So, I've done the hard work to get a good job for my age & now I'm working on my credit; but looking towards next year I'm going to get used & abused by the IRS if I don't learn the tax system. Obviously we're not talking about evasion but, where is the Deductions 101?

Accurately fill out your W-4, pay down all the interest on your student loans as the bills come along, make sure you get the paperwork to deduct that. Claim the EITC if you're eligible (which, if you've got a good job, you probably aren't).

That's pretty much it, assuming you're not making $100k+, and don't own your own house.

If you make a pile of money or are self-employed, get an accountant. If not for this year, then for next year.

If you are a regular, salaried employee, and you fill out a W-4 to set up your withholding, and get a W-2 at the end of the year listing your income and taxes withheld, it's pretty hard to fuck it up if you have nothing else complicated going on. If that isn't your situation, or you do have something complicated going on, repair to the stickied tax thread in this very forum, where a number of tireless professionals (mostly me) will be more than happy to assist you.
