To further what Adus said about Army of One, I'm finding it extremely useful on launched enemies, as she keeps them airborne for far longer, meaning they'll remain unable to attack until Fang decides to spike them back down to the ground. It also seems to boost the gauge by about 200-300%, so when the other two do attack, it's for a lot of damage.
Relating to this, spoilers for Chapter 12:
By the time the first stagger on Proudclad ran out, it was down to 25-30% health, thanks to Army of One ramping the gauge up to 999.9%. I think Fang was doing about 45000 damage per hit at this point.

until i remember that this would be the worst idea in the world
I didn't find FF XII fun at all until I took about 20 months off from it and used one of those "Get insanely strong with 2-3 hours of pure ass grinding at the beginning of the game" guide.
Starting off ahead of the eight ball really suits that game for some reason.

Army of One is also great to use right before the Stagger ends. Even though the bar will run out right after the attack starts, the enemy will still be staggered, and the stagger bonus will keep increasing, until Army of One ends.
There's a bloody big adamtortoise (or however it's spelt) that one hit kills my entire squad that if you leave it alone and go ahead there are two of those spherical item dispenser things, if I open one the thingy comes along and falls through the glass floor getting rid of both dispensers. Is that totally scripted? If I grind my people up and kill the thingy (somehow) before I touch the dispensers will I be able to get both?

Question on Neochu, what level were most you when you beat him? I've managed to kill him, but I get ripped apart the Picochu's.
I killed him as soon as I was able to get the mission (after Ch. 11's boss). Granted I think I had my crystarium as far along as it would go at that point, or at least close. The Minichu's are definitely not to be underestimated and I almost died to them myself. I don't really have any advice on the matter since I can't quite remember what I did other than use a summon when I thought I was in trouble.
So maybe level up a bit more if you're not maxed yet.
I juuuuust got to Chapter 11. Should I start leveling up now? Do I really have that crap-huge map?
If you want. It might make the end boss and the next couple chapters run a bit smoother. I can see them being pretty nasty going in underleveled, but not impossible.

yes
good luck with that, though
if you want the achievement, then only one of the chests holds a unique item
I'm not sure that's true. No item can be missed forever unless you disassemble or sell something that has an upgrade you can't get anywhere else.
So never sell or disassemble equipment unless you know what you're doing and you should always be in the running to get the achievement, even if you missed chests.

Also, for those having trouble with Neochu, I just beat it with a party set-up of Vanille (SAB, obviously), Lightning (MED) and Snow (SEN). I originally tried with Vanille, Lightning and Fang, but I found that the extra HP on Snow REALLY helps. And there's luck involved not only with getting Death to work, but also getting all the Pichochu provoked onto Snow before they massacre Vanille or Lightning.
After Death landed, I switched to a MED/SEN/COM team and had Vanille alternate between curing Snow and casting Quake. You might want to save 2 or 3 TP to cast Renew or Summon in case things really go south and find yourself in need of a "reset button."
Does equipping multiple survival manuals do anything?
How about upgrading them.
You can only get >1< in the entire game (I'm assuming you mean Survival Catalog), dont upgrade it.
Its upgraded form is Collectors Catalog and you get like 2-3 of those, where you should upgrade one of them to a Connoseir Catalog (rare drop+) the same catalog wont stack if you equip more of them, but you can equip one of each.
Contrary to popular belief, nothing can be disassembled into a Survival Catalog, same with Gold Watch. (But Gold Watch can be upgraded to a Survival Catalog, but Gold Watch is arguably the most difficult item to aquire in the game, so thats a waste)
So I beat the chapter 9 boss. The trick is not give a fuck about your health and to just keep beating on his ass. Unfortunately I had to wait for the death timer to appear over Lightning for that to sink in.
I recently unlocked Rank 9 in the Crystarium and got everyone's unique abilities, but I'm not really sure when I should use them.
For example, Lightning's "Army of One" supposedly gives a chain bonus that "varies by situation," but I'm not really sure what that means. Do I use it when an opponent's staggered to increase the chain percentage during the stagger? Or do I use it to get an opponent to stagger faster?
Basically, the descriptions for almost all of the unique abilities are a little too vague for me to figure out when I should use them instead of my normal abilities. And it doesn't help that I haven't seen the AI choose Fang or Hope's specials, and Auto-Attack never chooses Lightning's.
What you do with Lightning's move is two things.
When your opponent is *not* staggered, you spam Army of One and do paradigm shifts to Evened Odds to get in a haste or two along with a few debuffs for easy murdering of opponents. You can shift as soon as the animation starts, and get off two hastes by the time it ends, with just enough room to shift back to your attack paradigm (I use Relentless Assault).
When your opponent *is* staggered, you use it to build the meter ridiculously fast (even faster if you have the Lionheart line of weapons), and I believe you can even force them to stay staggered while the animation is happening if you use it right as they're about to reset. I've killed more than a few enemies far faster than was intended this way.
This has probably been said before, but the most frustrating thing for me about battles is that physical position is relevant to group attacks (especially when using a SEN to ostensibly protect your party) but uncontrollable.

On a vaguely related note, Lightning at least cannot attack certain larger enemies when they're facing away from her, she just swings and misses, which can be very annoying.
Also, I loaded up my game this morning and found two save files. Curious, I asked my wife what the second was, and she said she had started a game!
yay!
Gold Watch is the reward for beating the last Ci'eth mission (64) it basicly just makes it easier to get 5 stars (prolongs time needed for 5 stars)
If I were you, I'd keep more than one save per game, I havent experienced JRPG saves getting corrupted on Xbox360, but I have tried it on Fallout 3, so now I basicly have like 10 saves per game where I overwrite the oldest, just in case.
Gold Watch is almost necessary to go back and 5 star some missions after you're too powerful for them since the time goes down relative to your stats. Or at least it saves you the trouble from having to use shrouds for each one.

I definitely might now that my wife is playing, I don't want either of us to accidentally over-write one of the save files.
And can you go back and re-do missions to get a better score? I've only done a couple so far...
That entire last chapter... hell if I know what I was looking at. I wouldn't say it was so weird as to be completely incomprehensible, but it did reinforce one of my opinions about the game. That they're cranking up the fantasy aspect so high, that I no longer understand what's going on. Sort of like the uncanny valley, but for story and setting.
Still though, neato ending. Nice little mind screw with the logo too.
With everything all said and done now, this Final Fantasy for me has been exactly like every other one I've played. It has its ups and downs and pros and cons. I can also see and understand the complaints. But I've completely enjoyed it for what it is, and when the end credits are done rolling, I've walked away having played a good game.
Maybe I'll give some of the post game stuff a go. I was all geared up to get all the achievements, but with people saying how much of a bitch it is to get the item lore one, it's kind of killed the mood a bit.

So is there any way to farm Gil in this game other than grinding to max out your CP and then kill giant turtles? By the end of the game I only had maybe two or three peoples beginning weapons maxed T2 and one or two others in T2 sort of mid level. And no accessories leveled at all.
Well you'd be wasting a lot of time maxing your CP then going to the turtles, seeing that with the Growth Egg, they give 80k CP. You can pretty much do it as soon as you have access to Death, though if you're still in the health range where one stomp will kill you, then going into Level 10 to get more HP would be beneficial.
But the short answer is no, there is no better way.

Really?
I dunno why, but I had zero issues with him. I read somewhere about the death counter but never saw that either. I did end up using my summon when he was around 20% health for the free party-heal, and also realized at that point it was impossible to stagger him a second time. I basically sat in Diversity for about 80% of that battle, and when he started charging, switched lightning to heal, fang to debuff, and hope to buff, then switched to a Ravager/Medic/Sentinel role for the charge attack, then right back to diversity until the next charge.
Rinse repeat.
The damn fight took 16 minutes, but I never did see a death counter.

God, that blows. I've maxed out all the main roles for everyone and I'm working on an their alternates, I have a Rod with Debuffing Lvl 2 on it for Vanille, but even then I tried spamming death on those turtles for hours, managed to kill 2 and neither one of them dropped anything. I'm sure I could kill them faster if I had some better / leveled accessories but that brings me back to the fact that I need insane amounts of money to do that. Whoever thought up the post-game for FF13 needs to be kicked in the balls.
That was pretty fucking close. Finished the chapter 9 boss with about 100 on the doom clock and 100 hp on my main dude. Doom is a total dick move on the part of the boss.
Try to get as many high level saboteurs in your party as possible (and switch to a paradigm with them) as I'm fairly sure the Role Level bonuses stack. Plus you may get them to toss on extra debuffs to help your chances if they have the abilities. You also shouldn't bother trying to continue to death the turtles after they stand up as the debuff wipe will just lower your chances and then you'd have to worry about staying alive.
The post game as a whole would be completely fine if there was even one reliable way to make money that didn't just require MMO-style farming. In the brief period I did farm, it felt like I was back in fucking Everquest ten years ago gathering bone chips to sell in East Commons just to make enough money for my Dark Reaver.
