The Virtual Piano Thread

Virtual piano is a piano that is virtual. On the internet!

It works by substituting the keys of your keyboard for the different notes, 1 being the lowest and M the highest. Sharps and flats can be achieved using the shift key (for example, P is sharp of p). Ctrl toggles sustained notes on and off. There's also a menu with some more information, features and sheet music.

And you can do things like this:
% * 0 % * 0 % * 0 % * 0 $ * 0 % * 0 $ * 0 % * 0 6 * 0 6 * 0 6 9 Q 6 9 Q $ 8 Q $ * 0 $ * ( $ 8 ( 3 $ * $ * 0 $ * 0 $W *-0 W-$W ( Q $ ( Q $ ( Q $W (-Q W-$W * 0 $ * 0 6$ * Q 6 * Q $W 7 0 $ 7 0 6Q 7 ( 6r 7 ( $0 7 0 $ 7 0 $ 7 0 $ 7 0 5 7 0 5 7 0 5 7

in this case, extraordinary being a rather mundane piano with an obtuse interface?

    are you prepared?

I'm more poking fun at their tagline then the concept

it's a decent website, I'm just crap at music

but I find it hilarious that they bill it by saying "Are you prepared for the extraordinary?"

    I can.

EDIT: Hm, not if they involve a combination of sharps/flat and natural notes.

This is redeemd by the fact that I now realize you can (durrr) copy and paste a string of letters into your address bar and basically be able to play a song with 0 practice due to the ability to simply TYPE

This is kind of funny because whenever I'm teaching someone how to play an instrument and they're getting fed up, I remind them how easily and quickly they can type at rapid speed without thinking...and if they can do that...there's no reason they can't do it on an instrument.

    This is pretty much that.

The Harry Potter theme is relatively easy to play and sounds very good. Not that any of these are particularly difficult, but they do require you to use a lot of symbols and weird typing patterns that your hands really aren't accustomed to making when typing.

This is pretty fun, plus having the X-files theme is always a good time (for me)! I just need to work out how to properly space out the notes(?) so it sounds like music and not a strange collection of sounds

Now all they need to do is have a scrolling set of letters you gotta push, a scoring system, and some achievements and we'll have Piano Hero and it'll sell 12 billion copies.

Even though you're being facetious, you are on to something. A full-sized piano would be too difficult of a peripheral to master, but if it were mapped to a keyboard like this...hmmm...

A Piano Hero game would actually be useful to teach piano if done on a full sized keyboard.

Put that reward section of the brain to good use with pretty colors and a soothing voice shouting "High score! Perfect!" and such.
