Thanks Croak. If nothing else that should hopefully help reduce the split in the playerbase, since you only need one game to get access to all of the races.

It would have to anyway if it's not linking them all together with GFWL. I wonder if the chaos rising clear data will be of any use now then..

    Looks like it's not.

    http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/09/15/relic-ditch-games-for-windows-live-for-steam/
PC Gamer: Was there a specific event that prompted the change?

Jeff Lydell: Yes, it was the start of the Retribution project. We couldn’t do the switch on Chaos Rising because of the method we used to link campaign progress by importing save games. When we started work on Retribution we had a different plan for the campaign content. Rather than continuing with the exact same characters and progression, we’ve added new campaigns for different races and new stories. This meant we were free to change up that aspect of the game.

EDIT: Also, I wonder if this means we'll now be able to have matchmaking for coop this time, instead of friends list only coop.

At least inviting to a game is easier in Steamworks.

I suppose we have to start our 'accounts' anew, clearing our match records and rank for visual unlocks.

Not that I care about losing my warlock antlers with GFWL gone.

Losing GFWL makes up for losing my warlock antlers a thousandfold over though

If we were unlocking units like in C&C4 I'd be annoyed, but since that's all cosmetic, I can't say I mind.

Plus it's been a while since I played DoW2 online, so a skill rank reset would probably help me out some. :P

Steam will show you as playing DoW II instead of Chaos Rising if you click the shortcut for DoW II instead of the CR shortcut.

It all accesses the same game files and everything else though.

Sweet, that means I'll just skip Chaos Rising and go straight at Retribution instead.

If it's just multiplayer you're interested in, then yes, you could do that. But then you miss out on all our hard work on the original and Chaos Rising single player content. :

I'm not shitting on your games, Croak. I'm just not that interested in either Chaos or Spessmarines but an Ork and a Inquisition/IG campaign? Sign me the fuck up!

    Decals!

I just realised, now that the game's no longer tied to Live's content standards, I'm guessing you can allow us custom banners and things right? Like how we could customise them in DoW1? Or was that not a GFWL issue?

Please tell me that's the case and you're going to be allowing us to use our own, instead of just the limited selection that was in-game?

I dunno if this won't make me popular or whatever but I'll miss having no GFWL in the new Expansion.

GFWL always worked great for me, i have a core group of friends who play DoW and 360 with, extra achievements from PC, etc. I dunno, i never had a problem with it.

    Achievements aren't gone.

Even if you didn't have problems connecting with your friends you don't realize how GFWL affected the patching process.

It took an extra, what? 2 weeks to a month for a patch to go through GFWL cert.? Fuck that.

sorry, achievements that matter and add to my Live profile :)

I literally don't understand the point of steam achievements at all.

edit - did not know about that patching delay

Because they don't add epeen score they don't have a point?

    It's an achievement!

There are steam achievement score websites (using the % of people who have the achievement as a metric for the score) if you care about that nonsense.

MS really need to do something about the Certification process if they want to revive the GFWL service. That shit doesn't work on PC like they thought subscriptions would.

Yeah it's really really bizarre to me when people say "well these arbitrary goals that you can achieve are completely pointless compared to those arbitrary goals you can achieve but that also have an arbitrary point value attached to them."

I mean I've never been "into" the whole achievement culture thing, but saying that they need to offer points as well or else they don't matter just strikes me as weird. Doesn't that effectively mean that PS3 achievements (or trophies or whatever they're called) are also meaningless? I mean more meaningless?

EDIT: And yeah, patching took on an additional month around about because of GFWL certification.

One of the Relic devs posted this at RelicNews forums:
FYI on the bug fixing front a Steam patch can be applied in a matter of hours, most of which involve making coffee, chatting about the latest season of Survivor and pressing the upload button.

no because they are hardly integrated into my steam profile in any way or are cross referenced between games or a host of other reasons. if you play on your 360 at all the integration of achievements is completely different

edit - it's not that the achievements themselves are pointless, it's the way steam implements them, there's no reason to even have them in steam is my feeling but it depends what you like about them.

Even if it turns out that there will be no Inqusition campaign I'm going to have to buy this since my wife noticed that it had an Ork campaign. She doesn't like strategy games and she would never play this game by herself but she just love watching me play as the Orks in Dark Crusade so I'm pretty much obligated to pick up a copy of Retribution on release day. :)

Why would achievements need cross referencing in-between games

If you follow the steamcommunity blotter updates you can see updates of when your friends get achievements

You even get to see for achievements how many % of players obtained it. Some games (TF2, L4D) you see when players in the game obtain achievements. In TF2 items are tied to achievements etc.

The only difference being there's not a silly Gam0rSc0re attached to your steamcommunity page. I suppose they could show on your main profile page the latest x achievements obtained but I'm not too bothered. The power of steamcommunity to me is the ease of inviting people and the group chatrooms.

you know what I had a big post typed up but it's not worth it. The fact that you said 'Gam0rSc0re' to begin with already shows me that it's not worth having this conversation.

I would have used GamerScore but apparently that was already taken and trademarked.

Steam Achievements aren't as blingy enough on the main profile page but everything else you're missing is there, just check the blotter.

Eh, the only problem I've had with GFWL is the extra log in. I log into steam, start the game, then log into GFWL, then start the campaign. It's annoying, but it hasn't hindered my gaming yet. But still, I don't play online.

I do like to play online and I would LOVE to try that new Last Stand mode.

That is if GFWL would ever let me actually log online to play it. I have nothing against Live, I am playing many games happily on my 360 after all - but GFWL is complete and absolute balls. Also this hopefully means we'll get some prompt patches to fix major issues instead of having them linger for all eternity.

My friend bought his copies of DOW2 and Chaos Rising yesterday. I spent 2 hours fighting Windows 7, GFWL and regional settings to get it working for him. God. Worth it? sure, but you can't tell me this was the best solution for the consumer.

XBL and GFWL, though technically parts of the same system, are still wholly different beasts.

I'll gladly praised the former for what it's done for console online, whilst castigating the other for its shortsighted and often bizarre implementation.

Question: is there a reason when I launched DoW2 last week steam updated it by wiping the entire game install and redownloading something like 6 gig? And is there a reason it just did it again?

...the fuck. Can I copy a friend's directory or something? Last time it updated like this it took a week.

Shame I never really got into those games.

Hey Croak, do your peeps know about the Battle Cry bug on the latest version? If you have the highest energy ability as the Force Commander, when wearing Terminator armor, you can't use the Battle Cry ability, it literally disapears from your loadout.
