The courtier sneered as he looked at the crowd. "Right, you lot! Seems there's been a problem out in Stonebrook. The King's not about to send a patrol out there, not while we're still negotiating with the dwarves. He's decided to commission some of you to investigate it. A waste of time, in my opinion... but a harmless one, since we won't have to pay you when you can't deliver. Applications on my desk by the morning, full charters only. That's five auxiliaries, or don't bother. Standard commission, you know the drill."
The Auxiliaries is a 1st level campaign for five players. You've signed up as auxiliaries in the King's Guard. You're basically sheriff's deputies, and the expectation is that if you do well you'll be offered positions in the Guard itself. The competition to become auxiliaries is fierce, and there's a crowd of hopefuls any time a new contract is announced. You may have met the other members of your party in that crowd or you may have known them for some time. You guys tell me. Your initial assignment is to answer a call for aid that an outlying village sent to the King. The adventure starts when you leave the city.
Ye Olde Worlde!
You begin in Tanis, the capital city of Hayven. A port city, Tanis borders the circle sea, providing easy travel to the elven lands to the south. Recent advances in magic have made food and healing abundant, resulting in a population explosion in the capital. People aren't starving, thanks to the generosity of the crown, but they're not living well, either. Hence the competition for jobs of any sort. The kingdom of Hayven stretches far to the east and west of Tanis, and civilization deteriorates as distance from the capital increases. It's populated primarily by humans, but there is much trade and travel between Hayven and the lands of other races.
The Races:
Humans:
Humans primarily live in Hayven, and are more populous than the other races. King Erik maintains order as best he can with strength of magic and the royal army, but in conquering all the land between the Teswa Waste and the Forest of the Fey, his ancestors bit off a little more than they could chew. The outer reaches of Hayven are occupied by frontier towns, each with its own castle and ruling lord. Bandits and monstrous races eke out a living in isolated areas between towns, and travel between towns requires military escort.
Dwarves, Gnomes, and Halflings:
I'm trying something different with some of the non-human races in this game. It's hard for me to keep track of all the races in 4e in a flavor and setting sense, so I'm combining some of them. Dwarves, Gnomes, and Halflings are all members of the same race, and referred to as dwarves. Traditional dwarves, hardy and serious, live in the northeastern mountains of Urden. The playful Halflings and magic-loving gnomes live in the Forest of the Fey, bordering the western edge of Hayven. This is not a mechanical change of any sort. Mountain dwarves still get dwarven weapon training and second wind as a minor, and mystic dwarves still fade away when attacked and have feats that help illusion powers. But your characters won't hear an innkeeper say "Oh, a halfling! I've never seen one of your kind before! We do get dwarves in from Urden, of course." Basically halflings, gnomes, and dwarves are one race with three cultures.
Goliaths: Largely as in the PHB2, nomadic and competitive. Come from the northwestern Rocktooth mountain range. Like the mountain dwarves, superior fighters in rocky terrain. Tend to keep to themselves, and not very interested in trade or politics.
Dragonborn:
Pretty much as in the PHB. Honorable, proud warriors. Live in Eltana, north of Urden and the Rocktooth mountains, which are in turn north of Hayven. With the minotaur, oversee a large, technologically advanced utopia of sorts. Eltana is largely peaceful, perhaps because they don't suffer 'lesser' races to live there, and native miscreants are dealt with harshly.
Minotaurs:
As in Dragon 369, except they've largely dealt with their dark past. The evil Nashara empire was cast down by the forces of Eltana centuries ago, and beautiful cities raised over its ruins. Minotaurs still battle dark impulses, but those who succumb are quickly caught and killed.
Deva, Wilden, Revenants: As detailed in their respective sourcebooks. Relatively rare, these races have no lands or homes of their own. They are scattered throughout the world, and command respect as instruments of divine will.
Warforged, Kalashtar: as written for now, I may work a little more with the races in the next week.
Shifters: As in the PHB2. Mostly live in small communities in the wild Forest of the Fey. Can be found in the Oderfund as well.
Elves, Drow, and Eladrin:
As with Dwarves, all members of one race, and referred to as elves. The southern land of Asheron is occupied by the city elves and tieflings in Raestlan to the west, and the forest elves and cave elves in Oderfund to the east. The cave elves and the tieflings occupy the massive underground caverns of the region. The denizens of Oderfund (elves and drow) lead a relatively simple existence, preferring to live close to nature. Though they have no grand cities, they enjoy rich tradition and religion going back thousands of years. The city elves have built large cities, but they are ugly and functional, not striking and opulent like the cities of Eltana. They have made a study of magic, and are rumored to be able to travel to other planes.
The cave dwellers are not dark and evil, and are not hated by the other cultures of elvenkind.
Half-elves: As in the PHB.
Tieflings:
The tieflings have built their own cities in the caverns of Raestlan, beneath those of the city elves. Secretive and xenophobic, nobody knows much about them but the city elves, and they're not telling. Ancient warfare between cave elves and tieflings resulted in the blocking of most underground passages from one land to the other.
Gnolls and Half-Orcs:
Barbaric beasts from the Teswa Waste, these creatures are not trusted by your average farmer. Civilized members of these races are not troubled by educated people with an open mind, and may be able to live even in country towns if they put up with the abuse long enough to win over the inhabitants.
For now I'm intending to use the standard Points of Light pantheon.
This game will be Play by Post, and you need to be able to post at least once per day. If your activity drops you will make me sad. I'm located in Colorado, in the Mountain Time Zone, GMT - 7:00. I work about 9AM-6PM, and I won't be posting from work. I do sometimes come home for lunch, and I have time to post in the morning, but most of my activity will be from about 6 PM to 11 PM on weeknights. Weekends I'm available most of the time. I've never DMed a serious campaign before, so there may be mistakes and omissions as I get situated. Please forgive them. Mechanically I will be following the rules pretty firmly. If something creates a silly situation, I'll overrule it, but I'll talk with you guys about it first. I don't know how long this campaign will last. I have some ideas that would probably not show up until Epic Tier, but I don't want to commit to much beyond a single adventure, say 2-3 levels worth of play. At that point we'll see how things are going and if you guys want to continue.
I have no roles in mind, so you could end up with four avengers and a cleric if that's how the apps turn out. Originally I had intended this to be for new players only, but I sort of fell in love with the setting as I worked it out, and I'm worried new players won't stick with it. So for now, open to all. I'll probably be deciding based on class and background only, but no guarantees.
I have DDI, so no race or class exclusions at this time. Hybrids are perfectly fine. I'm not too fond of psions, but if you want to play one I'll try to work them in. Talk to me about anything you want to homebrew before you spend too much time on it. I'm often in the IRC channel if you have questions, or shoot me an email, PM, or IM.
I'm no longer going on a trip next weekend, but I'll still stick with a tentative submission deadline of midnight November 8.
You'll get a free Expertise Feat at level 5, and it's okay to take one now and retrain it when you get the free one.
Is there a special way I should go about applying?
Really all you need is a character concept. CB Summary/Orokos/Mythweavers sheet optional. Photo optional. When the campaign starts I'll ask for sheets on Orokos and rolls on Orokos or Invisible Castle.
Character backgrounds - I take it just general backgrounds only?
Yeah, recent years have been too peaceful for Scales of War to make much sense, and FR and Eberron is setting-specific. General only unless you talk to me about a specific background.
Edit: The party:
Tern Blackbriar, adorable mascot and puissant druid rolled into one.
Kaazin, the rogue so badass it took an encounter with death to teach him caution.
Erris Iratian, a paladin from another world who's willing to help save this one. Or burn it to ashes around her. Tune in next week to see if she can control her temper!
Amaryllis, a dreamy (get it?) cleric who struggles with the military aspect of the military.
Last but certainly not least, Nall, deadonthestreet's Drow Assassin. Hey, somebody in the party has to be sane.

Which striker is out? The assassin? Also, how do you feel about PHB3 classes?
I won't be able to submit a sheet until tomorrow evening, but concepts I'll put down for now:
Panlan Greymane, a fairly wise Gnoll Druid seeking to make a name for himself in civilization.
Cruhorn Fireseal, ex-criminal Human Sorcerer.
We lost our rogue and our druid. We have only had one major combat so far (so still lvl. 1) and we are in Stonebrook. I don't know how Powerpuppies feels about the new classes, but I know wilden are mentioned in the post, so I'm guessing at least some PHBIII stuff is ok.
"Cemetery? Yes. Amazing how few interruptions I get since I changed it."
Appearance:
Background:
She has suspicions her mother was of otherworldly blood, but has no proof; her suspicions, however, are usually correct. Given her surprising amount of wilderness knowledge, one might think she traveled extensively in her youth; in truth, all she knows comes from books, and she's never been further than Stonebrook in her life. Her early training under the talkative Golmen Harris, Esq., was unsatisfactory to both parties, and she hasn't spoken to him in over a decade.
Cemetery likes her life quiet and uncomplicated. Alas, her efforts to keep it that way will soon prove futile.
Background.
And so, at the age of 15, well armed with letters and books, and knowledge of many things anceint and not applicable, she set off to travel the world. Very quickly she realized that she was ill-prepared to deal with what the world had to offer. But as many a half-elf before her, she adapted, traveling from town to town. And all the while trying to learn as much as she could, for her desire for knowledge had become a bright flame. She wasn't sure what she wanted to know, just that she needed to know it.
And she continued travelling, for years, finally making her way to the heart of Hayven. And here she found a book. Small, non-descript, titled "Souls, a treatise by Annomandaris." Instantly she knew, felt with all her being, this was the first step in path she had been looking for. With each page, she felt a little closer to the knowledge she needed. And with each page, she found herself preparing the rituals outlined within. Rituals of santification, of summoning, and at the pinnacle, the ritual of binding.
Suddenly she woke, as if from a trance, her body covered in tattoo's, her room covered in spells of protection, and directly in front of her, a summoning circle. In that circle was a fey, pushing hard to try and break the circle, all the while whispering terrible promises to Tavore. And so she had no choice. It was bind her soul to the fey, and hold it to her, or be taken by the fey, held as a slave for the rest of her life.
Leaving her room for the first time in a week, Tavore's stomach grumbled, reminding her she hadn't eaten that whole time. And the realization dawned on her that she hadn't been to work either, or payed her rent... What does that sign say? "Accepting applications King's Guard Auxilliaries." Well, its money, assumably.
Appearance:
Mannerisms:
When idle, she tends to trace the blank spots on her skin, them-selves negative space runes and sigil's.

Marazzo Digrassi, Human hybrid
Background
In his travels he encountered and felled many beasts near the Teswa Wastes and dulests from every corner of the world particularly Oderfund, using all means of blades, bludgeons and flails. He soon learned that his highborn slightly ceremonial fighting style would not suffice in such an arena having several close calls and learning that the field of honor held different rules in different regions some of which seemed not to honorable at all, backstabbing double-teaming and such. He instinctively began to warp his clean style of elitist swordsmanship into more of a barbaric primal style, feeding of off both instinct and emotion as well as technique and practice, a style well suited for battling multiple foes at once while moving deftly across the field.
He has since become a bit of a sword collector keeping the fine blades of his rivals as both tropies and a means to broaden his skills. He heard from Quelenna prior to thier parting of a swordsman of legendary skill living somewhere deep in the Teswa Wastes, a man with whom she had once been much more than friends. This man, or rather changeling, went by the name Lucius and is apparently a most difficult mark for upstart swordsmen, as not only is his location relatively unknown, but he also disguises himself with his innate abilities, and uses trickery to test his would be challengers before their blades should ever cross. Such a legendary man has proven himself to be a most irresistible target for young Marazzo, and as soon as he has the funds to undertake the journey he has vowed to himself to test his steel against that of a true master.
Having lost his ties to his fortune, but still harboring high tastes, as well as the dream of an excursion into the heart of the Teswa Wastes, Marazzo Digrassi sought out a living as a swordplay instructor and sell-sword. Having built up quite a lofty reputation on both the frontiers near the Teswa Wastes and the areas near Oderfund, he had little trouble finding work, which led him to Stonebrook after recieving an urgent request to reinforce the auxiliaries already there. With high hopes that this may lead to more chances to test his steel and perhaps gain an instructors position in the kings court. this one Marazzo couldn't pass up!
Appearance and Mannerisms
Often considered a dandy at a first impression Marazzo speaks in the way common amoungst the nobility of Hayvern. He also enjoys dressing well when in the proper company which only furthers his negative rap. he often wears a wide brimmed hat adorned with a large fluffy feather, and wears hide armor trimmed with fine furs. A bit of a blade collector at his hips Digrassi wears not only a finely crafted longsword, with an intricate basket guard (a relic of his wealthy past), a deeply engraved elven scimitar( won in a duel against a particularly skilled cave elf) and a tribal kopesh adorned with feathers, leathers and beads, which despite its primal crafting is perfectly balanced ( taken from a shifter chieftain whose technique couldn't match his fine blade)

Background:
Though the pulsating orange streaks on her jet-black fur has a distracting effect on passersby, Magllea is usually on her best behavior in public situations. She can often be seen chewing (well, more like gnashing) on peppermint candies, a peculiarity she developed as a memory aid when studying spells in her spellbook.

I'm currently in no PbPs on here, but I am DMing one IRL. I can post everyday, including weekends.
Background:
As Mara grew up, she became remarkably gifted in the way of the sword and was a devout follower of Ioun. She also became known through the temple for her keen eyes and her daring feats of physical prowess. She kept wondering why it was that she was brought to the temple, but never really got any answers. That changed on her eighteenth birthday. That was the day she learned the truth.
An old and nearly forgotten prophecy foretold of someone being born under a silver moon. That person would chosen by Ioun to become a hand of vengeance for the gods that would smite the wicked and to tip the scales of justice in favor of the meek. She was sent out into the world that day, to find her own path and to fulfill the prophecy.
While the prophecy is an enticing possibility to Mara and she is a devout worshipper, she does not place much stock in it. Many must have been born under the silver moon, and she knows she was not the only child of that day raised to fulfill that prophecy...
Her clothes are in tatters due to the fact that she has been running short on cash for quite some time. The cloak she wears would best be described as a shredded piece of cloth fastened by a fastener given to her from the temple of her upbringing.
I played in one 4e PbP, but that one died during its first encounter; I do not have much experience playing. Can post whenever necessary.
I was going to submit an avenger, because they are so awesome. I don't want to compete with anyone else who picks such an awesome class, so I will be submitting an Druid once i can work out the background details.

Background:
The colony lived peacefully there for quite some time. They could easily live off of the land, so they have to do too much trading. After years of seclusion, the dwarves lost their interest in dealing with other groups entirely. They no longer took treks up to the mountains to visit their brethren, and any passerbys through the colony were ignored or chased away. The dwarves were happy enough basking in the beauty and wonder of the nature.
Orsik, like many of the other young dwarves, spent his days learning the druidic ways. His father was one of the strongest druids of the colony, so Orsik was lucky to have the best teacher and a strong bloodline. He quickly surpassed his peers and became the first of his age to attempt the initiation trial and become a fully recognized druid.
The initiation trial involved traveling alone, deep into the forest, 2 day's travel from the colony, and communicating with the wise great bear. Many of the colony's druids have communicated with the great bear, blessed with longetivity, and being able to obtain his blessing demonstrated that a young dwarf was ready for druidhood.
For Orsik, the two day travel was easy. Speaking with the great bear and granting his blessing wasn't difficult either. Orsik was pleased at how well his initiation trial was going, and how quickly he was able to go through them.
When he finally returned the camp, Orsik's smile vanished from his face. Everyone in the camp was gone.
Orsik searched the entire colony for fellow dwarves. The entire place was abandoned, and the houses were all ransacked. It looked to Orsik as if there was a struggle here of some sort, but maybe they had just all left in a hurry. Tracks seemed to lead in every direction. Orsik feared the worst and went out in search of his fellow dwarves.
Note: I will add how he got to stonebrook pretty soon, it is pretty far from the mountains so i need to figure out how to get him there that is not some contrived rube goldberg plot device. Coming Soon.

That part aside,
Gardryn Rockvale, Dwarven Infernal Hammer Warlock
Background
On a recent journey to haven, off to sell some of the rare gems from dwarven mines, and perhaps purchase a few tapestries for his own shop, Gardryn's cart was besieged by goblins. Gardryn drew his hammer and attacked, but there were too many of them and the goblins soon were able to surround him. Gardryn was certain that his end was near. He closed his eyes, and then all of a sudden felt a strong power within him. Dark tendrils shot out from his body, and pierced the chest of a few of the goblins, (*arms of hadaar power). The rest of the goblins were in shock. Gardryn followed up with a hammer to the skull of a surprised goblin. The remaining goblins fled in terror.
Gardryn continued his journey to Hayven, but it was not a peaceful trip anymore. He started to hear dark voices within his mind. Gardryn had no idea where the tendrils came from, but he was certain that it was connected to these voices. They sounded like the devil himself. Gardryn knew that Moradin would not be pleased. However, if it were not for these powers, Gardryn would certainly be dead. Maybe he could save others with them as well. The inner voices certainly weren't going away, maybe they chose him for a reason.
As Gardryn approached Hayven, the demonic voices inside of him grew too loud to concentrate on the real world. He was able to see the town guard say things to him, but could not hear what was said. Gardryn lost all orientation, vomited, and passed out.
When he awoke he was in an infirmary inside of Hayven. His business partner was there, and after a brief discussion, Gardryn was informed that he was no longer trusted with taking part of the business deals. Gardryn still had a wagon though, and he could travel to Stonebrook to try and sell its wares, and maybe word of his strange voices wouldnt have traveled so far.
Gardryn heads towards Stonebrook. He would like to find a reason for these voices, maybe even use it to help people. He knows that his merchant days are limited if he keeps freaking out his business partners.

Kargaros Vale - Human Brawler Fighter
Background
Unlike the other captives he came to realise that he had not lost his free will, he harboured dreams of freedom, strange flashes of a land where his kind were not treated this way, and of a beautiful woman who had eyes like sapphires and a laugh so sweet it would warm the coldest of hearts.
After proving himself worthy of being a bodyguard to his dark master he planned his escape, hiding on a trade cart which was headed close to the borders of the wastes. From there he travelled the lands of Hayven, a strong sword arm was always of use (and he made good use of it), he has come to love life and embrace each day as if it could be his last. He tirelessly searches for the woman in his visions, not content until he can find out who she is and why he sees her in his dreams.
He cannot stand to see any form of slavery, and has little respect for those that would abuse the weaknesses of others. He has recently heard that the people of Stonebrook are under attack by unknown creatures and plans to investigate.
Looks and personality
His face and body are covered in a patchwork of scars although he still manages to be strangely attractive. He has a throaty laugh that has made many a fair maiden blush. When angered, just one look from him is enough to make any but the bravest quake in their boots.
