I have a launch day 60GB PS3. It's been a goddamn tank since I bought it. No problems aside from very rare freezing during games (like maybe once a year) and freezing while surfing the web. Unfortunately, the web browser freezing has gotten worse recently, and last night my PS3 suddenly shut itself off with three beeps while I was surfing. After that, the red standby light was blinking. I was able to turn it back on and successfully ejected my Uncharted 2 disc.
I'm just wondering if these are symptoms of a dying system.
I had a somewhat similiar issue last night. Playing COD4, and the game froze upon the round ending. Just locked up totally. A soft (re: pressing the power button) reset did nothing, so I flipped the rear panel switch. Turned it back on fine, except now it won't read discs.
Everything else works, just no discs. It's a launch 60gb as well.
The system overheated. If it happens again it may lead to the YLOD error, which will kill it. You may want to back up your data now just in case. If it does break you can either send it back to Sony for $160 or you can try and fix it yourself. I've done both and I'll be fixing it myself from now on.

If it's an overheating issue, then it sounds like my fan may have died. I was only on it for an hour or so, and it's in a decently ventilated place. I've been on it for far longer (folding, Warhawk marathon runs, etc) without any problems.
You can test that out by seeing if the fan runs when you start it up. You'll definitely want to get a can of air and spray it out. (don't use a vacuum)
With the PS3 power switch in the off position, turn power switch back on while holding down Eject button. This "fan test" mode allows you to clean out the dust inside the PS3. It works for Models CECHG and higher. (Note that a plugged in PS3 Slim does not have a power switch at all and is always in standby).
I'm not sure if it'll work, because I'm not sure if "CECHG and higher" means "CECHA through CECHG" or "CECHG through CECHQ". It should only take you a few seconds to try, anyways.
Your ps3 is not dying.you just Kill the info bar, delete game cache, those don't work, use the backup utility and then restore default settings.Your problem may be solve.
not to highjack, but I've basically the exact same thing.
60gb, launch day ps3, newwest firmware, and I'm not getting freezing in games (I don't play that many), but I'm getting a lot of skipping during bluray playback.. could this be similair?

Pretty sure if you send Sony a BC 60GB, you get a refurbished BC 60GB back.
For $150, probably. I was hoping to undercut that a bit if possible.
