Can someone marry us?

My fiance and I are coming up to PAX, it will be our first expo. We have been engaged for just over a year now. I was wondering if anyone that is attending is certified to marry two people? I think she would get a huge surprise out of this and would love it. Just thought I would see throw it out there.

I am only certified to marry 3 people. (Congratulations to the happy... uh.. triplicate.)

Seriously though, I think you might be able to find someone who can marry you. If this thing actually goes down we should try to get a 2 Player Production crew to record part of it.

Or you know, my crew, because we would be glad to record it if possible. :P

I don't think it would be too hard to find something though.

In the name of discordianism I can marry you two. All I need to do is look into both your eyes at the same time whilst waving my arms around. Then I need to spin and shout "BAMF!" and in the name of Eris, you shall be.

Actually, BAMF is more so something nightcrawler does when he teleports. So Prince has it down right. I don't unfortunately. But I am a pope. As is everyone here, as long as you disbelieve in the belief that Eris is the one, the mighty, crown royal king of Mystere.

Anyway, sorry for hijacking your thread. Congrats and hope you found someone :) My brother supposedly is a minister that can marry people, though unfortunately he is in Chicago. Not only is he in Chicago, he is not coming. If I do get to see the two of you marry, then I will hand you both a cookie and not just ANY cookie. But one of either of your choice. So make a decision, what kind of cookie would you like?

As an aside, if you do get this done at PAX, I would suggest contacting the appropriate convention organizey kinds of folks ahead of time to see if they might be able to provide any sort of space for this. I'm not saying a stage with a microphone, although that would be cool, but you don't want to get married in a broom closet, you know?

While your intentions are good, the general plan is not.

You and your fiancee are in this marriage together. Surprise proposals are great! Surprise weddings? Man, that just sounds like a terrible idea. "Here I am surrounded by a bunch of strangers in a really busy public place without any of my closest friends or family here except for my fiancee. I don't even have a proper wedding dress, or a cake, or even a damn photographer. Boy, my fiancee is a silly goose!" Perhaps you should query some of your her friends to see how they think she might react (positively or negatively). I guess it really depends on how important this day is to both of you. She might actually have a vision for her wedding that doesn't involve a gaming convention.

And if you're absolutely sure that this would be a happy surprise for her, then by all means go for it!

Well, see, the thing is, that if he wanted to do this, there's no legal way it could be done as a surprise. Any ceremony done as a surprise would be a token motion at best. And if he doesn't talk to her about it ahead of time, woe betide him.

    NOTA BENE:

There is one major flaw in the proposed idea if they live far enough away that they can't make a couple of trips down to Massachusetts before PAX. Both parties must appear in person at a city or town hall in order to apply for the marriage license. A couple of pages of paperwork get filled out, and then three days later you go back and pick up the license. There's a small fee - maybe twenty dollars at the most. After that, the license is good for sixty days - get married in that timeframe or you will have to re-apply the process.

The Commonwealth does not require a blood test nor does it bar marriage to nonresidents. Also, anyone wishing to perform the ceremony should contact their affiliated organization to make sure that the Commonwealth has your authorization to solemnize a marriage on file.

You can also petition to have someone who is neither clergy nor justice of the peace perform the ceremony but that requires six weeks advance notice.

Then it would be a token ceremony at PAX and really anyone could do it. But even so, if they wanted to do this they NEED to talk to official PAX people to get some space for this.

Sorry OP. :( I can still wave my hands around and say BAMF if you like. Though someone else did bring up a good point. If my boyfriend proposed to me and then tried to do a surprise marriage, I'd feel pretty damn crappy about it. I would like to have some say about my future with a guy that I planned to marry and also would love to make it extremely special and memorable in some shape or form. :winky:

Okay, maybe I shouldn't have used the word "surprise." I wasn't planning on just having a priest show up and drop some vows. We have been talking about getting married for quite some time now (by the way she does not even want a ceremony with friends and family, I am the one who does). By surprise, I meant she would be surprised that I would basically elope during our vacation up to PAX. I already told her about it and she was more than happy about it. It was just an idea, I don't really have a clue about the procedures to get officially married, I was just seeing if it was possible. We might just stop in NY on our way up or our way back to do it, I just thought during PAX would be fun, and she more than agreed.

Thank you for the people who gave me good advice about the process, I did not know about the whole license laws in MA, guess down here in the south you can do whatever you want =) Kidding. Again it was just an idea, and I thought I would see if it was possible.

When I first read this thread I was thinking "get Mike and Jerry's OK, plan it ahead of time, get on mic at a Gabe and Tycho Q&A and ask them to perform a quick marriage ceremony. You both run up on stage, a quick drive-through wedding like ceremony happens, DVD footage, everyone cheers, you go back down to your seats and they take the next question. Total time maybe 3-5 minutes." Not unreasonably complex but I could see this going both ways. Definitely not a stupid question, definitely worth asking.

And then the rest of the thread happened. I guess we'll all see.

See! This man shares our dream! We are just looking for a fun quick little marriage thing to do! That sounds more than perfect, though I think it's way to close to PAX to make it happen now, and there's no way my fiance will want till next year, already got it in head for this vacation. But still thanks!

I don't see such a huge logistical problem with the PAX side of things. If you needed a slot on the official schedule, or a room, or furniture or things arranged, yeah that would take time and planning. For the Q&A idea, all you'd really need is permission (which can theoretically be granted pretty easily) and time to make sure what little planning (index card to read vows from, involvement of a different Enforcer or staff member who is licensed to perform marriages if needed, etc.) got done.

I would say PM staff type people (one of Khoo, Dave, Heels, etc.) right away, be consice and specific about what you're asking for, and see if they'll be willing to do it.

Whether or not you guys manage this at PAX, congratulations! And I think having a quicky wedding at a con is a really fun idea. My wife and I almost eloped to one of those quicky wedding chapels in Nashville when we were dating, but decided to wait a bit longer, and have her parents spring for a big ceremony.

But again - I think this sounds like a fun idea.

Post back if you do manage to get permission - this would be fun to see.

Yes, but that was BigRed. :-P I'd still think it's worth asking. Edit: I mean, he linked Khoo talking about not doing a big wedding (lots of resources, really don't want to screw this up, etc.) without first asking if the OP was talking about a big wedding. I think we established a few posts ago that this topic is not about that.
