Monitor/TV help

So, I'm moving. My girlfriend and I are moving in together (and to New York City) and the combination of two peoples' stuff and a much smaller apartment (due to NYC's high cost of living) means that I'm going to have to make some tough choices. Specifically, there isn't really enough room for both my (large) television and my (large by virtue of vintage rather than quality) computer monitor.

I was thinking, therefore, of getting one display that could serve both purposes. I'd like the display to be fairly big -- I currently have a 47 inch TV and don't relish the idea of going back to watching movies on a 20 inch monitor. I've also heard that although you can simply pipe your computer signal into a modern television, you're going to take a massive resolution hit. I'd also rather avoid projectors, simply because I'm not sure that there's a convenient wall upon which to project/hang a screen.

Does anyone have any ideas as to a good product/brand/solution for me?

Thanks for the help.

Tl;dr --> I need a display solution that can function as both a tv and computer monitor. I'd like it to be fairly large and not overly limiting in terms of resolution, and projectors could be tricky given the shape of the room.

Almost any HDTV with a VGA port is going function fine as a computer monitor, and VGA ports (labeled "PC input") are a standard feature. There are now 1080p televisions out there so you won't have to take a resolution hit. The only question is how much you are willing to pay. This television can meets all of your needs but it costs $3,500.

Sell the old 47" TV now, move, and once you've got the place arranged start measuring to see how much TV you can fit in. Then buy a new HDTV. Keep in mind, however, that it's a pain in the ass to try and read small text on a screen that's across the room, so think about getting a smaller LCD monitor and a VESA arm mount that lets you swing it out of the way when you aren't using it.
