Motion in 2d direct-x games looks like shit

Can anyone help me with this? I'm playing, or rather, trying to play Cave Story right now, and whenever I set it to a resolution (including full-screen) other than 320x240, I experience some really nasty...something...during the portions of the game where the screen scrolls. It's kind of like tearing. It's like I get these nasty wavy lines moving from the bottom to the top of the screen. It kind of feels like I'm underwater or something, and it really hurts to look at. Can anyone help me fix this problem? V-sync is forced ON, and I'm on an nvidia 7900GT.

Maybe look around for double/triple buffering in the driver's control thingie? Forcing a specific refresh rate might also help - for DirectX games you can do it in start->run->dxdiag I think in the last tab; for LCDs I think you would want 60 or 75Hz, for CRTs 100Hz will be good enough, though you might want to disable it if your CRT can't do 100Hz in higher resolutions you play other games in.

Triple buffering is enabled, and my two monitors are an LCD and a CRT TV, both of which are only capable of 60 Hz.

Still hasn't solved the problem :(

LCD monitors don't work at a refresh rate. Leave the setting at 60 Hz, it doesn't apply anyhow. If your CRT only operates at 60 Hz at the resolution you're at, you could probably drop your resolution down and be able to increase that.

If V-Sync and triple buffering are both enabled and you're getting tearing like that, I'd suggest checking for driver and DX updates.

It still defines the rate at which the video card will be sending the picture and some LCDs only like certain values.

Marty81: try using Driver Cleaner Pro when installing newer drivers/reinstalling present ones. I think you can still find the free version floating on the internet.

Update: It's happening on my work computer, too, which uses a 9800 Pro and a CRT at 85 Hz. I really think this is a directx problem. Has noone ever run into this while playing Cave Story?

I'll try to FRAPS it, but I'm not sure if it'll pick up the waviness effect or not.

I see a very subtle effect along the lines of what you describe. My guess is that the program ignores one or more of the PC's settings, like V-sync or double/triple buffering.

Have you tried asking on one of the fan forums for the game?
