Recovery programs: Which ones actually work?

I recently updated my wife's PC and OS to Windows 7. I dumped what I thought were all of the files she wanted to save on another hard drive and went ahead with the formatting and updating. I also made an XP Professional backup file of her system, just in case. I was apparently smart to do this because it turns out she forgot to tell me that all her digital camera pictures weren't stored with the rest of the files she wanted saved. I have another XP Pro machine that I haven't been using so I wiped it clean in anticipation of using the backup file to so I could pick out the files that she wants saved.

The problem is that the bkf file has apparently become corrupted. Rather than trusting things to Google and some random $20 piece of software that may or may not actually repair or make usable the bkf file I thought I'd see if anyone else has a preferred program for this problem.

Maybe someday, they'll see a hero's just a man. Who knows he's free.

I've used a couple of free ones in the past, but I can't remember which and there's plenty of free ones to choose from, but regardless of which one you try you should clone the drive and only try to recover from the cloned drive.
