I'm immune to coffee and I need something to keep me up. I realized it today when I had 4 cups of coffee and 2 shots of espresso and I still fell asleep (this was in a 4 hour window). How long would it hypothetically take to "detox" from coffee? Has anyone actually tried? I attempted it during winter break but it didn't even seem to impact me at all and I'm right back to drinking too many cups to get what I need. I don't want to resort to using 5 hour energy drinks EVERY night to study. I've heard that tea has a different isomer/chemical composition of caffeine so that's what my temporary plan b seems to be, unless there's some other methods.
Also - No, getting more sleep isn't an option right now, unfortunately.
I was in the same boat in December. I started drinking Rockstar Energy Punch and holy shit. There's something in there... it's like fucking rocket fuel. I was good for 8 hrs of solid work, the I'd crash hard.
That's the magic of the Rockstar Energy Punch, it has 150 mg of caffeine. There's something terrifyingly unhealthy in there that just jacks you up for 8 hrs.

I had 2 of those Rockstars in one day 2 weeks ago and almost passed out that evening. I was literally shaking and I may have grayed out for a second. So, they will hype you up for a specified amount of time BUT the crash is HARD.
And your body is just used to caffeine, the only way to make it not used to it anymore is to quit. How long you have to quit for depends on your body really.

I should clarify, if you want to reduce caffeine intake, but still get some boost, tea is a good alternative. If you're looking for something to deliver the same amount of caffeine, well, you'd have to drink twice as much tea as you do coffee.
How do you eat? Do you have a few large meals per day or several small ones? Do you eat/drink lots of sugar? Do you get regular exercise? I know I'm not directly addressing your coffee issue here but if you require that much caffeine to get things done you may need to work on fixing your metabolism.
If you're not interested in your physical health and dead set on results, then trying to detox and cut caffeine most likely won't help and simply will hurt like hell.
For me quitting caffeine was almost as bad as stopping cigarettes. But for what you're looking for, I still feel just as little from caffeine these days as I did drinking multiple cups of coffee and sodas per day.
Some other options are:
- Drinking 2 + rockstars, as others have mentioned. These are pretty tasty and compared to the other energy drinks seem to give the most bang for the buck.
- Drinking half of a 5 hr energy and saving the rest for later. These literally give me the shakes I got so pumped up drinking them.
- Scoring some adderall from a friend. For someone without ADD, the clean focus feels great and can keep me running for multiple hours.
-Tea bags and water. Simply dunk the tea bag in a water bottle for ~ 30 seconds or so and all the caffeine will dissolve into the water with none of the flavoring. This is more an alternative to coffee rather than an increase in performance.
I would seriously consider taking the advice about diet and exercise though. It sounds like you're stretched for time and most likely stressed with classes, but if you don't take care of yourself and keep pumping up with sugar and chemicals, it'll bite you in the ass. Working in even some mild cardio did wonders for my energy and it's really noticeable when I slack off from running.
Or you could just say screw it, go the illegal way, and stay up for days on end.
j/k, don't start doing coke to study for exams. It'll fuck you and your wallet up.
Wow, reading this thread really makes me realize how weird it is that I can drink a pot of coffee, or 4-5 energy drinks, in a few hours and not feel any "boost" of energy, nor crash, and fall asleep at any point.

While very very true, be careful. Speaking from experience, if you are taking Adderall/Concerta/etc and not prescribed it (or don't have legitimate ADD/ADHD), DO NOT take a study break. It sounds counter productive but two things:
1) You won't feel the need to. You'll start studying and next thing you know you've read your text book, your notes, and any handouts six times.
2) If you get distracted you will stay distracted. It helps you focus amazingly, but some people find that even the littlest distraction can lead to hours of counterproductivity.
3) Some people do not find it a crisp clean focus. I know several people that get very jittery and fidgety. They still study like mofo's but they will not stop bouncing for the duration of it.

If you're drinking coffee, switching to Tea is unlikely to help you. Tea has much less caffeine.
