Some of you may know that I do stand up but if not . . . I do. I've been doing it for a little over a year now and the below video is the accumulation of my jokes from the past year. I never knew what I was getting into when I first started and was instantly in love with the art of getting on stage in front of random people and making them laugh. There is no better high.
My first 30 times or so on stage I bombed . . . BAD. I still bomb . . bad. However I don't hate bombing, bombing has helped me hone my skills to what jokes work for me.
The below 7 mins video took me a year to make . . . I have never spent that amount of time on anything. I even quite world of warcraft before a year.

I've never been a big fan of the machine gun joke-telling style of comedy, it's not something I passionately hate or anything, i just prefer an act to have a story. Joke after joke just feels like your constantly shifting gear and doesn't maintain any kind of momentum.
Your jokes are good but I'd drop the kids in bed though, your going to get way more boo's, uncomfortable silences and calls to the cops than laughs.
All in all though, it's a pretty good act, it's certainly better than a lot of professional comics I've seen.
Posted in the youtube page, but, my comment is just that the jokes are really, really good, but the presentation is quite ehhhhhh
I have no personal experience in developing this, so my guess is that watching other comedians with distinct styles would help you try and find one that suits your kind of jokes best.

Less "uhs" and work on your timing. Demitri Martin is a good guy to watch for timing. I dont recommend that you outright copy him, but it will help you to realize how important silence can be to a joke.
I think you're hilarious
I love your style, reminds me of Zach Galifinakis, Hedburg et al.
definitely some longer pauses would be good, the children in bed joke is hilarious but uh yeah some people aren't down, clearly.
This style you have is really great for these informal smaller-place gigs, I'd love to see some more.

I think you're hilarious
I love your style, reminds me of Zach Galifinakis, Hedburg et al.
Mitch Hedberg is who immediately came to mind for me. There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of budding/would be/up-in-coming stand ups who take after Hedberg. He's certainly not the first stand up to see success with that particular kind of delivery or style, nor was he the last. But since him in particular there have been a lot of aspiring comics who have taken after him. And THAT, is not such a good thing.
Rapid joke delivery aside, I still find him way less reminiscent of Galifinakis in terms of quality and refinery, and way more reminiscent of Hedberg in terms of structure, subject, and quality. Not on par with Mitch! Just closer in terms of those particular qualities.
Granted I have always liked Zach's material, and delivery over Hedberg's any day of the week. That's not to say that I don't find Mitch's work unfunny. I just don't enjoy it, or respect it quite as much in comparison. But that's not to rag on Hedberg, or even Romanian's set in any way.
I did chuckle. I did laugh. I did enjoy the set. You've definitely got some funny shit going on, and I would like to hear more. But if you plan on making a career out of it, you've got a long road ahead of you. Even some of the best stand-ups in stand-up history spend years and years struggling to gain any sort of acknowledgment. And anything close to fame takes a backseat even to that.
Now by the Comedy Store, I can only assume you mean the one in LA? LA is huge these days when it comes to stand-up. Comedy in general actually. Its the best place to be right now if you're either in, or looking to break into that business.
Have you spoken with only in the field directly, or made any attempts to get in contact with them? There's tons in the area who know their shit and quite a few who are willing to help up-in-comers. I highly suggest getting in contact with them. There are proper channels, but they do tend to be pretty laid back in general if you aren't a dick, or a pain in the ass about it.
You got some good jokes man, also congrats on doing stand up for a year, takes some guts. I've got 2 suggestions though, comedy's not my day job so take them as you want.
1. Even though you're doing the rapid fire jokes (which is fine) perhaps you could order them a little better. Like in your set you had 2 different jokes about being drunk, but they were like 3 minutes apart. If you talked a bit about being drunk and had those 2 jokes back to back I could see it working better. Then, if you could maybe transition a bit into the next joke / topic that could work really well.
2. Throughout the video you seemed to be either leaning on the mic stand or the stool, it looked like you were going to fall down if it weren't for something to lean on. Now if this is a medical condition, then I'm incredibly sorry for saying that as a negative. But otherwise I'd say try to support yourself a bit more. It makes you look like you're tired or something.
Thanks for all the feedback/ suggestions guys. At the very begging i was watching lots of hedberg, martin, wright, galifiankis, etc. videos and noticed myself trying to "sound" like them involuntarily. 5 months ago I stopped listening to any of their material and working on evolving my own style. I feel most comfortable saying uhm and think I'll need to just slowly get over it instead of trying to force myself to stop.
I do know that comedy is a long term endevour and this year my only goal is to become a regular at a comedy club or two where I don't need to bring people in order to get stage time.
You sound very knowledgeable about the industry Buck, are you LA? And yup I am down here .
As for more material I have about 7 more minutes of material but it needs to be worked on and over 3 hours worth of premises/material that needs to be WAYYYY worked on. Stuff that never got laughs.
I actually laughed out loud at that joke. But everything else was pretty funny, too.
I think your act could be better if you just put everything together into a coherent story or at least have some way to segue into different jokes.

Well... "um" isn't inherently bad- but it works best if you actively figure out where to place it within a joke. Um's work like silences in that they are a tool that can enhance a joke. I definitely understand that you want to separate yourself from other comedians but that doesn't mean you can't take notes. I mean, they make us laugh for a reason
Working on delivery should probably be your main focus. Even mediocre jokes that usually don't get laughs can get laughs just from the delivery of it. It's all about balance. Also try doing stories or making transitions.
I enjoyed the jokes, which says a lot becuase I'm English and obviously we invented humour (along with telephones, jet engines, computers and the internet).
The heavy breathing joke did get a huge laugh from me, as did the cancer joke, and I liked the sillyness of the ambidextrous friends one too. Definitely more than a few chuckles in at the rest of the material also.
I like the fact that you don't have an annoying on stage persona, and come across as fairly deadpan and depreciating. This is certainly my type of humour.
I think pacing wise you could probably get away with some additional well timed pauses, and I like the way you comment on how you feel the set is going. That gives a nice connection with the audience.
I laughed at the kids joke, but I think you should basically use that as some kind of set up for another gag - though the joke was good, I assumed you were going to use your audience's response in order to have a come back or lead to another joke. When you didn't... this made me sad.
But otherwise I think you're pretty darn good! There seem to be thousands of really shit comedians out there, so you should be very proud that you are far superior to all of these.
...
Also, and slightly off tangent, isn't it weird how there are no good female comedians? I often wonder why that is.

this is literally how my current favorite comedian, Brian Regan, works. Some of his jokes are terrible, but his delivery is impeccable. He might be a good comedian to observe
I live in LA and just got a bunch of free tickets to the Comedy Store from my boss. When's your next set?
There are three rooms out there, the tickets you got probably only work for the Original Room but I'm not sure.
The room comics at my level usually perform at are in the belly room and in order to get stage time we have to bring around 7 to 10 people to shows. They are called bringer shows and I usually don't do them unless I'm taping it. I hate bringer shows.
My goal for this year is to become a regular at one of the comedy clubs and be able to do sets without having to promise to bring people. I think I have the jokes now just need to get through the politics and there are a ton of politics just like any entertainment industry.
Short Answer: I don't know when I'll be at the comedy store but tonight I'll be Hollywood Billiards 5750 Hollywood BLVD.
Also for all you guys in LA the Comedy Store is holding a March promotion where all of march is free just need two drinks. Here is the link .
You have some funny jokes. Interesting observations and takes.
I found the pauses between the jokes kind of awkward, and the two moments you point out people in the crowd and comment about them not laughing or paying attention felt a bit uncomfortable.
With some transitions between topics or by pooling the jokes into a story that would allow you to tell them all in some kind of chronological way I think Id get more out of them.
That said I think you have a pretty good set and look forward to hearing more.
Quite funny to be honest, and I find my favourite comedian for telling set-up and punch line jokes is Jimmy Carr. If you want to see someone tell those types of jokes perfectly, with great timing then take a look at him.
You're timing is off, but with refinement you can get better.
To add a little variety, you need a story joke. Not only that, but if they were to tie into other jokes as well it will make the punchlines hilarious.\
Your stage presence looks relaxed, yet awkward at times. You have certain... twitches? You fidgeting with the microphone stand in pauses will make you loose your stage energy. (ex: swaying it side to side, lifting it up.)
Might want to lose that kid joke... You lost a lot of energy after that one. Especially when you looked down at the floor ashamed.
Don't be afraid to Interact with the crowd, but don't point them out. Acknowledgment is good, but just pointing one out directly if they are not laughing at you is sorta... lame. It will show your audience that your looking to make someone laugh and not having a good time. You have a good time, they will have a good time. It's all about that cool energy you have. Your body posture fits it so you can be relaxed.
Ex: The superman joke when the girl told you to take it off? That had potential. Wear a nice pearl snap shirt and instead of having a regular shirt, you can have a superman one. "The S is for Stefan" Even if you don't have an acknowledgment you can still play it off.
It was a good act man. Keep up the great work.
You can add onto the wife joke too where you say she is thin. She could say you were hot.

I personally don't think you should lose the kid joke. I do think you should address it in your routine. Have some kind of standard extra joke to say if the crowd takes it the wrong way. In fact, I think a lot of your jokes could have at least one or two other lines built out of the initial premise. Just go with the flow and don't think don't think of them as being confined to only what you have written.

Theres a guy I really like whos been at the Comedy Store and he tells the most awful jokes imaginable (But I cant remeber his name), not bad jokes but stuff about raping his grandma and such. So the kids joke can work, you just need maybe a lead out line or something which defuses the initial premise after getting the reaction you want from them.
Dude your jokes are great, but I can't watch you on stage. It just makes me feel like a nervous wreck. So I just listened, and laughed a lot. Fuck those assholes, the kids joke was hilarious, perverse, dirty, and disgusting. But it was funny.

Anthony Jeselnik Anthony Jeselnik? I usually end my kids joke with " a lot of people say you can't say that, but I just did . . . it was easy." For some reason i didn't that day not sure why.
Nah, I spent like an hour looking for him yesterday but I cant remmeber his name, hes got a bald head, relatively young, piercings, tatoos, seems to wear a cap every time I've seen him, quite skinny and tall and tells nothing but totally vulgar jokes like doing disabled people.

While its a nice idea and you have a decent set, wouldn't PAX already be fully booked up for acts/talks?
I enjoyed it. It takes balls to do what you did, I'd be red faced and flushed just up there.
