What is some music that has blown your mind, or inspired you, recently?
I'm in quite the music listening lull and have no idea what to look into. The last two albums that I really got into were Eminem's Relapse and Them Crooked Vultures. Before that, In Rainbows was probably the last thing I really dug.
So recommend me some stuff to check out please. I don't care about genres, but preferably something that isn't too bizarre or hard to get into (I know this somewhat contradicts loving In Rainbows and Them Crooked Vultures, but whatever).
The Mars Volta. Check out their Bedlam In Goliath album, good stuff.
Murder By Death. I recommend starting with In Bocca Al Lupo, or Red of Tooth and Claw albums to start.
I've listened to The Mars Volta in the past, with mixed results. I really liked some if it, but in the end I just didn't have the patience to sit through all of the stupid boring crap. Is that album structured better or is there still 2 minute intros of birds chirping?
This whole album (The Dark Third) is gripping from start to finish. It's indescribable. There's a lot going on and it comes together in a very tightly-knit whole.
Yes, that's where my av came from.
(edit second vid had sound problems so I replaced it. Audio's from the album some guy just put it over edited live footage)
The music video is really good too, but a little on the deranged side if you're easily freaked out by stuff. I should note the video is exclusively fan made.

There's a lot less of the ambient sound thing on Bedlam In Goliath. Also, their newest album, Octahedron, has a lot more mellow and radio-friendly-length tracks. They call it their "pop" album. It's really good too.

Put some Gnarls Barkley in your earholes. I can't recommend "the Odd Couple" enough as an album. The singer's got a voice I'm continually impressed with.
If you don't already have it and you don't hate them, pick up the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Blood Sugar Sex Magic" album. Everyone knows Give it Away and Under the Bridge, but the album is full of other great stuff.
Audioslave's self-titled album (because they still mostly had Morello on his leash on that album) is great rock all around. Metric's latest, "Fantasies", has some absolutely excellent music on it. I also love Sam Robert's "Love at the end of the world", and "Chemical City". I hope you find something you like. (Please validate my life choices...)
It's a shame OK GO punch so far above their weight with their viral marketing.
But on the other hand, they were a forgotten one hit wonder before they pulled that stuff. They're still forgotten commercially, but at least they can push a few albums. They really broke new ground there.
I maintain that the Radiohead video I posted is about as self-descriptive as you can get. That is, it's ALL I NEED.
And they've been mentioned before but srsly the mars volta fellas. I got hooked on them years ago through a similar thread. They have a lot of shit that's way out there but "The widow" is my favorite song in years.
And this has got to be the most pretentious form of music I've ever listened to, but it has an awesome atmosphere and it's great to chill out to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aLjup934Rk
That's less than half of the entire song.
The protomen to me are like a modern day queen. Though I'll probably get egged for saying that. I can't listen to the hounds without getting a jolt of energy.

I love the beat and melody of this song, and Dan has a great voice.

Something kind of heavier. Progressive death metal at its finest

And Murder By Death is a band like Johnny Cash would have made if he grew up with punk and country in equal doses and then decided to add a cello player. They're great. Edit: Here: http://murderbydeath.bandcamp.com/album/red-of-tooth-and-claw

ps - if you missed the hype-wave around them Arcade Fire is pretty incredible.

The last Belle Orchestre album had some really nice stuff.
Land of Talk are generally great, but this song in particular is just so nice to listen to. And the video is really cool as well.
Not new, but one band that's always inspired me is Electrelane. I don't know exactly how or why, but their music had a huge influence on me.

And there's always Shad for a quick pick me up.

And you can't go wrong with some of The Knife's music.
And I know you mentioned In Rainbows, but I have to listen to this song every couple of weeks just because.

Skip to 1:40 for the start, listen to AT LEAST through the solo on the bass clarinet. It's one of the funkiest jams I've ever heard.

Her album is really great. So good. Highly recommend.
Kin Za Za - I am a Dance
Nice music, nice album. A little rare. Good if you're into that.
Brand New - Jesus Christ
This song is my favourite off of their album The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me. Highly recommend this album as well.
And now for something completely different!
The Hoosiers - Goodbye Mr. A
