Inexplicable loss of sound

Before I left home today I turned off my computer by just tapping the front power button.

When I get home, while the computer is off, I plugged in a new pair of headphones bought today. When I boot I have no audio at all.

I tried the front ports, my old headset, made sure the right jacks were plugged into the right 3.5mm, reloaded the sound drivers for the mobo. (asus p5q pro w/ on board sound).

My volume mixer says there is sound playing, but I hear nothing.

I am at a loss, and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions? I know everyone says it, but I this just 'seems' to have happened for no reason.

Thank you for your time.

Stupid question, I know, but did you check your volume control? Windows has inexplicably chosen to check the "Mute All" checkbox on me a couple times.

You plugged the headphones in then started the PC up?

Try unplugging the headphones, restarting your pc and waiting until the PC has fully started up before sticking them in.

I've got a meh grade sound card and it's pretty picky about this very thing.
