I have a Windows Home Server and an XBOX 360, but the music streaming sucks since you can't sort by folder, and the video streaming sucks since it can't play Mpeg4 from my video camera.
I'm thinking of buying a PS3, and I want to know if any of you use a PS3 with a Windows Home Server? Or do you even just stream music and video from a share on any other Windows computer? Any complaints, or does it work well?
PS3s stream media damn well. Everything can he viewed in the same folder structure as on your computers hard drive (for the folders you select) or where there's program support (like for itunes for example) music can be shown by any category that program sorts it in (artist, albulm, song, composer, etc for itunes).
I use MediaLink to stream from my Mac. Hopefully someone else can tell you the best program/way to stream from a PC.
For streaming music to my PS3 I use XBMC, it has a upnp server built-in. I view WHS as overkill, I simply use my HTPC (runs XP Pro) which stores all my video and music. I'm currently mulling the idea of moving it over to Vista because the latest builds of XBMC support DXVA2 (which is Vista/Win 7 only)
I've never streamed video to my PS3 or 360 (well, before I had a HTPC I streamed some video via Windows Media Connect to the 360) because my HTPC with XBMC is lightyears better than the 360 or PS3's media capabilities.
If ever there was a legit port of XBMC to the 360 or PS3 I would be all over that. (say pay £5 on PSN store for a likely renamed XBMC)
If you're curious my HTPC has a AMD/ATI HD 4350 (passive cooling), AMD 5050e, a 1.5TB HDD in a nice Antec HTPC case.
Also, unlike the 360 a lot of games on the PS3 you can't simultaneously play music whilst you're playing. Although that said the only time I ever felt the need to do that whilst i'm playing a game was on Mass Effect on the 360 as after a while that goddamn in-game music just got grating.
EDIT: Also, you can use windows media player to stream music to your 360/PS3 as that also has a UPNP server. Anything that is UPNP capable can stream to your 360/PS3.
