I did specify "the episodes I watched".

Knowing that there are 20 series means little to me. There are what, 500 or 1000+ episodes of various Dragonball incarnations. Doesn't mean it's good, just highly popular with its target audience.

Apples and oranges. Dragonball is basically a continuation of the same story in all of its incarnations. That isn't the case with Gundam, though some series and OVAs are related to others while other series aren't or are in an entirely different timeline. Some are also more terrible than others.

Gundam 00 had more shit talking from the smug antagonists (namely in the second season) than the protagonists, even when most of the first season had the protagonists with far better mobile suits than everyone they walked all over.

Even then you didn't have much communication between between opposing sides, aided partly by the power source of the Gundams since it jammed communications used by the "normal" mobile suits.

Okay, so what are the "non-shitty" Gundam series?

Edit; this is straying tangentally from the OP, and for that I apologize. Perhaps I should just drop that in an anime thread and watch the fur fly...

I disagree in every way that a person can disagree. That show seemed much more like the Dragonball Z of Gundam Series.

I liked Gundam Wing for the politics and the Gundam designs, and I liked almost all the characters (fuck you, Quatre). The reason this one might not be for you, is that sweet merciful christ it is ridiculously decompressed. It takes many episodes for things to happen, and that part is annoying.

Gundam: 08th MS Team is essentially Gundam: Band of Brothers. It's pretty good.

We had a thread here in H/A a few months ago asking what Gundam was supposed to be the 'good' one. 8th MS Team got a lot of the votes, including mine. Its about as far from the typical Gundam series as you can find.

Band of Brothers with giant robots does sound pretty good.

And I vaguely recall the shitty series I saw having number'ish sounding names... so Quatre is setting off warning bells. (edit: and by Shitty, I'm including "it taking forever for anything to happen" along with the smug monologuing)

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah, Wing requires a certain kind of patience (or Gundam fanaticism) that I don't expect everyone to have. It may have been the series that you watched.

But 08th MS Team is definitely better paced and probably has better character development.

I should watch that again, I know it's buried somewhere in the basement.

    Gundam

Ugh, how I loathe (what I've seen of) Gundam.

The episodes I watched exemplified what I like to call "smug anime", which is to say that long periods of the episodes were taken up with slow panning shots across the protagonist as he grinned in self satisfaction, explaining how his enemy had already lost the fight, etc, etc. Dragonball and what few episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh also epitomized this, and dispite several friends of mine gushing over how good Dragonball Z was, I could only take so many episodes of this (and the homoerotic grunting/powering up) before I chose to pass on the rest.

Don't get me wrong, NGE has plenty of faults and flaws, most of them touched upon in this thread. I'm sure many people find the pretentious philosophizing monologues given by many of the main characters just as grating, I just found it funny to see Gundam mentioned.

I do love DBZ and I do own the entire series on DVD but my god... alot of it is just painfully boring to watch. hit the fast forward while the animators swap between two cells of goku's eyebrow twitching or whatever. read the manga it flows much better (albiet there is still stupid shit)

I'm definitely of the "bleh, don't bother" persuasion here, but if you're set on it, do it... a lot of folks really love the series. Just make sure you watch Martian Successor Nadesico afterward..

This didn't get enough love, so I'm quoting it. If you want to watch a show with lots of cute girls and goofiness, Nadesico is it. If you want to watch a show that disassembles the whole giant-robot-show genre, rather viciously, Nadesico is also it. It's one of the few shows that I've seen where I actually felt I was being made to think about what the message of the story was, and not in a vague "look! random symbolism!" way.
