I recently got a Blackberry 9700. At work today I heard a voice, so pulled it out of my pocket, and it was on the phone to 911 with a lady shouting to get my attention. So I hung up, expected her to call back but she didn't (when I was a young child I dialed 911 and hung up and they called back and spent like a half hour on the phone trying to get me to convince them I wasn't being kidnapped.) I called Rogers to ask if theres a way to turn the Emergency button off on my phone so it doesn't happen again, they said no, which is fine, but then went on to say something which seems ridiculous to me.
Apparently, the Emergency button on my lock screen only works when there is no signal of any kind (No 3G, no Edge, no phone signal) which doesn't make sense to me. How does this work?
Also, he told me to wear that ridiculous giant belt clip because apparently that puts the phone into sleep mode and won't call anyone. Any other options anyone knows of?
Also, am I likely to get a giant fine for misusing the 911 line or something on my next bill?
Rather than using the keyboard lock to secure your phone while in your pocket/purse, you should use the standby mode. Press and hold the mute key (top of the BB) for 2 seconds to activate. Tap the mute key to deactivate.
So use standby instead of keyboard lock.
Or, make a password for it and make sure that password doesn't have the string "008" in it. Even "0408" or "0058" would be bad.
I can tell you that the government can't impose a criminal fine against you through your phone bill.
Generally, the crime of misusing emergency services requires that the government prove some sort of intent on your part. But whatever the elements are, they'd have to prove all of them in court.
In the future, you should tell the 911 operator you called on accident instead of just hanging up.
Yeah, I realized this after - but it was one of those "oh shit" moments and then like 2 seconds later thought it through, but obviously didn't wanna call 911 to say "sorry my bad"

In the age of BBs and iPhones, they're used to it. You won't get in trouble if you just tell them you butt-dialed 911.

Yup, been through this twice. Then I found the Mute button puts teh BB onto standby, which is happiness.
Basically, standby is what happens when you put the BB in the giant stupid holster - all of the buttons (except the mute button) do nothing, and the screen goes blank. Saves power, too. Calls will still be recieved and whatnot.
Effectively, you get three levels of functionality - On->Locked->Standby. It's a bit annoying to have to click the mute button every time you want to use the phone, but it beats dialing 911 by accident.
mute button to standby, or get a holster... these don't have to be belt clips. blackberry makes nice leather "pockets/pouches" that have the built in magnet to put your phone into 'holster mode'
Standby works. Between the toddler and my pocket dialing, the police had been accidentally called enough times that they called me back and informed me that if I didn't do something they'd stop responding to my calls (I'm not sure they can do that).
I'm pretty sure they could cite me for wasting police resources, or somesuch offense.
Djeet, the standard test to see if a phone line works is to call 911. They're used to non-emergency calls all the time. The only time they're going to press charges like that is when some dumb grandmother calls in for the 11th time that day to complain about people having fun in the park or some such nonsense.

Accidental 911 calls happen all the time. It's not a huge deal.

Read your manual?
Standby won't do anything until you hit the mute key to bring it out of standby.
