n. A bittersweet longing for things, persons, or situations of the past.

Us gamers are quite the nostalgic bunch!
With DLC being planed before launch becoming the norm
or mandatory multilayer and DRM it's easy to look back and be reminded of the good 'ol days.

That's what his threads for!
Post your pictures, videos or just memories of the fun time you had in a time that felt.
I'll start

I relativity young company wanted to join in on 3-D games making, they called themselves Naughty Dog.
After a few projects Sony Computer Entertainment commissioned them to make a game that would show them as one of the most talented Video game companies and eventually lead to them being brought by SCEA

Crash Bandicoot

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0asnLZeYvE

This game not only consumed me after I got it for my 7th birthday but t made me a Sony console fan.
I would play this game everyday with my sisters and it took me 6 months to finally get around to finishing it.

What are some of your favorite games and memories of your gaming past?

@ Raiden - my brother and I loved Base Wars.

My favorite gaming memory from being a kid was when my older brother and I would rent an SNES or Genesis from the video store and stay up all night playing like our lives depended on it. We'd usually also buy two litres of ice cream - a box - and we'd cut in half, so each of us would be sitting downstairs with a gigantic bowl and a huge cube of ice cream in it.

The time we experimented with peppermint chocolate chip did not work out so well.

I still remember us taking turns through world 1 of Super Mario World, listening to his cheesy early 90s rap. PM Dawn, yo.

I miss when everything felt like a new experience, which I guess is when I started heavily in the NES era. Mario felt different from Castlevania which felt different from Mega Man which felt different from Contra which felt different from Zelda II which felt different from Ninja Gaiden...

Yeah, they were all platformers, but they all seemed so distinct.

Asterix for the NES. It was so awesome. Sure, even when I was a kid I knew the plot didn't make any goddamn sense (Obelix gets captured by the Romans? How?), but it was a pretty fun and surprisingly diverse platformer with some awesome music.

    Loved that game.

I miss games like WW2Online or Planetside. I remember in WW2 Online I would just hide in a city and wait for an enemy to come and I would pick them off with my sniper rifle. Or getting on vent with a few of my friends and sneaking into an enemy post and taking it, I don't know why it was so fun but I tried to get back into it and I just feel like I don't have the time anymore.

Actually every game I play I feel like I am rushed, like I have so little time to do things now. I wish I could get back that feeling of just playing a game and enjoying, not having to manage my time so strictly. I want to be 12 again :(

I'll be that guy, I miss going into the mall on a Saturday with friends when I was just able to start going out without my parents, and spending the afternoon in Aladdin's Castle. We also had a (poorly named) arcade outside the mall called Funway Freeway that twice a year would lock people in from 10pm to 10am for like 20 dollars, and just have all the games on free play for the night. Love console gaming, and love it even more with voice (and am crazy anticipating Gameroom) but I do remember all the tough, fun oldschool games, and just going up against random strangers and just hanging out in there with friends for the day.

Oh, and I still remember being really little and seeing a line out of the arcade into the mall for a single game, and seeing peering around the line to see Dragon's Lair for the first time.

I miss how I used to get so damn excited about a new game.

Calling around to all the local stores to see if they had a copy, then the endless begging my parents for it, then the excited ride to the store, getting giddy seeing it in the display case, having to open it and read the booklet before getting home, and finally cramming it into the slot of my NES and powering up and enjoying.

I distinctly remember that whole leadup when I got my copy of Super Mario Bros.

When I got the Legend of Zelda for my 10th Birthday, unboxed it and saw the shiny shiny gold cartridge. Man, that was so awesome.

Now it's all just sort of "meh", and it makes me sad.

I miss that too, I hardly even look at previews for games or any videos. I loved ME1 and I beat the game probably six times, but I didn't see a single video of the game (I saw the weird promo CGI trailer but thats it) I just waited for it to come out.

I have been burned too many times on crappy games, investing all this time getting excited about it and then it turns out the game sucks. I remember the game Dawn, pretty much the ultimate MMO, that I spent weeks being obsessed about before I realized it would probably never come out. That reminds me, I need to check glitchless.com again.

Well put! I recall getting pumped up buying my first (and only) shareware title... what was it called again? Sango Fighter! Sister and I took turns playing through the main storyline quests. We actually begged the parents for the buy, and they succumbed to our "pretty pretty please?" pleas.

I also fondly remember downloading the Doom shareware over AOL or whatever I was using back then. Literally had my eyes glued to the progress bar.

Otherwise, loved all those old DOS adventures from LucasArts like Monkey Island.

My first experience with videogames was the Nintendo Entertainment System.

I received a NES Action Set for my fourth birthday from my godparents, whom where also an aunt and uncle. They sent me down a path my mother often lamented about later: VIDEOGAMES.

    nes-system.jpg

So not only is my birthday (year) shared with that of the NES' US launch, but my first videogame was Super Mario Bros. How more perfect can it get than that? Duck Hunt was great as well, and unfortunately it was the only game I owned that utilized the Zapper, as I was too young at the time to know how to seek out other games that used it. It was also the first and last videogame my father ever played.

Fun Fact: I never actually finished Super Mario Bros. until I was like 19.

My first non-pack-in game was Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers. And it was FUCKING AWESOME.

    3473860103_ccdfcd24ab.jpg

My first real video game and still remains one of my favorites. I only acquired maybe about 15 or so games throughout owning the system but I rented far, far more. The game I got after C&D, if I remember properly, was Rad Racer. The last game I received while games were still being sold new in stores was The Jungle Book, which was a birthday present in 1994.

The old girl is still around. One 72-pin connector replacement later she works like new and I play with her a bit every week, original controllers and everything.

    n1370419557_304346_6167516.jpg

The SNES in the picture is a system I acquired much later in life, as I moved from the NES directly to Windows 3.1, via the 486SX Packard Bell my father purchased in '92. This was when CD-Rom drives in computers were just gaining popularity, and as such I kind of skipped over the entire 16-bit generation of consoles entirely and I didn't own another console until my N64 acquisition in 1997.

I did own a Game Gear in this period as well, which my parents purchased after I had interest in owning a handheld game system. They fell for the marketing and bought me the one with the color screen. I had a ton of awesome games, including Streets of Rage 2 & Sonic Triple Trouble, so I was satiated just fine.

I'll get into the PC and beyond stuff in a bit more in a later post.

I spent months drawing robot masters in school before getting Megaman 2 for my birthday. I used to fantasize about having one of my creations in a game. I'm willing to pretend that Commando Man is based on my Tank Man from when I was making Megaman HD, though. Close enough for me.

What I remember most about gaming when I was a kid is trying to squeeze all the enjoyment I could out of terrible games. My parents rarely bought games. It was typically a birthday/Christmas thing. So I would borrow a lot of games from my friend, and while his parents would get him sweet games like Mario, Zelda, or Mega Man, his extended family scraped the bottom of the bargain bin. So he would loan me classics like Flying Warriors.

It was pretty terrible, but I would play the shit out of it anyways, since I didn't have much else to play.

Exactly! I think I can count on my fingers the games that I have actually finished in the last maybe.. two years? The way you would buy a game and then only have that one new game for months and months until your allowance or whatever would allow you to purchase another one. I'm so jaded that even great games sort of barely hold my attention, rather than me being superexcited just because I have a game to play.

While I agree that I miss how excited I would get as a kid anticipating a new game, I have to admit that the actual "playing the game" part is a lot more enjoyable now that I can buy what ever game I want. So overall, I prefer the present.

However, I did let myself get carried away and bought way too many games, to the point where just looking at my collection and picking one game to play was a chore in itself. Its kinda like those home schooled kids that go nuts when they go away to college. I overcompensated.

games really used to capture my imagination. I would find myself daydreaming about them, I'd draw pictures of them, I'd think up story ideas for sequels or cartoons.

today, I don't even play every day. I mainly play multiplayer games online, like SF or COD, or UFC with a friend. I'll only sit down and get immersed in a single player game if one comes out that can engage me as an adult the way games used to as a kid. These are few and far between. GTA 4 is one such game, and I can't even think of another example.

so i guess i'm the other extreme.
