I'm doing a hard mode run. So far I've gotten to the cat tank in the labyrinth. The tricks I needed to come up with to avoid being hit have been very cool and made things that much more interesting. Usually I'd just take the 3 damage and be like 'whatever, I can get a heart'.

I also have no problem with the translation, or the music (haven't even noticed looping issues). This game is awesome. I guess I should have turned down the sound effects 'cause they are pretty loud!

One thing I did miss was the mini boss fight in the grasslands house with the one rabid mimiga. I guess it's only triggered by opening a power-up chest.

Yeah, I had that happen when I opened the chest that was in that very house.

This is a super minor thing that probably shouldn't bother me at all, but I always get kind of irritated when reviews call Cave Story '8-bit' when it clearly falls into the next generation in terms of graphics and game play.

So, for someone who has never played Cave Story before, should i pay for the Wii version, or get it on my computer? Are the faults of the Wii version small enough to still enjoy the benefits?

It sounds like if you switch to old music and lower the sound effects to 1/3 the Wii version is fine (just don't open the map on the outer wall. It's pretty obvious which part that is when you reach it).
Of course, you could always play the PC version and buy the Wii version to support Pixel if you end up enjoying it.

So I got two endings so far, but somehow I managed to miss the level 2 boost, the snake, the nemesis, whatever you trade your blade in for. I guess that also means I missed the best ending. And I explored, too! Let's try a Curly run....

EDIT: This game is soooooo great.

I just made it to the part where I stopped when I was playing the PC version. Curly and I were opening doors and I know there's a boss if I enter the next room, but I haven't tried fighting him yet in the Wii version. I only attempted fighting him a few times on the PC before I got distracted by other games.

I didn't like Cave Story that much

The weapons upgrading was kinda boring and I disliked the Spur intensely when I received it, it's powerful but so....dull

Mostly though I really disliked the jumping

    Wayyyyy too floaty

Anyways I thought the story was pretty good. I liked Curly Brace, and was a little i-i when she...you know

I also checked Tigsource for info about the lawsuit between Nifalis and Nicalis last night and they didn't have anything. Considering threre love of Cave Story and Knytt Stories, I figure if something was going down with the creators of those games, they would be all over it.

Call me a tin-foil-hat-wearing crazy, but I've had a bad feeling about this Nicalis fellow ever since his blog didn't post Cave Story updates for months on end while us fans were left begging for an update. I've only read blog posts and such on the Nicalis-Niffalis conflict, so I can't really cited an unbiased source.

Honestly, I'm gonna hold off on buying Cave Story until I learn more about this character. Seeing that "copyright Nicalis" instead of "copyright Pixel" makes my stomach just feel... wrong.

    Question:

Should I buy Rondo of Blood or Rebirth first? No PSP here and the only Rondo of Blood I played was the SNES one. How do they compare to CV3? I do plan to get both eventually but I'm not sure which one I should buy first.

The primary reason I am upset is because these various small problems confirmed my worst fears: this Nicalis guy is not the best person to be put in charge of porting Cave Story to Wii, for a variety of reasons. I don't know how accurate this article is, but it seems to indicate there is some worry about Nicalis in the indie gaming world.

There is no "Nicalis" guy, it's a group of people. Tyrone Rodriguez is the guy you want to blame, if anyone.

If you're going to dislike someone or something, at least make sure you have the facts right.

Yeah, I eventually got through it after dying at least 15 times.

Just... that boggled my mind and pissed me off how someone could put 4 bosses back-to-back-to-back-to-back, but they weren't that bad once you learn the tricks to fighting them. I just... really disagree with the concept.

and yeah... I agree about Dr. Wily, he usually has just 2-3 forms though and the Master Robots you have to fight in a row aren't that bad since you have the weapon that destroys each of them pretty easily.

Well those fights are the whole thing that make it hard, the level itself is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

    Update is out
Some of the issues addressed are:
    • Menu screen cleaned up: No longer "glitchy rotating selection" and instead a more tradtional 2D layout as expected.
    • Extra Modes are now locked until conditions fullfilled.
    • Remixed music significantly improved. (Drumbeats make a huge difference!)
    • Sound mixing fixed. Raining EXP drops are no longer deafening to the ears.
    • Map screen no longer covers the entire screen with black. Instead it overlays the map on top of the play.
    • Script: "Examinate further" has been corrected to "Examine further"
    • Transparent menu and home button screens
    • Gamecube controller support
    • Improved original music
    • Outer Wall crash fixed

I have a question. I'm in an ongoing discussion with Dan Remar, and I'm curious about how well the game actually did. As far as I know, the other indie games like La Mulana and Spelunky haven't made the transfer yet, right?

La Mulana appears to have suffered a delay:
LA-MULANA has returned from Nintendo after the lot inspection.
After that we are debugging without a break.

But, we have a tough time of fixing the part of buying and reading download contents.
It takes long time beyond our expectation.

We did a lot of thinking.
As a result, we come to the conclusion we abandoned to release it in 2010.
Because, it’s better to enhance the completeness instead of completing it roughly in a hurry.

    We are so sorry.

I didn't think the delay was due to poor sales; I was just confirming that the other two games couldn't provide results at this point. So we don't know objectively how Cave Story did? Actually, how do you get the sales numbers on indie games in the first place? I assume things like Braid and Limbo were hits, but I have no idea if that's true or by how much.

Very interesting news: NIS America has announced they'll be teaming up with Pixel for a full, completely redone 3DS remake of Cave Story. Holy crap, just imagine what they'll do with this one - keep the general Pixel art style and apply it to new upgraded sprites, like with Disgaea 4?
