on the PS2 and don't mind gore, get it ASAP. The other two Gamecube exclusive Resident Evils (The Resident Evil 1 Remake & Resident Evil 0) are both decent games as well.

Looks like a pretty stellar RPG. One question: is there an inventory system in the game? Do you find items, weapons, armor on enemies and in shops to equip? From the screenshots I get the feeling it's pretty much just a story driven combat game with no management of the characters. Tell me I'm wrong.

    Of those,
Yellow ones play mostly like traditional JRPGs.
Blue ones are pretty much just dungeon crawling action RPGs. Incredibly boring single player to me, though multi is alright. And Ep. III blows.
Orange ones aren't so much RPGs as they are farm simulators. Fun though.
Red is a badass Strategy RPG
Cyan are weird card collecting/battling games that happens real-time.
Purple is more like a Mana game than Final Fantasy. Single player isn't too fun, multi is pretty cool, but each person needs a GBA and Cubelink cable.

    Hope that helps.

I as well would suggest Resident Evil 4.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I played 4-player Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles with some friends once, and we found it to be pretty boring. Doesn't it seem like the only real way to attack is to just get near an enemy, hold down the button to charge up your attack and lock onto the enemy, and then release to attack the enemy?

Four Swords was pretty neat, though. You need GBA's (or GBA SP's) and link cables to play multiplayer on that, too, though.

I hear the term JRPG on these boards a lot. I'm assuming that refers to Japanese RPGs.. moreso Final Fantasy inspired combat?

I was a huge Harvest Moon fan since the SNES days. 'A Wonderful Life' lacked a bit of the farm simulation that I liked so much with the earlier games, and I felt more emphasis was put on building relationships than actually having to manage your farm.

Also, the fact that I could get rich by using one specific technique soured me :(

So far great recommendations by and large.

Wait... you said you got Metroid Prime from EB for 20 dollars?

That game is a Player's Choice title, so it should be 20 dollars NEW.

It's 5.99 USED according to the site.

It plays like a standard JRPG except that combat is more action based. I don't know; I love JRPGs and couldn't get into it (gave up after the first 10 hours or so), but a friend of mine who hates JRPGs absolutely loves it and has gone through it multiple times (it has an unusually well done New Game+ mode).

If you're looking for JRPGs, I'd say the Gamecube isn't much of a platform. Paper Mario is fun, though rather easy and short. Fire Emblem is well Fire Emblem; if you like the GBAs ones, you should like it. The 2 Lost Kingdom games are very fun - they're Action/RPGs, but all of your moves are card based. Sounds weird, but it actually works out pretty well. Aside from those, I liked Summoner: A Goddess Reborn (an enhanced version of the PS2 Summoner 2); it's rough around the edges and a bit old by now, but it has some cool features.

Seriously, Resident Evil 4 is the best RPG on the system and the only thing that's even remotely RPG about it is the fact that your weapons have various stats like Power, Firing Speed, and Ammo Capacity that can be ugraded for cash.

I live in Canada, so the prices you pay for games varies quite a bit from the prices I pay up here. Most Gamecube games as new are still $30 or more.

Eternal Darkness is a can't miss.

F-Zero GX is one of the best racing games EVER.

The Metroids of course, the Zeldas, and Mario Sunshine (only if you're a fanboy).

Lost Kingdoms 1&2+ Baten Kaitos 1&2 are hit and miss, so I'd try them for cheap or rent first, unless you see them for like 10 bucks then grab em.

Unless you already own it on another console, Resident Evil 4 is MUST OWN. GET. THIS. GAME. The remakes of the old ones are all good, too.

Ikaruga is a must-have if you even remotely enjoy top-down shooters.

Super Monkey Ball 1+2 are fantastic for multiplayer, and single-player if you're into a puzzles.

I'll add more if I think of 'em.

Edit: I just read the part where you love RPGs, definitely check into the Lost Kingdom and Baten Kaitos series, and buy Fire Emblem ASAP.

Only skimmed, but here's a few that I think have been missed.
    • Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (needs bongos)
    • The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures (1P is okay, multi is fantastic but requires GBAs and links)
    • Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
    • Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
    • Viewtiful Joe
EDIT: And if you don't have it for any other system, Gladius is an excellent SRPG from LucasArts.

    There's one RPG missing:

Gladius. Gladiatorial Stratagy RPG. Also known as: Pure fun.

Yes, it is kinda cumbersome and repetitive... but what RPG isn't?

Mario Sunshine - awesome game. Don't listen to the haters.

F-Zero GX - the best racing game of all time period. Very difficult, but very fair.

Viewtiful Joe - awesome and really fun.

Skies of Arcadia Legends - really really good rpg

Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker - except for an item collectathon near the end of the game, it's super awesome.

Baten Kaitos is really good. There's some annoying JRPG bullshit stuck in there that bogs the game down a bit, but once you begin to understand the card system it's great. You'll be throwing out some incredible combos mid-way through the game. I never finished it, but it's definitely something I'll be picking up again.

F-Zero GX, Mario Sunshine, Skies of Arcadia Legends (I played it on the DC, but I understand they're very similar), Mario Kart and Wind Waker are all worthy additions to any GC library.
