DSi XL - PAX Release

Since the DSi XL is releasing the last day of PAX, is anyone going to pick one up while they're in Boston? I would like to, but...

1. I'm not sure if anyone is doing midnight releases for the system (it would be nice to have one Saturday night for the concert)
2. I can't seem to pre-order one from the Gamestops in Boston (a rare occasion when Gamestop WON'T take your money)

What should I do? What are you planning on doing?

Gamestop site says the screens are 93% bigger than the DSi's. So...93% worse battery performance?

The battery life is actually slightly longer.

My guess is, with a larger chassis they can fit a larger battery. Physically larger batteries can hold more of the electrochemical "stuff" that makes a battery work.

If it still doesn't make sense, let me know and I can reply with a wall of text containing knowledge mostly ripped from batteryuniversity.com.

Which Gamestops did you try? I think shooting for a midnight release is a bad plan if you want to actually see the concert ... but picking one up Sunday shouldn't be an issue.

Or you could just get one now from playasia ;)

I think you thought I said it is bigger. But ya, if the resolution isn't a larger size to fit the DSi XL then no point in me picking one up. In fact, I still haven't found enough reasons to pickup a DSi.

I thought you asked if the resolution was higher :) I'm with you on sticking with my DS Lite. They need to make a signficant improvement to convince me to buy a new model.

Ya for real. It was easy to go from the original DS to DS Lite. But I don't care about apps and downloable games on the DS and I have a camera and music player on my phone. :)

I want to see the next DS with a Tegra chip.

No need to go with Gamestop, there are several Best Buys in the city, one of which is quite close to the convention center on Newbury St. I'm sure they will have plenty in stock.

The DSi is about more than downloadable content. There is better hardware, and games that will make use of the new features. However if you already HAVE a DS there's no alarming reason to jump to the DSi...yet.

My neighbor bought her 8 year old daughter a DSi at my urging because she was going to go for a DS Lite. I explained having the cameras handy in it (her daughter is a shutterbug anyways) and the ability to download games will make it a bit better than just a regular old DS Lite. She got it, and her daughter spends hours everyday taking pictures and manipulating them with the built in tools. DSi exclusive games...not so much.

The main reason I would ever get one of these would be as a cheaper alternative to a netbook PC for internet access as well as portable gaming. So is the cheaper price worth the crappy internet browsing that I've heard of, as well as some good portable gaming? Or should I get some sort of netbook instead?

I do own an original DS that I found under the head of my bed after rearranging my room, and after having wondered where it went for the past two years. Haha. I have a small selection of some ok DS and GBA Advance games, and some are crappy. But I'm bringing it to the event anyway, though I need to buy a new charger for it. Any games recommended for my original DS IF (notice the caps) the DSi XL is not recommended for me?

lol...I would not buy a DSi XL as a netbook replacement when Acer sells very capable netbooks for $110 more.

I will never trust anything from Acer again. Both of my computer (a laptop, and their netbook you mentioned) broke within a year of purchase.

That's wierd... I'm forum trolling with a 3+ year-old Acer Travelmate, and my Acer netbook is my constant travelilg companion. The acer laptop even survived a nasty fall on the ice (running to catch bus) with no problem. If you don't like Acer, maybe check out Azus though?

I originally had a giant Acer Aspire E900 laptop, 19". The hinges fucking broke from regular usage, just wore down within a year of me buying it. I had another laptop for a while after that and then the mobo fried so I got the aspire one and had it since...I think the summer. Like May-June. I brought it with me to Atlantic City in January and go to turn it on and it doesn't respond, and I had it charging before I left to make sure it had plenty of battery life + had the charger with me. I'm thinking mobo died again, as its the same situation I had with my previous laptop (wouldn't turn on). Meanwhile my dad has had this HP Presario laptop for like 5 years, leaves it on all night burning, and the damn thing never breaks down.

Back to the subject of the Nintendo DS possibly? What games do you suggest? I always found Poke'mon games to be enjoyable and they pass the time well.

For PAX specifically, you should focus on multiplayer and social games. Mario Kart is pretty much universal. Single-card download play games are pure gold. People are willing to try just about anything. Mostly bring games that YOU want to play and that YOU feel are worthy of sharing with others.

If you don't know many DS games, you don't yet know what's good to play and what isn't, then we'd better give you some game ideas, huh?

I had fun with Mario Kart of course, Mario Party, Brain Age multiplayer (especially that group drawing game), and New Super Mario Bros multiplayer.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just bought a DSi on eBay for $113 used in good condition (so the listing states at least) and Pokemon Platinum separately for $26. So I think I got a good deal. I'll consider buying MArio Kart, I always enjoyed that on the N64. Do they have Super Smash Bros. for DS?

PS, are there DS games that don't work for either DSi or DS Lite? Cuz I just read on one listing for Mario Kart that it works for DS Lite but not DSi. Aren't they supposed to be fully compatible with all DS systems?

I'm not getting a DSi XL. For ten dollars more you could pickup a Wii; the price point is ridiculous.

This is the thread for what games to bring to PAX

    http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showthread.php?t=110518

Anyways, does anyone want to have a PAX DSi XL Launch party?

If there are no midnight releases, then maybe Sunday morning at the nearby Gamestop or Best Buy?
