So much dust!

My house is, for some unknown reason, incredibly dusty. I'm talking levels of dust like you see in a movie, when they crack open the door to an ancient house and the beam of light penetrating the darkness reveals clouds of dust motes swirling around the dead air.

Okay, maybe not that bad, but there is a lot of dust, and stuff gets dusty really quick. Then if I do something that stirs it up, I tend to sneeze. Really annoying.

So my question being, does anyone know of something that can help keep the dust levels down? Something like one of those dehumidifiers, but for dust removal maybe?

hepa filter on your central air if you have it, plus regular dusting with a moist cloth.

Check your windows and doors to make sure they are sealing properly. Other than that, dust. I live on the edge of town and whenever the field next to my house is plowed some serious cleaning has to follow.

If you have central air/forced air heating, buy 3M Filtrete air filters and change them every 3 months. They're expensive, but the first time you change it and see how much crap it filters out you'll realize its worth it. The cheap blue fiberglass filters that people use are worthless.

Steam clean your carpets. You walking around is kicking up tons of dust that's settling on your floor.

Alternative, more extreme option: replace your carpeting with wood floors. Much easier to get dust off wood flooring than carpeting.

My central air system uses some weird kind of metal mesh and static electricity filer system, as is my understanding anyway. But it does seem to work, plenty of crap on it when I clean it.

Good call on the carpets, I can't recall the last time I did more than a plain vaccuum on them.

A better vacuum might help too if yours sucks. I just got a Dyson, and it was frankly disgusting how much crap it pulled out of my rugs that my old one didn't.

This. Spend a good $2-300 on a nice vacuum, not one of the $50 pieces of shit.

And really, if you have a lot of dust, you just have to dust. My wife and I dust and vacuum twice a week, and it's still not enough. We live across the street from a big dirt parking lot, and we have 4 cats. Nothing we do fixes the dust. :P

How often do you clean? How thorough are you?

Fully vaccuum one a week, going over dirty areas (say, the kitchen, more than that) and its a central vac system, not saying its good, but at least it doesn't exhaust into the house!

Generally I dust twice a week, more than that on things that show it easier like all the black cased electronics.
