Earth Hour During PAX East

I don't know if it's come up for anyone else but we usually try very hard every year to participate in earth hour. As gamers we use a lot of power every day and we use that as a chance to turn everything, EVERYTHING off in the house, amazing how quiet it gets.....

Anyway, I noticed that earth hour happens to fall in the evening of the saturday of pax. are we going to be doing anything to mark this?

Suggestions?

I think the logistics for shutting down PAX with 40K+ people for 1hr because of some arbitrary "holiday" would be useless if not dangerous. Now if you want to set something up go ahead just don't expect exhibitors and people holding panels to turn off anything.

From what I read PAX without power would be like soap without the rope. Or pie without the coolwhip

Why are putting so much emphasis on the H?

Earth hour is useless. It only serves to make people that waste and pollute on a daily basis, feel validated by making them think they made a difference...

Not that this is true for all individuals mind you, but from what I've seen, it would be like and abusive husband having an "I love you hunny hour," where they don't beat their wife for 60 minutes.

Is anybody aware that it takes more power to power up a device than it does to just leave it on. By participating in Earth Hour, you're probably doing more harm than good.

...and that the science behind all of it is going down the shoota. Agree and lol'd at the 'I love you hunny hour' it's a farce, we need to simply trim our use of energy by using efficient appliances and alternative energy, if nothing else than to become energy independent. I for one am willing to promote tabletop gaming by candle light, play more RPGs!

Are we all in agreement that this was possibly the worst place to get people to care about Earth Hour? Saturday night is big concert night, there would be a fucking riot if you told people tht the first hour of the show ws cnceled so we could turn off the lights.

Earth is fine, and we aren't turning off shit.

I had a roommate a couple years ago that, when earth hour hit, demanded we shut off all the lights.

He then proceeded to light around a dozen candles all over the house (oblivious to any irony), and when that was done, went to go take a long twenty-minute hot shower because "well now i'm bored, there's not much else to do".

I wanted to facepalm hard enough to make my hand pass through my head, I'll tell you that.

I think it's nice, in theory, but just not going to happen at a convention of this size and type. People paid money to get in the convention and enjoy, exhibitors paid for power and booth space to show or sell their products, etc. To tell everyone to shut it down for an hour just isn't feasible.

Its never fun explaining a joke.

A Boston Oil Party makes fun of the Boston Tea Party where they threw it in the waters. Well, it is very bad to throw oil(like motor oil) into the ocean and since the discussion was about doing unearthly things on Earth Day...you should now understand my double entendre.

If you guys see me ask me to say Coolwhip in Stewie's voice. I have been told by sober and drunk people that my impression is spot on.

I also like doing the whole. "lois lois lois mom mom mom mamma mamma mum mum ma ma" thing.

Okay, I think the answer the OP is looking for is no, PAX will not be shutting down for an hour to accommodate Earth Day. No worries though, because in honor of Earth Day, PAX will shut down at 6pm Sunday 3/28 and will not restore power to PAX until Labor Day weekend in Seattle.

I don't believe there is any further discussion to render on this topic, so this thread is now locked. Thank you very much and have a pleasant evening.
