So browsing around on Microsofts Accademic Alliance site (basically their student site) I found this

Invite a technical speaker to your university

Our technical lecture programme 'University Tech Talks' gives computer science-related departments in the UK the opportunity to invite an industry speaker to give a technical presentation to their students. Your students will get the latest insights on the most up-to-date Microsoft technologies and the chance to put questions directly to professional experts.

We have a wide range of topics on offer, including introductions to key Microsoft developer technologies, writing secure code and the new user interfaces in Windows Vista.

Dates are very limited, so don't miss out!

talks are on these topics -

The Computer Games Industry: An Overview
Over the last 30 years the computer games industry has transformed from its humble beginnings in programmers back bedrooms to a multi-billion dollar industry with huge financial backing. Projects cost millions of dollars to produce and can take teams of more than 100 people many years to complete. This session will explain what its like to work in the industry from the perspective of software development, the unique challenges it brings, the rewards and the level of technical expertise required.

Real Time Graphics for Computer Games: A Primer
Gaming has been a driving force behind the development of graphics rendering hardware for a number of year’s resulting in incredibly sophisticated consumer computing hardware. So what does it take to harness the power of this hardware? This session takes an in-depth look at rendering technology development on the XBOX360, how that technology can be leveraged in games and what will come in the near future.

Looks pretty intresting to me, and if I can get enough people together to go to it, I will be trying to get them to do this at durham next term.

Also, see if you can blag your way into any of their events they often have prizes along the lines of free software, likely including Vista around now.

and if you are near the Microsoft Campus in the Thames Valley, definately go to their Windows Vista & Microsoft Office 2007 launch event. Free vista and office 2007 for all!

If you go to the launch event, pick up a Vista for me and mail it to me and I will pay you some money.

These are my terms, do you accept?

Closest is Reading, but that's like a 2-3 hour drive, depending on traffic. Never been there either. :v:

Uh, no. We get to pay lots of money, but only after we've finished.

We are essentially doomed to debt (potentially lifelong) before we've started earning money.

Americans have it far, far worse as far as i'm aware, though.
I've been stunned into silence by the amount it can cost out there :(

Yeah, I was $100,000 in the hole after I graduated, and then I got married. Debt x 2.

i'm down about £13,000 total. It's a sizeable amount, but i think if i had $100,000 debt, i'd probably just cry. All day long.
