If PAX isn't opening until 2pm, why not tuck into some delicious dim sum before you get in line to fortify yourself with?
The details (so far)
What: Dim sum! If you haven't had it before, it basically works like this: you sit down, the restaurant has a bunch of carts being pushed around the restaurant, each of which has different dishes on offer. If you see something you want, you point and they put it on your table. You eat yummy things, and then at the end they count up your plates and that's how much you owe. Plates all tend to be small-ish, containing 1-4 of each item (usually around...oh, maybe 1-8 mouthfuls?) so you can try lots of different things.
Who: Numbers may or may not be limited depending on interest and what restaurants can accommodate
Where: China Pearl, 9 Tyler St. Boston, MA. This means that we will either be walking or taking the T.
When: Friday, March 26 at around 10:00am (meeting at 9:30am in the Sheraton Lobby)
How:
Based on past experience, here's the general idea:
- PM me if you want to go with a rough estimate of how many of you there will be, contact info is usually nice in case stuff changes.
- If there are too many people we will break into groups of however many fit at a table before descending on the restaurant. This is important because A) this is an informal thing and
it's different than at PAX Prime, I just don't want to have to reserve some private space at the restaurant; however, I do want to give them a bit of warning on how many people might show up at the same time.
- Everyone eats, because we're divided up by table each table is responsible for balancing their check/cost.
- All tables wander back to the PAX site whenever they're ready.
Anyway, PM me if you're interested in coming, once again this isn't a formal organized event like the pre-PAX dinner, it's more along the lines of "I want to go do dim sum, and if others want to too then we can walk over together and socialize while we chow down!"

We (4 of us) would want to be in on this depending on if we get to Boston in time. Driving from NJ, leaving super early but traffic in CT can be pretty brutal, no idea what sorts of rush hours we are going to hit.

yea, I'll be busy chugging bloody marys and eating man breakfast (hash, eggs, hashbrowns, etc)

Maybe this can be option 2 for those of us who might not make the Friday event.

But I'll still say maybe, since Dim Sum might be good to eat before the con. I'll need to eat something after all. I can't just survive on ChildsPlay cookies!
Though I wish I could.

Didn't think of the whole lining up thing, might be a big wait for the Keynote.
I think I will have to defer to the Sunday dim sum as well. Might be easier on our crew.

All good dim sums are like this though, so any serious dim sum fan should not be put off by it. Mark me down for 5 people.
For large groups do they take dim sum reservations?
I KISS YOU!
Have you ever done dim sum before?
It all depends on how adventurous you are, the first time I went to dim sum I went nuts and tried just about everything on every cart, since then I have reeled myself in a bit and stick to only what I like. Must have spent $30 on just my half that day. The person I was with said it is never supposed to cost that much.
Each dish costs $1 ~$3 and comes with 3 or so of the same item. Normally everyone shares everything so it's split pretty evenly.

Problem with making a reservation is that who knows who will actually show up.

Never before. I love to try new things and eat a lot though. I guess I'll think about it.
i'm around all of monday without much to do yet.

Beyond that we probably need:
Someone who knows how to get from the Sheraton to the restaurant. And maybe someone to get a head count and warn the restaurant of the decending PAX horde?

I had someone call them last week, they told him that unless there is over 15 people then it's a first come first serve sort of thing.

Anything else?
Sounds more than agreeable to me.

Very astute. I couldn't agree more. Dim Sum is best enjoyed this way to begin with, when everyone orders and puts food (and money) into a communal pile.
We will be at China Pearl a little before 10 am. Looking forward to gorging myself and then heading back to PAX for day 3.

Meeting in the Sheraton lobby for 9:30 adventure start.
If we reach 10 we might be able to make reservations, but like mad_typist says, I wonder what will come of us if it does indeed fall apart as such things tend to do.
