Why so many people are actively unintersted in history. They don't treat it like any old subject, people seem to go out of their way to completely misunderstand or ignore everything about it

    It is hideously frustrating.

I can't get enough of it.

I think the main thing that puts people off it, is the fact that it is an endless expanse.

Written, scholastic history isn't quite endless. it's just magnificently complicated, and could teach us so much more about causality and human nature if people would take time to give more of a shit

go ask anyone on the street where the selucid empire was and how it came into being and they will be so confused

What's just as frustrating are the people who claim to actually like history, but in reality they just love World War II.

World War II is the Wolverine (X-men) of American history. It's the only thing people care about even if there are a ton of other awesome things surrounding it. But nope, that's the thing the most merchandise, movies, etc are made about.

History comes pretty easy for me. I remember stressing out over my history final last semester when I thought to myself, "Wait, I've done well on all the essays in this class and I pretty much know all the material. Why am I stressing out?" So I didn't stress out.

Recently, I had a gap in my historical knowledge between ~1600 - 1900. I rectified that, & am now a massive Napoleon fanboy.

I never learned history in school and so I have huge gaps.
The problem is that we all have opinions about current events, and those are related to history, so sometimes I'm missing really big components. Like I was telling my history-buff friend how much I hated Woodrow Wilson, and how he was a borderline despot and a warmonger, and it turns out he was really against World War I.

One of these days I should learn history. I find myself being blase about my ignorance too often, sort of the way Barbie says "math class is hard."

I have a friend who grew up in Georgia (the republic) and speaks fluent Russian. Love the language, it's just so far removed from anything I'm familiar with that I'd have a hell of a time learning it.

I've always had a particular interest in Russian 20th century history because I love the Cold War. (nuclear arms race, the red scare, etc) Though I've never researched it as much as I'd like because by the time I'm through with assignments for class I'm typically burned out and want to do something other than read more history books. It's something I'll probably finally start researching on my own time after I graduate.

I'd love to switch majors and study the history of that whole area. But I'm stuck as a sad, lame, English Major who is going to take spanish because he's had it crammed down his throat forever and it's easy.

Learning Russian and studying in the caucus is my pipe dream, like people who think they're going to be important artists.

My fiance and son both happen to have the same week off (next week) so I took a week off from work.
Plan on maybe heading up to Yellowstone.
Last year we went to the Grand Canyon. It was rather cool.

I've got a minor in Spanish because for my degree we have to take 12 hours in the subject anyway. So I just took two more classes and qualified for a minor.

If I take one more class I'd be qualified to teach the subject in grades 7-12 in 38 states. I really need to take that extra class.

Maybe I will finally get to kiss my bearded mountain-man neonazi friend.

The weird thing is, that guy is really one of my most trustworthy, rad associates ever. Which furthers my confusion.

Okay, someone refute this for me specifically:

He claims that there is no way four million people died in the holocaust. He backs this claim up by asserting Auschwitz did not have the capacity to kill that many people without leaving evidence; simultaneously, he says we never found mass graves on the scale, and that "there was only one incinerator, and the gas chamber was used for laundry."

Then he says that the only honest German "scholar" (heavy emphasis on the quotes, there) to make historically accurate claims is in prison for his opinions now.

If I recall, wasn't that guy a batshit insane Nazi?
