Can burned DVDs work on a PS3?

I am converting some old VHS tapes to DVD and was wondering what (if any) types of burned DVD will work on it.

A friend at work loaned me some tryouts and none worked. Couldn't tell you how he burned them.

EDIT: I just found out after mentioning this thread to him that his DVD+VCR recorder has broken. So Burned DVD's can work?

As long as it's a media DVD I don't see why it wouldn't work.

He may have just burnt a whole bunch of DVD files and loaded them manually in his WinDVD Pro or something.

I haven't tried a data DVD but an actual DVD media type does work.
