Zombie Makeup: what wounds? (and other tips, If you've got them)

For a little while now, I've been dabbling in zombie/general makeup effects. I've attempted a few different applications now - from the more standard fare of cuts, scratches and bite marks to gouged eyes and infectious growths - with varying degrees of success.

Anyways, I've got a zombie march this coming Saturday. I like to try something different every time I join the legions of the undead, but I'm kind of running out of ideas. I'm looking for some suggestions for some interesting wounds I can try to replicate, as well as general makeup-effects advice if there's anyone out there who knows anything about this.

Materials I have include liquid latex, fake blood (a dark gelatin kind which is particularly good for deep wounds, and appears to stay wet even when dry) and several colours of costume makeup. (Here are a few of the previous costumes I've done, if that's any help.)

Mushrooms. Nothing makes a zombie look even worse then a nice colony of fungus.

Before following any advice, opinions, or thoughts I may have expressed in the above post, be warned: I found Keven Costners "Waterworld" to be a very entertaining film.

i cant attach the pictures right now, but for a base exercise, i got make-up done to be a burn victim with half of my face burned and nastified. The guy doing my make-up used liquid latex on the side he wanted to be burned. Once the latex dried, he put the palm of his hand on my face and pulled down on the latex (its going to hurt) to make it look like the burned skin was sliding off my face and then he used the colors (red, black, orange, yellows). Im sure you could apply the same thing to a zombie, just add more dark and drab colors instead of all the red.

The first thing I noticed in that first pic is your hair is way too... alive.

Bloody/dirty up your hair some to complete whatever look you go with.

Here's my attempt from a while back:
    DSC00050.jpg

I took some old clothes and cut them up, roughed the edges, and kicked them around in the dirt. People say the best thing to do is bury them for a few weeks in the soil, and then dig them up and wear them for that authentic look.

Make up wise - you can see I went for a wound on my chest with the thick blood, and let it set. I was quite happy with the makeup, although it looked better later on in the night when it had faded some.

These are great points guys. I love the idea of using mushrooms/fungus, but I'm not sure how I'd pull it off effectively just yet.

A dude I know, though I wouldn't call him a friend, nor even acquaintance, is part of the group of guys who runs this site.

They make zombie killing swords, and in their gallery section the "Zombies and the girls who love to kill them" section has some good zombies. They go with a mix of "over the top" and "subtle, new zombie" approach that I like. Not every zombie is totally torn apart and falling apart, and they do a decent job IMO. Maybe you can get some ideas from them.

Whether they find a life there or not, I think Jupiter should be called an enemy planet.
