Headset Search Help

Hello H/A,

While vacuuming the other day I accidentally caught the wires of my headset in the vacuum and the cord was neatly cut so I need some advice on finding a new headset. I'm looking for something with a mic that also has comfortable ear pieces with decent sound quality.

I'm not trying to break the bank on this, but could probably hit the hundred dollar range or there abouts. Feel free to suggest more expensive items though, as I'm kind of to the point where I'd like to get something really nice for a change instead of settling for "just another headset".

I wear glasses so I've got those sitting on my ears as well, if that makes a difference on any recommendations.

    Steel series Siberia

Comfortable, good sound, good mic. Pretty sturdy too. I don't know if these fall under "really nice" but they are very functional headphones for computer use. The only headset I've owned that was more comfortable was my Sennheiser HD 515, but those don't come with a mic.

I see Sennheiser has made a "professional gaming" headset. It's kinda ugly, but it's probably a good product. Sennheiser PC 350

How any of these are changed by wearing glasses, I have no idea.

    I've got a Microsoft LifeChat LX-2000

It's "just another headset", but it's got a great design for working with glasses, and the sound quality is pretty solid on both the mic and phones.

I just ordered this on Sunday night when I found that my old headset had sections of exposed wire on it. I dunno if it's going to be spectacular or not, I just wanted something that functions but I can tell you what it's like once it comes in the mail. I like logitech keyboards and mice so I figured why not?

This is what I was using before, it's probably 2 or 3 years old. People complained I was quiet but I don't speak very loudly anyways, and the walls at my house are unfortunately thin. The headset itself has better audio quality than my speakers but my speakers are more like 6 or 7 years old and they're pretty basic too.

I have the glasses pushing against my head problem too. Usually the temple area. What I do is measure where I wear my headset and cut out that part of the ear cup where the glasses make contact so it doesn't push against them. You can give this a try on your old set to see if it works for you.

    I also second the Siberia's.

This is why I love H/A! I had your same dilemma about a week ago.

I wanted to pick up the Astro set up (headset + mixamp).
    http://www.astrogaming.com/products/25/A40-Audio-Systems/

But pretty much most gaming headsets have less than stellar audio quality when compared to good headphones, and I was looking for something that would excel at both gaming and music. The Astros do sound great (and the mixamp is pretty much the only thing of its kind), but they still don't compare to decent audiophile headphones (which can be had starting around $100).

Enter this dude: http://headphonemicmods.com/ There was a thread on MLG forums talking about modding good quality headphones with mics using clean looking tape/velcro solutions as an alternative to gaming headsets, and that guy shows off his own mod, which is basically a professional looking installation of a boom mic right into the headphone cup. Well he started taking orders from people who wanted the same thing, and it seems to be getting pretty popular. He is currently working on a pair of Sennheiser HD555 for me right now. He even does custom paint and cable work for your headphones too, and at a really decent price. Check out his work.

Btw if you do go this route, I basically found that the the AD700s from Audio Technica and the Sennheiser HD 555 are really popular at the $100 price point for audiophile headphones, and both are considered to have much better sound quality in general when compared to gaming headsets.

Edit: I personally went with the HD 555s because they have more bass than the AD700s, and because they use the same exact drivers as the HD595s, a more expensive model. The only difference is that the HD 555s have a foam block in each cup to change the sound a bit, but they can be easily removed thus giving you a more expensive pair of headphones. 8-)

Edit^2: I think he is selling premodded new AD700s now, as well.

Well, my car has decided to get angry and eat some money so I had to scale back the budget a bit. Picked up the MS Lifechat that Robman suggested. Definitely comfortable and works well so far. Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions.

This is the headset I have. In fact, its the headset I had before (it's cords got eaten by a vacuum) as well.

Its cheapo, but its pretty much the most comfortable multi-hour headset I've owned. Sound, recording whatnot obviously isn't great, but considering I use it for WoW/Ventrilo, comfort is the most important thing.
