PS3 Died. Repair or replace?

I have a 2nd generation PS3 with full backwards compatability, 80 GB HD, 4 USB, and 3 other slots.

I got the dreaded 80010514 error playing FFXIII *cries*.

At the moment, I do not have a compatable hard drive to back everything up so I cannot format the HD (over 80 hours of RE5 alone).

Should I spend the $200 to repair it through Sony and possibly not get the same one back or get a new one?

Backwards compatability is a big issue.

worst comes to worse, you could always pick up a cheap ps2 for your BC needs.

I also have more virtual memory cards than I have physical memory cards.

IT is a CECHE01 model, BTW.

If backwards compatibility is a big issue, then the obvious answer is repair. Does that guarantee you'll get your BC back? No, but replacing it definitely guarantees that you won't. External hard drives (especially at the 80GB level) are cheap, so I would buy one, do the backup, and then risk the repair.

can't saves be transferred to usb sticks? even a 1gb should be enough for save files... or is there more that needs to be backed up

It's game specific. I know there's certain things in some games that are difficult/impossible to back up. I can't think of specifics off the top of my head, but this is something I'm going to have to deal with very soon cause my 80GB hard drive is just about full now.

Rock band and Demon's Souls saves at the least can't be backed up. Found that out the hard way...

I have a 500 GB portable HD but it is not compatable with the PS3.

My largest flash drive is only 4 GB and my PS3 save files are larger than 4 GB for individual games.

I have something in the works for a backup medium though.

Think I will probably get it repaired. They cannot guarantee the same unit will be returned but they guarantee the same model will be returned.

Can you update this thread or PM me with whatever you decide on for the backup medium? I'm going to want to backup as much as possible. Does that "backup PS3" option in the system menu cover the games that you can't backup using the save data utility?

Sure can do! My dad is savy with computers and is looking for something I can use. I won't know more about the backup utility until I have something to save it on.

At this point, all I know is that the PS3 won't look at it twice unless there is 20 GB of room on what ever you are using. I guess portable hard drives need to be in FAT-32 format, which mine is not.

I used an internal HD in one of these docks. Worked like a charm. If you send it in, you'll definitely lose whatever data is on there, and you're right, you may not get the same one back, but it will be the same model.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

FFXIII also fried my original 60 GB PS3 (CECHA01) on 3/13. I had not one problem with it since purchasing it in 11/2006. Then a few hours into FFXIII the game froze. It kept freezing at the same location in chapter 2 during each attempt and eventually would freeze any time the FFXIII disc was being read. On 3/13 I could still play anything but FFXIII without issue. On 3/14 some additional Blu-ray games and movies started freezing. I believe this was isolated to dual-layer discs. As of now no Blu-ray disc will play, though they are recognized like normal in the XMB. All PSX, PS2, DVD, CD & SACDs still work without issue.

This is a common problem with FFXIII. If you haven't already you should report your situation in detail to Square-Enix, Sony and post on some active threads.

Let me know what you end up doing. I'm in the same boat having a malfunctioning pre-purged features first generation PS3 that I don't want to give up.

I ended up using a 32GB Sandisc flash drive for the main backup. I manually copied the save data onto the same flash drive just to be safe. Note that you cannot copy whole virtual memory cards to a flash drive but you can copy the individual files in the memory cards.. As far as I know, these are not in the backup.

My PS3 is in the mail. If anyone is interested, I can post more updates.

For me, all games and discs quit working so I didn't have a choice. If you send yours in, you may not get yours back but you will get the same model back.
