InDesign upgrade question

This is a touchy subject and I'll understand if it gets locked immediately. I'm not sure if this is against the rules or not.

My wife received a copy of Adobe InDesign CS1 from a friend who bought it. Of course she didn't (and won't) register it. Now my wife needs Adobe CS2. She is going to buy this legally.

The question is, can she legally upgrade her copy of CS1, which she doesn't own, to a legal copy of CS2, or will she have to buy CS2 outright?

The short answer is no, she can't legally upgrade that way.

...then how about the long answer? It's a $500 difference.
