My wife won a game at PAX today from the guys at the DustOff booth. We have no idea what the hell it is, but it was calling to us. We -had- to have it. It's in Japanese, and we can't tell if it's a space shooter, or an RTS a la Homeworld. Also, the top and bottom seem like they're in German. Any ideas?

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu is a Space Combat Sim game, developed by Microvision and published by Bandai, which was released in Japan in 2008.

But yes, Legend of the Galactic Heroes

That thread talks about the achievements in the game.

I'm currently enjoying Infinite Space on my DS - space sim/RPG with nice ship customization but fairly simplistic battle mechanics, released in the US a couple of weeks ago. Thread is this way.

Yeah it's Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and it's a space based RTS.

It's actually based off of an old anime series, very long running and very popular. Was never released elsewhere IIRC but there have been fansubs. The Space combat and strategy in the series didn't make a lick of sense, but I really enjoyed it, it had some pretty awesome characters and a good storyline running through the whole thing. Mind you, it's been many years since I got the chance to see it, so I might be remembering with rose tinted glasses.

Aside from all the political and character drama, the series was primarily based around space based combat between two rival nations, and featuring huge fleets of battleships. Which is where the game comes in.

I think it's this game specifically (they specifically mention online play via GFWL).

EDIT: I have no idea how you're going to manage to play this game unless you, you know, know Japanese or something. Maybe there's a fan translation project somewhere out there for it, who knows.

EDIT EDIT: And the German thing? One of the nations if very much "German themed", and all the characters from there have German names and such. IIRC that text is just the name of the series, "Legend of the Galactic Heroes".

Aw man. I shouldn't be surprised they made a game of this. Too bad it's Japanese only.

The series is very much worth your time, and is totally anime-cliche free. I added it to my own personal list.

I have a soft spot for that kind of crazy japanese space warfare. That looks pretty cool.
