Westward Aviation Networking Group: PAX Prime 2010 (look HERE if you're flying!)

The Westward Aviation Networking Group (WANG)
Thanks to Goose for name construction

:: :: The Introduction :: ::
The Westward Aviation Networking Group (WANG, name authored by Goose), is the organizing of PAX goers, whose travelling method is flight, on as few planes as possible. Who needs to sit next to someone who can't stop talking to you about toothbrushes, or near a crying baby who screams in your ear? When you can sit next to a fellow PAX attendee! As for routes that are covered in this networking group, nearly every city/town has access to joining this event. Joining WANG is not that difficult, all you have to do is choose a major hub and fly there before the major flight(s) take off. Giving yourself more of a layover with everyone else in your selected major hub will give you a chance to get lunch and converse with your newfound flying friends. So fasten your seatbelt (and make sure your tray table is in upright and lock position), sit back, relax, and take off in this year's Penny Arcade Expo PRIME 2010 - Westward Aviation Networking Group.

:: :: The How-To's :: ::
In order to ensure a smooth transition from connecting flights from smaller cities/towns to major flights bound, nonstop, to Seattle, WA; we ask that you post some information. We must know where you are departing from and when you plan on departing. And a list of major hubs to fly to is listed below. Major hubs are commonly used by airlines as their location where most of their flights come in and out of; for example, one of the major hubs of Delta is Atlanta, GA (note, airlines may have more than one hub). Also, having one preferred airline by all PAX aviators helps, so we can all be on the same plane by the same carrier. If you want to fly with us, post the following:

The plane you're taking: The "PAX Flights" will be given plane names, please lookup the corresponding flight and name, and put it HERE (note: prefix PRE- means departing Wednesday, derived from PREPAX events)!
Your targeted hub city: Where you plan on landing to catch your connecting flight.
Your departing town/city: The city/town airport you plan on departing from.
Connection Arrival Time: When does your plane arrive at your selected hub? Note, timezones correspond to the airport you're arriving in.
Ticket purchased: Y/N
Seat Assignment: If you have purchased your ticket already, please give your seat assignment (row & column letter). Note, suggested seat assignments are given for each PAX Flight, please check your flight and it's PAX Seats before booking!

:: :: No Return :: ::

WANG will only list flights inbound to Seattle on Wednesday, September 1st and Thursday, September 2nd. No outbound flights will be listed due to the fact that the airport will be packed with PAX goers on the last day of PAX and up to 2 days after that. If you can't find an attendee on that Sunday night flying out, then you must be in the basement of the terminal :P. Never-the-less, you are bound to meet-up with many gamers on your way home, don't forget tissues for the trip back (cause it's a sad departure, you're leaving "home" :( ).

I know I know, why the fuck would you FLY instead of driving with the CCST or training with the WCTT (*cough* MOE *cough*). But some people do not have the luxuries of being able to drive or train due to location, time, ability, etc. PAXers are bound to take to the skies no matter how many times you persuade them not too, it's inevitable! Therefore, us suckers are probably forced into randomly selected seats on board a large flight; most likely sitting next to some lady with a crying baby or an uptight businessman. Instead of getting the awkward feeling of sitting next to some un-weird stranger for 3+ hours on a transnational flight, how about sitting next to a weird stranger who's going to PAX: The Penny Arcade Expo PRIME 2010?! With that idea in mind, the coming of this topic was done! Most airlines have introduced the option of seat selection to your reservation booking process, so why not try?

Many conflicting factors may lead to this idea being a major fail, like countless numbers of airliners, countless numbers of flights & times, hundreds of departure points, and thousands of flight combinations. But many of us travel to this one location with one thing always in common, gaming... why not take that idea to the skies and travel together? Need feedback, yes or no (willing to try hard at organizing this)? If yes, possibly a name with a 4-letter acronym suggestion please? Or simply just troll me on how epically phail this idea is and this thread should just burn in a fire (*COUGH* MOE & other jerks *COUGH*).

I'm thinking there's two ways this can be done.

One: Drum up enough support (10+ people). Call up an airline and get a group booking. From what I've been seeing, most airlines will let you change the name on one of the bookings so if someone drops out, you can easily replace them. Then all the people can travel to that airport, meetup, and enjoy the flight over. Example: Book a group of 10 people on a flight from Atlanta. People in the area can then either drive to the airport, or if someone from Miami or something wants to fly to Atlanta and then join up with the group, then they can do that.

Two: People flying simply post in this thread which flight number they are booked on so others could try and match up connecting flights and such. Example would be someone leaving from Las Vegas could post their flight number, and then someone leaving from Atlanta (since every flight I've taken from Atlanta to Seattle seems to stop in Las Vegas) could make sure their connecting flight in Las Vegas is the same.

Both these will probably make the flights more expensive for some people (Number One more so than Two). And with Number Two, you might not get a seat next to a like-minded, but at least you'd be able to hang out with someone while waiting for a flight and hopefully make a friend to nerd it up with during PAX.

Either way, it would take a lot of organization to pull off.

EDIT: Looking at the AA website, they have an option to get a custom quote for people leaving from different places but going to the same destination. Might be something to look into if you have enough interest.

Oh yeah no doubt, both of those ideas were in my head... More of the 2nd option, but most airlines have major hubs that most flights to one destination commonly fly into/out of. So if we coordinated a single airliner, that can happen (Airtran seems to go cheap, and has a seat selection available, with hubs in Atlanta and Baltimore/Washington D.C.). And option 1 is most certainly a way to go if enough interest is put into this... and yes, I'm aware of the effort this will require; but it will at least give me something to do to get through the PAX home-sickness ;p.

This would be an awesome idea. I know that going to PAX, I didn't see anyone that looked like they were going. But coming back I noticed that half of the terminal was filled with people from PAX.

I've always wondered why no one tried to do this in the past.

Having people book flights individually would probably be best, then post here with airline, flight number and seat selection. Have this information kept up to date in the OP so people can see who else is on their flight, or which flight(s) they may want to book.

Actually, Ian, reverse that. The best way would be to research the best flights for a mid-day thursday arrival point from major airline hubs and post them here, then encourage people to take those flights to PAX. The more non-stop flights to Seattle you can find, the easier it will be for people to take a connecting flight in. Then have people post their connecting flight info, and as the first few people do so, add those flights in as "official" connecting flights to those hubs. This way all the work is done for people and all they have to do is book.

Yeahhh... A little off topic, but about those double posts.. seems like the Penny-Arcade forums can't handle the awesomeness of the PAX Forums, so the servers are deteriorating under our massive weight.

Back onto topic, seems like posting flight info and having people book into them prevail over group booking... Anyone still interested in that? Or should we risk some jerk breaking the group and reserving a seat smack-dab in the middle of our gathering? In that case, I guess we'll have to shout to each other across the cabin ;p.

*Note: Behavior of all PAX goers in public locations is the up most important, anything I say that may sound disrupting to do in public should never be taken seriously.

You're not going to get the airline to block off seats for you guys. Even if you did get group pricing (which would likely involve one person buying up the tickets and selling them off to the others, a responsibility nobody should have to endure), they still won't ensure your seats are together. The best thing to do is follow what I said above and when people book, they can post their requested seat numbers. This way people can do their best to be seated near each other (at least for the sake of DS mulitiplayer).

I'd be game for this. I'm in Alabama, so Atlanta would be the most logical choice for me. It's a Delta hub-- any flight in the Southeast is likely going to involve a plane change in Atlanta en route to Seattle, anyway.

Anything that I can do to reduce the amount of freaking out I usually do on planes is welcome.

That's what DS Pictochat is for. But the earlier you get people interested, the better chances you can get some good seats together. If not, it would still be nice to have someone to chat with in the terminal.

If you do get something organized, pencil me in as interested for a flight leaving from ATL. I need to decide if I want to go home to see the family in Georgia first or not. (I've been looking already a little, and AirTran and Alaska have the cheapest non-stops from Atlanta).

If this is to be followed throughed.. I think it should deserve a fitting name... with a 4-letter acronym so it doesn't feel left out from the driving and train-ing events. Some ideas? Also, any chances that international flights will require a connection in any major hub? Or are those too big for us to worry about?

An idea of mine would be the Trans-PAXian Flight Crew (TPFC).. alright don't laugh! I'm brainstorming maaan...

Some international flights only fly into specific cities (Sydney to LAX for example). so those would do well in this venture as well. As for names, how about the Trans-Continental Plane Network or something involving some of those words.

Another idea on top of this is to have folks that are arriving early meet up for lunch at The Vortex prior to arriving at the airport. We're getting ahead of ourselves, perhaps-- but hey, I'll take any excuse I can find to dive into one of their delicious burgers.

Or PAX Aerobiz for those that loved the old SNES game as much as I did. Regrettably, this venture will probably not involve buying Concordes and raking in the airfare...

    mmmm Aerobiz Supersonic. Awesome times.

On topic though, it would likely be a logistical nightmare to try and pull this off. Not impossible, but a lot of work. When I hit Seattle 08, there must have been at least 100 people on my plane from Detroit screaming about PAX until we took off, then again when we were at cruising altitude.

Well, it's a different story here because even if you're flying all the way from Seattle to Atlanta, you're only talking about four hours of travel time. If you all want to get on the same flight, then yeah, that's a lot of work. But even if your plane only has four or five other PAXers on board, that's still enough for multiplayer gaming all the way there, since the confines of the plane keeps folks within wi-fi range, and your flight will take so much less time than a road or train trip.

Don't forget the additional 1-2 hours layover at the terminal.. and if some people really want some time with other PAX people, why not plan to schedule longer layovers? Though this may increase the challenge, it decreases the risk factor of missed flights due to delays, and increases the fun.

And people can get lunch. Actually, much like the train trip, to accommodate multiple originations to central hub destinations, some people will be required to have longer layovers. So, the more people that get on this, the better an option that will be for people who wouldn't have a choice.

For a list of places you can fly non-stop to Seattle, check here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle-Tacoma_International_Airport#Terminals.2C_airlines.2C_and_destinations

Seattle is a major airport and the main hub for Alaska Airlines. In addition, there is service from every major domestic American airline (American, Continental, Delta, Southwest, United, and US) as well as many of the main smaller players (Hawaiian, JetBlue, Virgin America). In addition, the following airlines fly internationally direct to Seattle: Air Canada (Toronto, Calgray, Vancouver), Air France (Paris), Asiana (Seoul), British Airways (London), EVA (Taipei), Hainan (Beijing), Icelandair (Reykjavik), Koreon (Seoul), and Lufthansa (Frankfurt). Basically, there's no reason to not be able to get there, and not get a deal.

Now, to actually get there, you need tools. If this thread works, and y'all are able to get some group discounts, more power to you! But if you're on your own, try:
    http://www.kayak.com
    http://www.yapta.com

You can use the former to find the flights you want, and then the latter to track the flights you want. (Provided Yapta knows about the airline you want to use, otherwise, you can use kayak's less robust tracking.) The time to buy varies with demand and many other factors. I would suspect the sweet spot for many folks will be late June, but that is just a guess.

On that note, you should remove the nays entirely and just have a list of major hubs with nonstop flights to seattle (and maybe some minor ones) and people who listed they were travelling from said cities in a spoiler below, like so
    • ATL - Atlanta, GA
      person1
      person2
      person3
    • LAX - Los Angeles, CA
      person4
      person5
      person6
Then when people start coming in on connecting flights, add in the city they're coming from, for example
    • ORL - Orlando, FL --> ATL - Atlanta, GA
      person7
      person8

and when you have the flight info, update them to include all of that
    • ATL - Atlanta, GA
Continental flight 123 - ATL to SEA
      Departure Date/Time: Thu, Sept 2 0800 EDT
      Arrival Date/Time: Thu, Sept 2 1000 PDT
      Travel Time: 5 hours
      person1
      person2
      person3

and so on and so forth

Excellent observation, sir! I hadn't even considered the type of plane, but you're right-- a 767-300 would definitely be a lot more enjoyable to ride than the 737s or MD-88s that I usually get shunted onto whenever flying out of Atlanta.

You should choose at maximum 2 flights per hub, and only 1 per day. For example, for atlanta, have two flights, one departing and arriving wednesday and the other thursday. Having too many hub flights available is going to spread people out a lot, which defeats the purpose of getting everybody on the same flight.
