My Dell XPS Gen 4 was very good to me, up until the point the motherboard crapped out. At that point (a few months ago), I decided to do some shopping for a combo computer/monitor deal. I ended up settling on the HP Pavilion Elite HPE-150 with a 23" HP w2338h HD monitor. Everything looks great browsing the web, and I installed a few games to check the speed of the computer. Those games were HL2:Ep2 and Team Fortress 2. Both ran at high-ish settings (max resolution, high detail, ect.) with a great frame rate.
Fast-forward to now: the newer games I've been installing haven't been running that smooth at all. For example, I installed Heroes of Newerth. I played it for a while on my older computer, and it ran BETTER on my 5-year old XPS than it does on this machine. The Just Cause 2 demo looked pretty fun, so I installed that today. I have system specs well above the recommended, yet I have to set all the graphical settings to off/lowest AND the resolution to lower than 1080x720 to get 30 fps.
The question: has anyone here had this problem with HP's HPE series? My system specs are below, and I suspect this could be a problem of shitty drivers for ATI right now on Windows 7.

Ok, I ran DxDiag...lo and behold it says my Approx. Total Memory is 3570 MB (should be 5120 MB right?). I'm talking to HP right now, and they say I have the right stuff in the computer as ordered and shipped. Does running Windows 7 64-Bit cause you to LOSE megs off your graphics card, or did someone at the factory put the wrong part into my computer?

Fast-forward to now: the newer games I've been installing haven't been running that smooth at all. For example, I installed Heroes of Newerth. I played it for a while on my older computer, and it ran BETTER on my 5-year old XPS than it does on this machine. The Just Cause 2 demo looked pretty fun, so I installed that today. I have system specs well above the recommended, yet I have to set all the graphical settings to off/lowest AND the resolution to lower than 1080x720 to get 30 fps.
The question: has anyone here had this problem with HP's HPE series? My system specs are below, and I suspect this could be a problem of shitty drivers for ATI right now on Windows 7.

Ok, I ran DxDiag...lo and behold it says my Approx. Total Memory is 3570 MB (should be 5120 MB right?). I'm talking to HP right now, and they say I have the right stuff in the computer as ordered and shipped. Does running Windows 7 64-Bit cause you to LOSE megs off your graphics card, or did someone at the factory put the wrong part into my computer?

It should be 512 MB, not 5120 MB. Apparently it's using spare system memory to supplement the onboard memory, similar to how integrated video cards work.
It's not just the memory that affects a video card's performance, it's the clock speed, architecture, etc.
Fortunatly, I forgot a tiny detail: I have a perfectly good 8600 GT (made by BFG too!) sitting in my old computer! I'm probably going to swap that into my working PC, which should solve that problem. Mods can lock this, its not as much the crappy windows 7 drivers as much as it is an underpowered video card.

I have an ATI 4870 with Win 7 and the drivers run just fine for me, everything i run i can run at ultra settings without a hitch so it definitely isn't a driver issue.
Also an 8600 wont run really modern games either.
I seriously would recommend a 4870 though, you can get them for $200 or under depending on the make and they out-perform the newer 5770 and below cards by a reasonable margin and cost a significant amount less. Even the $150 version of 4870 outperforms them by a good amount.
