AskACapper Quadriplegic Gamer - Custom Button reMapping Petition - 65,500+ C U @ PE?
Update #1 - an dev sent me this
My name is Bostjan Troha, and I am the CEO of a game developer that's currently working on a full-retail PS3/Xbox360/PC action-adventure game. I've noticed your effort to include custom button remapping in games. We'll put that in our game.
But more importantly, please let me know how would you like us to make games even more enjoyable for you. I am sure you have many ideas and solutions, and we'll be happy to implement them in our games, if at all possible.
hello Penny arcade I hope you guys are doing awesome long time no update. My petition and rocking and rolling I'm over 29,000 signatures and going to PAX East to talk to every developer about but in remapping. You guys got any tips for a PAX newbie. Is the Q&A with the boys always on Friday? Thanks the awesome
I support this fully. I myself suffer from a host of disabilities that makes gaming a little difficult for me. I had a damaged tendon in my left wrist that made my left thumb nigh unusable. And i have nerve damage in my right arm, that makes my response time with keys and buttons ( and the mouse ) slow.
If it werent for custom keymapping in games on PC, and using my new 360 controller for PC along with Xpadder...i would never get a game played.
I recently had surgery in january to fix my Tendon in my left wrist. It was a success and im once again learning to use a gamepad. Something that irks me however is that i can not remap sensitive controls like jumping to a trigger or bumper in my 360 games. My right hand is just not responsive enough for jumping like that.
So im in full support of this petition. I believe controls should be more versatile for the sake of playabllity for everyone.
Also, Chuck, you are quite good at Modern Warfare... i suck at that game! Lol.
I don't have any disabilities preventing me from playing games, but I do think there's no reason not to have the ability to change button configs. I know I've certainly yearned for it in the past; you don't need to be disabled to be frustrated with poor button layouts.

DrSwords thanks for sharing it is comments like yours that fuel the fire!
Wow - you sir are awesome. Not just at games, but your outlook on life is also equally impressive. You're the type of guy that's going to develop some sort of gamepad, or new way to play, and its going to rock.
Signed.

So, hopefully this question isn't too stupid, but doesn't quadriplegic mean you can't use any of your limbs? Or have I been mislead this whole time?
Thats a fine question - It denotes impairment in 4 limbs some CAPpers can't move any limbs others can move their fingers and arms to some degree and they still are classified as quads. Impairment in 4 limbs to some degree = quadriplegic!
Thanks for the sigs! please pass them on to friends
While I myself am not a capper I fully support this not only for you but for gaming in general. It seems like it would be very easy to code the ability to remap all of the buttons to whatever layout you wanted rather than be forced to choose from predefined configurations.

Yeah, this is like an actual Important Thing
Like, might want to mail Gabe and/or Tycho about it Important Thing
Yea i believe there should be more support for disabled gamers out there.
For instance... the Ben Heck one handed controller. This was an amazing advancement to me for people with disabilities. People who have limited use of one arm or hand... can play games with the other!
Stuff like this needs more awareness, and more support.
I learned to play games on the computer when i couldnt handle a gamepad anymore. Mouse and keyboard worked for me, cause my slow response time on the mouse wasnt such a chore in MMo's and shooters where i played co op with friends. And even though i barely have use of my left thumb, my four left fingers are in great shape.
I wish there was more support for things like Mouse and Keyboard on consoles. Some people argue that there is an accuracy advantage and crap like that, and never think about the people who have a hard time working analog sticks.
I play a game with friends called Grand Chase. Its a 2d beatem up MMO. I could not play this 4 months ago on a gamepad if i tried to. Thanks to surgery im learning how to now ( as part of regaining the use of my thumb back ), but if this game required me to use one or the other i wouldnt be able to play it. The fact that a lot of pc games allow both... both gamepad and keyboard... is a major boost to me. And the boon of remapping that pc games have always enjoyed is also something that console makers are flagging behind in.
I always remap my keys in any pc game i play.
Heck... Speaking of remapping keys. I was playing Megaman ZX this morning on my DS ( on easy... ) and i learned you can remap the controls in it. A DS GAME!! with remappable controls!
If Capcom can do this on a megaman game why cant big titles like Halo allow for this? Presets are a start, but key for key remapping should be standard by now.
Also. There are a host of diabilities out there. A lot of games dont take into account people who are color blind. Or people who are hard of hearing. I spent my years as a kid mostly deaf before a surgery restored my hearing when i was young. I remember TV being hard to watch cause Closed Captions werent commonplace. And ive always had poor hearing.
Some games, like the Valve made Left 4 Dead series, have subtitles for everything. Including stuff like a hunter sneaking up on you. Stuff like this needs to be commonplace.
I wish there was a more realistic way for developers to include the disabled and impaired. I know that it costs extra money to subtitle a game, or research to make menus and keymapping accessible to all.
If only there were some sort of standardization. Sorta like what Chuck here was getting at. There needs to be a standard set of guidelines and tools for game developers to include the disabled in their plans.
Im rambling, but my point is, Chuck brought up something very important with his petition. There are millions of disabled people out there who like games as much as anyone else. And they have to deal with things that shouldnt be that hard to correct.
Awareness is the first step. The second step is to hold the companies that make these games up to the standard.
Hopefully we can get some awareness out with this.

Videos are pretty interesting, but maybe you could lower the music volume while you are talking
It's really impressive what you accomplish even when the devs didn't implement full remap, you're a real life inspiration. Keep it up!
I say it's about time for something like this. Signed (although I misspelled my first name - how dreadfully embarrassing).
I'm a paraplegic - T5/T6 break so I was very nearly a quad. I'm demolished my left arm over the years: arthritis in my left wrist which severely limit range of motion in that hand, demonstrated lag in reaction time in that arm, and a rotator cuff with three out of four tendons completely ripped in half. And I'm left-handed of course.
For me the remapping is mostly for the benefit of my left-handedness but I do run into problems with racing sims and wheel setups that require gas and brake pedals. Finding a wheel with analog paddles is pretty tough. And my setup for Gran Turismo is unlike anybody else's and thank goodness I can remap it. I drive my actual car with right hand on wheel and left hand on gas/brake so I'm and thankful I can do that in GT.
Control methods should never be a barrier to gaming!
Signed joyfully. Hell, as a fully able gamer, I still want the option to make every game use the same button to jump. Plus, this is a smart and logical request to make and if game developers don't see the potential gain from an audience this addresses, then fie on them, I say.

My girlfriend has limited use in her right arm from a brain injury. Make it nearly impossible for her to do anything that requires two hands. Now I'm gonna get her to play games using her chin too.

Let me know how she does.. it takes a while to learn but she can be come proficient. My buddies try it and fail hard!
Absolutely signed and slightly related is this bit of beta software. It strives to make games including Bioshock 2 playable for people who are colourblind.

color blind is such an easy fix to let the user pick a color... The odd thing is the 7% of males are red green colorblind (myself included) and male are much of the time the target audience for game makers.
Yea i believe there should be more support for disabled gamers out there.
Absolutely, because it could happen to any one of us at any time. I would hate to suddenly lose the ability to enjoy my hobby. And I'm not just talking about crazy accidents; the idea of no longer being good enough for certain games/systems (games that I love to play now) as I get closer to becoming an old man scares the shit out of me. I'm still a spry 28 now, but it's hard not to think about it.

EVERY SINGLE MALE in my family is colorblind but me (thanks, genetics!), and my girlfriend is that freak 1 in 1 bazillion of women who are color blind.
They absolutely LOVE PopCap. PopCap games ALWAYS get around the color blind issues with icons. Peggle, for instance, in color blind mode, has a slight shift in the hue of green, purple and orange (I barely notice it), but puts a very subtile "+" on the green pegs and an upside down triangle on the oranges. My girlfriend says it makes an astounding difference.
Its little things like that, that just elevate companies to god status. Such a simple thing that makes her so, so happy. They made her loyal to them for life.

Unlike most internet petitions, it's a reasonable request.

I feel if the console manufactures eventually build it into the system the devz wont need to code it at all.
