Howdy, so I have the Genesis Ultimate Mega collection dealy, and have a hankering for some good old school RPG greatness.

I have the option between the four Phantasy Star games, and then Shining Force II.

I'm leaning toward Phantasy star, but am Curious how the plot is? I'm a big fan of a cool story, so bonus points there.

So, what's the best game out of the Four Phantasy Stars and Shining Force?

That honor goes to Phantasy Star IV, and I say that as a die-hard fan of Phantasy Star II.

I really liked Shining Force 2. Are those the only options in the ultimate mega collection thing?

I had the sega ultimate collection, and after beating PS IV for like the 10th time in my life, except this time on a new console, i felt i'd gotten my money's worth of the disc. Then i saw PS II, and realized i had a ways to go still.

Lunar and Lunar 2. Seriously, more people need to know about these games.

Play them and tell your friends.

One of the PS games was sooooooo slow, but soooooo good. I mean it was so hard to play, but I yearned to play it. This was almost 15 years ago it seems. I yearned.

Which was it? I feel like it was II or III, it could have been IV, but I doubt it. IV was around the same time as SNES FF III right?

I mean, this was just the slowest thing that ever slowed, the game took a break and tried to catch this three toed sloth that got loose in my house this one time, but man that sloth was so fast. I felt bad for the game.

What I'm trying to say is that this game was slow, but if there is a faster version I want to play it because it was compelling.

Yes these are two of the best RPGs ever.

Although I noticed that the playstation remakes were a bit uuh... easier.

Does PSII continue it's frustrating nature? It's decidedly old school.

Yes, it does. However, if you take the time to level up for a couple of hours in the beginning of the game it makes the rest of the game incredibly easy. PM me if you want in-depth info about what you should do at the beginning of the game. I've beaten PSII at least 20 times.

I played Lunar II up until the fight on the statue/castle thing where you fight on the statue's hands if I recall.

if someone wants to send me a PS2 and Lunar 2 I'll gladly play it :-P

Umm...All except for the part where he specifies that he's looking for the best PS/Shining force titles.

Even so, I reiterate, and add that Shining force 2 is worth playing.

Also, as another tangent, if you ever get the chance to play the Ys games, do it.

Edit: The lunar games aren't on the sega mega collection? What the fuck is that about?

The Lunar games weren't made or even published by Sega, that's why. And the Sega CD versions are the definitive ones.

I don't expect they'll ever get republished, either, unless the Wii somehow manages to add Sega CD compatibility to the VC(and I would love to see that), but since Working Designs has the rights to their Lunars, it's still not likely.

Honestly, it doesn't bother me as much as the cover art for the original Phantasy Star. That cover art made zero sense.

You took the words out of my mouth. The original PS cover art is just kind of "huh?" but i also have to agree PS II had some pretty horrid looking cover art as well. Art that looked absolutely nothing like the art contained in the game.

Also every time PS is discussed in any thread it makes me wish the Sega Ages remakes had made it out of Japan. I'd kill to have those remakes in english.

You and me both. It's not hard to find either of the remakes on ebay and such, but I can't read Japanese, which makes it difficult to play through them.
