It's quite possible that I'm just the last one boarding this train, but if you haven't played Altitude, you should get it as soon as possible and play with us!
What is Altitude?
Altitude is a 2-D aerial combat game, in which you face off against bots and/or human opponents in giant dogfighting battles.
You can participate in a variety of game modes, both team and FFA, and each one requiring a different set of talents and skills in order to master.
You have a set of five planes to choose from, each of them with a varying set of possible weapons that completely changes the way you use the plane in combat.
As you move up in ranks via kills and "challenges", you gain access to more weaponry (each with its own advantages and drawbacks).
(
Much of the text below is grabbed from the Altitude Games Wiki for your reference... go there for more information!)
What types of game modes are there?
You can participate in a variety of team and individual games ranging from:
*
TBD (Team Base Destruction) - a game type that revolves around teamwork in order to destroy the opposing team's base in order to win. Each team has a base which they have to protect from the other team while at the same time destroying the other team's base. In order to inflict damage upon the enemy base a player must carry the bomb item and use it to hit the enemy base.
*
FFA (Free For All) - a type of round in which every player competes against the other players. The primary goal is to get the most kills before the round ends.
*
TDM (Team Death Match) - a game mode similar to FFA but with teams. The goal for each team is to kill the opposing team and stay alive. The number of kills that each player makes is added to the total of their team's kills which includes all the kills made by the team. The game ends when either a team reaches the score limit or a timer runs out.
*
BALL (Plane Ball) - a game type played by two teams of planes. The objective is to score a goal by shooting or carrying the ball into the opponents' goal, while also protecting your own team's goal from the ball. You can carry the ball by picking it up (touching it with your plane), pass the ball to other teammates or to open spaces (press the 's' key), or shoot (press the 's' key).
*
1DE (1-Life Demolition) - a game mode very different from the others and requires a significant amount of strategy. A game is composed of two teams, the Defenders and the Infiltrators. The Defenders have two bases located in different parts of the maps. The Defenders have to defend their two bases from the Infiltrators. On the other hand, the Infiltrators will have to find a way to infiltrate past the Defenders in order to plant a Demolition Charge by landing in any of the two bases. (I find this to be very similar to Counterstrike, and possibly this is what they intended it to be)
*
1DM (1-Life Death Match) - very similar to TDM. The difference is that each player in a team has only one life per game.
*
1BD (1-Life Team Base Destruction) - a game mode that resembles a hybridization of TBD and 1DM. Just like in TBD, each team has a base that they must protect from opposing team and at the same time destroy opposing team's base to win. One of the differences in this game mode is that each player in both teams have only one life per game. If all players in a team are killed, then the opposing team wins for that round.
What kinds of weapons and planes are at my disposal?* Loopy
Loopy is a fast but poorly armored ship that shoots a variety of homing missiles.
* Bomber
Bomber is a slow, well armored ship that launches similarly slow but devistating attacks.
* Explodet
Explodet is very slow, but the most heavily armored. It has interesting "effect" attacks such as landmines and concussion missiles.
* Biplane
The Biplane is a brutal close combat dogfighter.
* Miranda
Uses energy for a chargeable weapon and to teleport around the map.
What else should I know?
You'll never suffer for want of a new map to play: there's dozens of maps for each mode in the game, and the game comes with a map editor to make more.
There's a ranking and "level" system that gives you rewards as you progress and gives you a firm indicator of your comparative status among your peers.
There's dozens of potential customized weapon/item choices, powerups you can find in the game, and other modifiers that always makes the game interesting.
In short, this game is fun. A lot of fun.

I don't know how this game only got a 78 Metascore. Granted, 78 really is pretty good: but I'd have figured it in the 80's or 90's even personally for its replayability and outright fun factor. To me, the game's more than just "pretty good", it's the best ten bucks I've spent this year.
[edit]
Oh, look at that. It worked. Okay, I'll play some.. Used to absolutely love Subspace/Continuum. Which this is. Except minus the TW rules, which were my favorite, but hey. Can't win 'em all.
Anywho.. SteamID - Xaviar21
[edit again]
Nope. Doing it again. Maybe it only works once per restart..
EDIT: OOoooh, I just looked up Subspace Continuum... I'd never heard of that before, it looks awesome though! You should do a Game On! on that or a Let's Play, because it looks like a freakin' awesome game in its own right... and definitely not one that I think many people may have heard of. (Though it's possible that I've just been living under a rock )
it's pretty intense. I liked it.
How would we meet to play it together?
As far as how we should meet up to actually play together, that's a good question. When I get back from PAX East I can start up a server, but I'm going to be gone for most of this week... I think I picked a terrible time to start this.
Well, when I get back I'll make a PA only server so we don't have to play with people who say/do stupid stuff... that's one thing I don't like about the public games, there's a lot of rude people in them. I don't mind a little rudeness, but when you sit in a game as a spectator just to heckle people, you've got to get a hobby or something!
And yeah, if the community is the same, they don't take very well too new people and can be kind of rude.
They really *are* rude though, it's unfortunate. But that's okay, that's why we do Game On's! We'll launch our own private server, with blackjack and hookers! Er...

Yeah it was quite some time ago, must have been almost ten years. Heard about it through Fargo over at gamespy, back before it merged with ign, who used to make planetfargo and the daily victim if anyone remembers either.
Poor community, but yes it is a good game. I spent a lot of time on the old version despite it being filled with obnoxious immature silly geese. If I had the money to spend, I'd get it to join in with you guys. If anyone is on the fence, it's surprisingly addictive for such simple gameplay. Hope you guys are able to get enough people to have your own server running!

Plane Ball is way more fun than it has any right to be.
Everyone should give the free week-end a shot. And otherwise, I think the demo is the same as full game except you can't go higher than level X and only use the loopy plane.
The one problem I have with it so far that it's taking too long to unlock new stuff to play with.

It very much is.
