XBOX 360 connecting to wireless network

So i broke down and bought an XBOX last night, and i (idiotically) thought it came with a wireless adaptor. It does not, that costs an extra $100! So i was looking around for a cheaper alternative. What exactly should i look for? I don't want to drop 50-60 bucks on the wrong thing. I've seen a couple "wireless access points" (which all seem to be close to $100 or more), and my roommate uses a wireless printer hub (i think) do you guys have any recommendations?

Unless you absolutely cannot run an ethernet cable from your 360 to your PC (I mean some cables are like 50m and dirt cheap) then the official one is your only choice.

As far as I am aware it wont work with other generic hubs.

You can do a wireless bridge/access point, but that will be as expensive or more expensive as just buying the official card.

You can buy the Wireless adapter for the original Xbox, and it will work properly on the Xbox 360. I got one for like 35 bucks off eBay. You don't even need the disc it comes with, the 360 will recognize it as a wireless bridge as soon as it's connected and you can manually play with your IP settings/etc from the Xbox 360 dashboard. The only downside, and I don't know if this matters to you, is that the adapter is black and it doesn't look too pretty next to the white 360.

unfortunately, the internet hookup in my roommate's room down the hall, so i'd rather not have a cable running over there. I don't care about looks so much, especially if it will save me 65 bucks. To EBay!

Toad, my other roommate uses a 3rd party printer hub, and it works. however, it was $100

the original XBox wireless bridge (MN-740) works Perfectly Fine with the 360. They tell you no at the stores, but I am one of many who know this to be a fact.

And you can pick them up for about $60, maybe less if you find a used one at EB.

This is probably WAY too simple(i am networking retarded). But my computer uses a USB wireless adapter to connect to our network, i couldn't plug the XBOX into the ethernet port on the PC, could i? I forget how much that adaptor was, but i could probably use that/another one? It's a linksys.

Maybe i'll just hit up EB and look for the old XBox adaptor and cut my losses. I found a cheap access point (like 30 bucks) but i'd rather pay a little more and it be reliable.

Yes you could. You would then set up a bridged network or something similar.

Since there are some people here with the wireless adapter, do they support WEP settings? And if they do, what types?

GOD DAMMIT! So i broke down and bought a $100 adaptor because i only would have saved like $20 getting the other one. Plus it said it was designed for XBOX live (probably means nothing, other than a $20 price hike). So i get is set up, hook it up. I connect to the device, and the network...but no damn IP Address!!! It's set to automatic, anyone know what i should do to fix?

What wireless router do you have?

Sounds like my first issue (and why I went with the MN-740)....

i believe it is Netgear...unfortunately, that's kind of non-negotiable as it is my roommates.

The reason I asked is because a lot of routers that say "XBOX Live Compatible" may be compatible with the original XBL but not the 360.

This was my case with my D-Link, and I've heard the same from some Linksys users. The XBox 360 wireless dongle doesn't obtain an IP, but the original XBox wireless bridge (MN-740) may.

yeah, it's old skool Xbox live compatible. But the 360 connectivity isn't that different. The instructions said to set it to Auto IP though...and that dog wont hunt. Capnrico's post said to go static, so i'll try that when i get home. If that doesn't work, i'll just drink a LOT at happy hour.

I've never actually seen anyone complain about the router not functioning with their Xbox, but since you mention D-Link, I can believe it. They manufacture absolute garbage.

Does your [roommate's] router give out addresses via DHCP or are you guys all fancy and you've got static addresses?
