Trillian is cherrypicking my messages

I've used Trillian for quite some time now and it's been great. Compact, fast, all that good stuff. Unfortunately there's some bad stuff as well, which I'm beginning to find out. Recently, it's been "throwing out" certain of my messages for no apparent reason. It's done it a couple of times before, so I figured it was time to come and ask around teh interweb for advice. Does anybody have any idea why it would be doing this? Right now I'm using the default AIM client - please don't make me use it much longer!

I don't use Trillian and thus can't help you, but to clarify for others, is it throwing out incoming or outgoing messages, or both?

I don't know the solution to your problem, but you can try Miranda IM as a replacement - it uses plugins to connect to most IM protocols. Also totally free.

The bad thing is that it's not very pretty by default, though it's possible to make it look nice with some plugins. There was a guide to doing that in G&T some time ago, though I think it was copied from some other site, so you might find it on the internets if not here; it was a fairly complicated process.

edit: nice sig up there, Smasher

Is there a common trait in the discarded messages? Because I know with msn it will throw out messages that contain 'download.php' anywhere in the body.

Smasher, et al: It's only been losing outgoing messages so far as I know, not both.

robaal: Miranda definitely looks promising. If the Trillian problem isn't resolved, I'll probably give it a shot.

Vindicta_: Nope, it seems pretty random to me. Nothing that would be called similar.

Another thing it's been doing, is telling my my friends are typing when actually they're not. Again, this only happens every once in a while, but is still annoying.

What happens if you try to send the same message after it was rejected? What I'm getting at here is , is this just happening randomly or is there something in the message that trillian doesn't like? How exactly do you know its not going through? Getting an error message or do you just not get a response from your friends when you say something to them?

Well, I've never tried sending the same thing twice, so I'm not really sure. But like I said before, I don't think there's anything in the messages that it doesn't like. I know because either a) they don't respond, or b) I ask them if they got it.

It's possible your computer is somehow sporadically losing its connection without trillian becoming aware of it. Are you doing anything else on the internet when these things happen? If you are, you could check to see if that still works when the problem occurs.

    t robaal: heh, thanks.

Sometimes trillian gives me hell; but it seems specific to trying to send someone using the original chat clients a hyperlink. I generally cut off the "http://www." part to make it non-clickable, and it'll go through... though it means a little more effort on the part of my e-bitch to see what i'm talking about.

I haven't has as many problems since going pro, though.

Well your supposed to pay for it. Guess you acquired it through other means.

I downloaded the demo a month or so back but it kept crashing.

Well, I've tried a reinstall and so far things are working fine. Thanks for the advice everyone! I know it was a pretty unanswerable question, but the help is appreciated!

Not a fan of cryptography, I take it?

With regards to the OP, I had similar problems with Trillian. I switched to GAIM, and it seems to work fine. Most of my friends still use Trillian, and swear by it, though...it may have just been a peculiarity of my machine.
