Right, so it's a book I had to read in AP American Studies. I hated the class, but the book was pretty cool. However, I never got to finish it (decided to drop the class) and now I can't remember the name.
Plot points I recall!
-Book was set in revolutionary-ish times.
-Took place on a ship, I think it was called the USS Constitution or some similar title
-Story was a giant metaphor for the American Revolution or something, and the ship's name was tied into this.
-It was from the point of view of a deck hand/ship's boy who may have been black. I think he was trying to get away from his girlfriend so he took the ship job.
-The biggest point I remember was that the ship was carrying a God. Like, literally, in the hold. And there was some philosophical argument about how a God can't be self-aware. That really stuck with me and what makes me want to read more.
I've scoured the net with what I can but without author/title or even a good summary, I'm stuck.

@JHunz: Good to know someone else recognizes the plot. Did you have to read it for school too?
