The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 7 and transferred my iTunes library from the old computer using an external hard drive. The transfer went fine and everything and when I went to sync my ipod a dialog box popped up saying that it was going to overwrite the iPod in order to sync it. I thought I would like to double check and make sure it had all my stuff first so I selected cancel and without thinking I checked the "do not ask me again" box on the dialog box. Long story short, I can no longer sync my ipod up with my iTunes library.
I tried resetting everything including the dialog boxes, sync history, iTunes store, and even went ahead and restored the iPod to factory default settings (which basically gives me a $250 paperweight), and even tried deleting the preferences files from the program files but nothing has worked. The dialog boxes do not reset and the iPod will not sync.
Does anyone have any suggestions for what I should try next? I don't know enough about windows 7 or iTunes to know if there is some sort of setting preventing me from resetting the dialog boxes or any such thing and nothing on the apple website is helpful (unless I want to pay $40).
When I plug in the ipod it appears on the side bar. The screen that shows up is the one that has always been there but when I clock the sync button nothing happens.
I've been trying to do some research on my own and I guess I am not the only one that this has happened to (according to the Apple forums anyway). I thought that maybe by doing a system restore it would zero everything out to back before I managed to mess everything up but I'd rather avoid that if at all possible.
Yep. It didn't do anything to help. What is especially frustrating is that by resetting the dialog boxes it should easily fix the problem but it doesn't seem to be working at all. Whether that is because some error or some weird interaction with another process I don't know.
That's on my list of things to try when I get home. The ultimate kicker is that I sold my old computor to my friend so I can't even try it with that. But I don't think it is a hardware issue since the ipod worked fine right up until I messed with everything. Shouldn't by turning it back to it's factory setting make it like I am plugging in a brand new ipod?
It probably isn't hardware, I just deal with these types of things all day at work (well, not iPod issues) that I like to try EVERYTHING.
It's probably something with Windows 7, since I had a similar issue when I bought a new computer. Though the fix was just authorizing the computer so I'm not sure what this could be.

I got it working again! Turns out in trying to reset the preferences I took it off auto-sync and when I didn't specify what it should sync instead of the whole library it didn't sync anything. Thank you for the help!

When you plug in your iPod, does it appear on the left-hand navigation pane? If it does, what do you see when you click on it?
