Blackberry SIM Card use in Europe

So, my boss has a Blackberry that he needs to have work in Paris. We have a SIM card in another Blackberry that we've used in the past that works, but isn't necessary. If I put this SIM card in this other Blackberry, will it work, and will it have the same number? Or will it switch the number while it's on a GSM network? And if so, can I just bring it to a Verizon store and have it reformatted?

    What carrier is the Blackberry he wants to use through? If it's a GSM carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile), then the number is attached to the SIM Card, and you can place it in any unlocked GSM phone and have that number. It needs to be a quad-band phone to work abroad generally, which I believe all Blackberry's are (as long as they're GSM). But, then you mentioned Verizon (which operates on CDMA, not GSM).. so I'm confused.

    It's a Verizon phone, which apparently needs a SIM card to function in Europe. The SIM card is presumably GSM, which is why it needs one to run there.

    i assume you're using one of the Verizon world phones (blackberry Tour, Storm, or 8830), since these are the only ones that have a GSM radio (and therefore a Sim card) besides the CDMA radio... any other verizon blackberry and you're SOL, since they're CDMA only (and won't work outside of north america).

    Even if the verizon blackberry has a sim card, it's still a "locked" phone... they give you that Vodaphone Sim card b/c that's who they have roaming agreements with in Europe... to use this Sim card, you need to call Verizon and have them enable world calling (or something like that)... this will let your boss keep his current number, but at a very high per minute cost... and data is not guaranteed to work (so possibly, no email), but it is the easiest option.

    To use a different provider's (european pre-paid ones, for example), you'd have to unlock the phone. Verizon will unlock the phone for you FREE, if you call their international support line, and claim you're visiting rural mexico or uruguay or something, and will need to use a local SIM card since neither Verizon, nor their Vodaphone partner are available.

    Then purchase a sim card at your destination, stick it in, and enjoy cheap calling... BUT you'll have a local phone number, and again, no data unless you pay extra for a blackberry plan and set it all up.

    Hope that helped....

    Is Verizon going to give me a SIM card if I bring the card into a store, or are they going to charge me out the nose?

    no clue... all of my world blackberries came with vodaphone sim cards pre-installed. i'm sure if you call their international support line they'll hook you up. don't call regular support since it's full of idiots who will claim there's no such thing as a verizon phone with simcards, and europe doesn't use cellphones, and unlocking is illegal and will land you in jail.

    We're not all that stupid. Really :mrgreen:

    If you go into a store and ask for a SIM card, they're going to make you call Global Services (more than likely) to have them ship you a SIM. Since you already have one, this seems like a waste of time and energy.

    Assuming you want your bosses Blackberry to work with the same number while he's in Paris, you'll need to call VZW customer care and tell them you want to activate the SIM card you have in the different phone. Yes, this will work - the system just needs to know what the SIM number is so when we get the roaming back to us we know what to bill (rape) you for. Part of what the system does when a SIM is activated is it prompts the phone monkey to change the data plan as well to an unlimited overseas BB data packages - make sure you confirm with the phone monkey that it's been done as overseas data roaming w/o the actual package will make you end up with a bill that's $texas.

    And the CDMA-only BB's will work outside of North America... just not in that many places :}
