Quick Question about Oral Surgeon fees

Hey guys. I went to my dentist about getting my wisdom teeth removed, he checked it out, I got an x ray done, he gave me some names of excellent oral surgeons he knows that are in the city I now live in (I moved since the dentist visit). I called an oral surgeon today, and I have a consultation with him in a couple week. This is a 20-30 minute meeting where he'll see what needs to be done, and we discuss sedation options and I imagine some other stuff, too. No x rays will be taken, it really is just a poke around my mouth to see if he'll have to break the tooth up, and to make sure I'm up to speed.

This is gonna cost 95 bucks Canadian. I just want to make sure this is normal for just a consultation, or if this guy is pretty overpriced.

Sweet, thanks!

When I had my wisdom teeth out the initial consult and follow-up were both at no extra charge, but I reckon the costs were just built into the fee I paid for the extraction.

That said, $95 for a consult isn't particularly unreasonable. Any time you use a professional's services, it's going to be pricey.

I'm not in Canada but this is what happened with me, too. I think it varies from doctor to doctor.

For the OP: Quite frankly I think you could just as easily do this over the phone...the consult will be shorter than the 20-30 minutes you're thinking, mainly they just want to know if you'd prefer local or general anesthesia. If you say general, the consult is over...they tell you not to eat for 12 hours beforehand and that you'll need someone to drive you home when it's all done.

Yeah, the consult is mandatory, I asked several times if it was necessary, and the receptionist couldn't give me an estimate on one tooth saying it depends on the procedure. I'll call some other offices tomorrow.

That sounds like a good plan. I think most places you'll call will tell you something pretty similar, though...I wouldn't be surprised if the consult is to cover their own butts just in case something goes wrong. It is kind of odd that they were unwilling to give you even a ballpark figure on the cost of the procedure, though.

I'm not sure what your situation is, toothwise, but when I got mine pulled it was an 'emergency' procedure so the consult was right after I met the surgeon who was going to perform the extraction. His words when he looked over my x-rays were something along the lines of 'wow...so are you free tomorrow to get these taken out? I recommend general anesthesia, those suckers are gonna HURT'.
