Bike Question: Quick release on the rear wheel.

I've just recently got a cycle trainer, and i thought that i have a quick release on the rear wheel but i don't, just the standard nuts. The cycle trainer came with a quick-release skewer to fit it's mounting system, so my questions are;
1. Am i correct in thinking that this isn't a direct swap out?
2. What do i need to buy to convert it over, is there a conversion kit, or is it a whole new wheel (i presume this is easier than a new hub)?
anything else i should know?
