Monsterpocalypse
What is it?
According to the offical website:
This is Monsterpocalypse, a fast-moving, action-packed strategy game played with high-quality collectible miniatures portraying the most fearsome giant monsters on Earth! Each battle takes place in a city that you and your opponent construct by placing buildings on a city map. Players choose their forces from their respective collections of figures and then battle one another with giant monsters and supporting units such as tanks, flying vehicles, and all manner of creatures. Charge your monster into the city to fight for supremacy, and be the last monster standing!
When the battle begins, you command your monster and lead your units into the city to hunt down and destroy your opponent's monster. To accomplish your mission, your monster and units each have weapons and abilities that are activated by special dice.
Monsters can increase their power throughout the game by smashing buildings and destroying enemy units. When two monsters fight each other, the results are devastating-they can throw each other across the city, slam into buildings, and suplex each other into radioactive rubble! The last monster standing wins the game!
In short, it's a game where giant monsters and their minions beat the crap out of each other and destroy a city in the process. It's (mostly) a collectible miniatures games (ala Heroclix) with random distribution, but there are alternatives (both official and unofficial) to get the figures you want.
What do I get to play as?
Monsterpocalypse forces are divided into
Agendas and
Factions. An
Agenda consists of a group of factions that are allied together and can be used together without penalty. Certain figures grant bonuses to in-agenda or in-faction figures.
It should be noted that there are essentially two blocks of factions. The
Rise block includes GUARD, Terrasaurs, Martians, Planet Eaters, Cthuul, and Shadow Sun Syndicate. You can find these figures in the
Rise,
I Chomp NY, and
All Your Base series of releases. It should be noted that this block of releases get the bonus of faction buildings. Each faction from this block also has the option to use a
Morpher monster, which consists of four special units in its alpha form, and the combined monster in its ultra form.
The second block consists of Elementals, Apes, Subterrans, Swarm, Tritons, and UCI. You can find them in the
Now and
Big in Japan series. There will be another series for this block, but there's no ETA yet. It should be noted that this block of releases gets the bonus of special character units. Presumably, they'll gain access to morpher monsters in their next series.
Descriptions/examples of the various factions:
PROTECTORS
These are the (mostly) good guys. They tend to get bonuses for protecting the buildings under their control.
G.U.A.R.D.
The giant robots and armored tanks of Globally United Advanced Research and Defense fight for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
GUARD monsters are actually piloted giant robots with a Mazinger-like aesthetic. Their units are composed of tanks, helicopters, and other semi-futuristic vehicles.
Elemental Champions
These towering demigods wield the power of earth, air, fire, and water to defend humanity from monstrous threats.
Elemental Champion monsters are huge avatars of the Earth's elements. Their units are smaller versions.
RADICALS
Radicals are pursuing an anti-industrial agenda, only with dinosaurs and giant apes rather than hippies. They tend to get bonuses for destroying industrial buildings.
Terrasaurs
The Terrasaurs, earth-shaking, gargantuan dinosaurs, prefer a simpler time before technology and progress changed so much of the world.
Terrasaurs are the "Godzilla" faction. Their monsters are giant dinosaurs, while their units are smaller versions.
Empire of the Apes
With gargantuan apes from the remotest jungles of Africa, this simian empire is poised to knock mankind back into the Stone Age.
The Apes are the "King Kong" faction. Their monsters are various flavors of giant apes, while their units are smaller apes with a militaristic bent (ie. rocket launchers)
Fiends
Fiends and pure evil. They want to enslave and dominate the human race.
Lords of Cthuul
Dark beings from another plane come to enslave the human race.
The "Cthulhu" faction. Abominations everywhere.
Subterran Uprising
The underground brutes known as the Subterrans fight to enslave humanity and blot out the sun.
The Molemen faction. Their monsters and units are mostly mole/machine hybrids, with lots of drills and clamps and stuff.
Invaders
Invaders wish to take over the planet and steal our resources. They tend to be good at debuffing the enemy.
Martian Menace
These diabolical visitors from space have come to harvest Earth’s inhabitants and resources for their own insidious plans.
The Martians mix War of the Worlds type Martians with Mars Attacks type Martians, with a dash of ID4. They have a lot of saucers and walkers, with lots of glowing green bits.
Tritons
These tidal terrors seek to invade coastlines around the planet by raising water levels and sinking cities
Tritons have giant sea creatures as their monsters. Their units are sea creatures or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea retro subs.
Destroyers
Destroyers are mindless killing machines.
Planet Eaters
These ravenous creatures from a far away world want nothing more than to wreck our planet.
The Planet Eaters seem to be based off of some of Godzilla's intergalactic foes, like Gigan. Their monsters and units are weird alien creatures. They also have one of the coolest named units ever, the Explodohawk.
Savage Swarm
Like a plague of locusts sweeping across the land, the giant insectoids of the Swarm leave nothing but dust in their wake.
Giant bugs!
Collaborators
Collaborators follow a shadowy agenda.
Shadow Sun Syndicate
Mystery surrounds the motivations of these stealthy scientifically engineered ninjas.
The Ultraman/weeaboo faction. Their monsters and some of their units are cybernetically enhanced ninja man-bots. They also use futuristic vehicles.
Ubercorp International
The massive UberCorp International has its own interests at heart, a fact that sometimes helps Earth’s cities and sometimes reduces them to rubble.
UCI uses robotic versions of the other factions' monsters and units.
More about monsters.
Your monster is the centerpiece of your force. Each monster can grant special traits or abilities to the units under its command. Each also has its own special traits or abilities. In addition, each monster has two forms, an alpha and an ultra form.
Armodax (in his alpha form) versus Cthuugrosh (in his ultra form).
Each form of the monster has different abilities and traits. You can switch between the two by spending power dice, or you'll automatically revert to the other form if one is destroyed. You win once your opponent's monster is completely destroyed.
Some monsters have other forms that can also be used instead of an ultra form, such as mega or quantum forms. You can get these forms by winning organaized play tournaments or through certain special promotions.
What about Voltron?
One of the biggest MonPoc announcements was the release of a starter set based on Voltron. It includes everything you need for two players to play the game, including monsters and units for each side.
The Voltron set includes a map with static objects to interact with, rather than the buildings you use for a normal map. Voltron/Lo-Tron are compatible with the normal MonPoc game, with Voltron part of the
Protectors agenda, while Lo-Tron is part of the
Fiends agenda.
How about the map
One of the coolest aspects of MonPoc is how the board looks. Each map has a number of spots where buildings can be placed.
If you control a building (have three units adjacent to it), you gain special bonuses. You also generate power dice, which allow your monster to change their form or do special power attacks. You can deal extra damage if you slam or throw enemy monsters into buildings, which creates rubble or hazards. As of right now, there are approximately 40 different buildings that can be used.
What do I need to get started?
You have a few options.
1. Purchase a starter. You can get one at your FLGS or through various online retailers. It'll include a random monster, 4 pre-determined units, two pre-determined buildings, and the various bits you need to play (dice, health tracker, map, rulebook). From there, you'll want to fill out your force with boosters or by buying singles from online stores.
2. You can buy the force you want by getting singles at online stores. If you go this route, you can print the rulebook from the official website. You'll want to buy one of the
accessory packs, so you get the dice, health tracker, and as an added bonus, you get red or blue markers to attach to your figures to easily identify them as yours.
3. You can buy one of the 2 player starter packs. The Voltron pack is currently available. A 2 player starter pack will be released on October 20th for the regular Monsterpocalypse game. It will include one monster for each player, 13 units for each player, along with six buildings, the map, the rules, and the other bits you need. The two factions included in each box are randomly chosen from the Rise block.
How much will this cost me?
Starters end up being about $25 each (2 player starters are about $50 each) at retail price. Boosters (monster or unit) are about $15. You can find them online at significantly cheaper prices.
If you buy singles, monsters will run you about $5-10 for an alpha/ultra pair. Units go for $0.50 to $5.00, depending on what it is. Buildings can run between about $2 and $15, again depending on what it is. You can usually find some pretty good deals on ebay when people sell off their force.
Can it be played online?
Yes, you can play it via VASSAL, an online tabletop simulator. More info can be found
here.What about the movie?
In another huge announcement, there's going to be a MonPoc movie directed by some guy named Tim Burton. Perhaps you've heard of him?
What's coming in the future?
Aside from the movie, we should be seeing the release of the sixth series (the third series for the Now block) sometime in the relatively near future. There's some hubbub about the lack of news on its release date, but this is presumably because of the insane blitz of Warmachine/Hordes products by Privateer Press this year (Mark II versions of the core rule books, a book for each faction, various models for the main factions along with two new Minion sub-factions). Presumably we'll have information by December, when the last faction book comes out for Hordes.
There's been some hints about the next block of monsters, including dragons, undead, and giant women.

There's a two-player starter box that's being released on October 20th, so I'm hoping to drum up some interest in this awesome game.
First I've heard of this, but who doesn't love giant monsters fighting it out.
If enough people are interested, I'd love to get a league going.
Never bought much for it myself, I've got the two original Human Super Robots and some support vehicles for them. Never did get around to repainting the one to look more like Mazinger...
I'm in a bit of a similar boat in my area. I started playing at my FLGS just as a lot of people jumped from MonPoc to Arcane Legions. AL never really took off, and the delay for Big in Japan scared most of the regulars away. I did manage to convince four of my buddies to get into the game, so we get some games in amongst ourselves and occasionally head to the FLGS for tournaments where we get the one other dedicated MonPoc player to play also.
Here's a pic of what the game looks like over VASSAL.
So we were all secretly getting a little nervous after so long after BiJ and having no new information.
Good news!

Isn't it always?
Matev, I'd be happy to run a demo game over vassal if you want to give it a shot.
It definitely is, salty. Let me know if you want a demo game sometime.
the martians look fantastic
Rocket-Punch > Everything
I have a plan!
People interested in playing, post with the following information:
What days would you usually be able to play?:
What factions do you play/are you interested in?:
Have you played the game before?:
From there, we can figure out times/days to meet on vassal and get our MonPoc on. I got in a game at the FLGS tonight and I'm itching for more.
I'll keep this information in the 2nd post.
2. G.U.A.R.D looks the coolest (obviously GG agrees ) . Empire of the Apes follows closely, and Planet Eaters look cool also.
3. Nope
What factions do you play/are you interested in?: Martians look neat
Have you played the game before?: No
Like any proper super robot pilot, he's just letting dramatic tension build up before unleashing his super move. 8-)
-I got a monster pack back near the beginning and got Cthul, so by my own bylaws of Chaos and Luck, that's what I'll play. Also intrigued by UberCorp as Mecha Godzilla was always more badass in my opinion.
-Nope, never played
Matev, I might be able to do Tuesday. I should know by Sunday night.
Lemme know if I have to do any prep, I'll try to get vassal up this weekend.

I'd also take a look at what monster you want to play. Scope out the choices on the wiki and let me know, this way I can brush up on what they do.

Would it be possible do to this more 10ish est?
9 is doable. But I would have more time to look over the rules in detail with 10. Unless you don't mind.
(Apologies for the late response)
