So I have one of those trendy Flip cameras (how do they market those in the Phillipines? anyway...) and I can get the footage from the camera to my laptop just fine. However, it only seems to be possible to save it as an MP4, which won't open in windows movie maker (it crashes when I try). I need to cut this video down, it's 20 minutes long right now. Is there alternative software I can use or a simple solution to my problem? Thanks guys.
I believe, technically, you could also acquire Quicktime Pro for 30 dollars and convert the MP4 to an AVI which Windows Movie Maker would then support. (QT Pro also does basic video cut/paste stuff).
But Vegas can probably both convert and edit for you.
If you're looking to edit look for free versions of Avid. I don't think they're supported anymore by the actual company but it's still great software. Windows Movie Maker is also an ok alternative.
I don't know what your aim is, but both of those alternatives sound good if you know your way around editing/editing software. If you're just trying to trim some parts out of a 20 min youtube video, there's no reason to go searching for AVID or Vegas. I'd say converting and sticking with WMM is probably a decent idea.
Thanks for the help guys! I have another question; I have a recording on a DVD that I burned to my computer (I own the copyright, there's no legal issue) and I'd like to edit this one in a similar way. All the DVD files are VOBs and things, how do I get that into a format I can easily edit?

Can't vouch for this software but it seems like a safe bet.
I downloaded this, but the trial version will only let me convert five minutes. I don't suppose anyone is aware of a freeware program I can use? I don't convert enough stuff for it to be worth shelling for.

and if you can find a working version of the avidfreedv, you're golden. most of the other free/cheap ones are toys.
if its a quick project, you can try downloading the trial version of premiere. its good for 30 days.
