Make my Wii a Media (Wiidia?) Center

Okay, so now that we've got Opera on the Wii, I decided I want to have what I used to do on my Tivo: stream video and audio directly from my computer to the Wii. You ask, "Why, imbalanced, would you want to do that?"

Hear me out. My sound system is better on my television, plus it's in my main living room. Up until now, I've been plugging my MP3 player directly into my stereo, but that's what we call a stopgap. The Wii should be able to solve all of my most intimate media streaming problems, right?

Well now I've installed Orb on my main computer, which seems to work okay but not great. If you don't know what it is, Orb is a program that allows you to access your media online for FREE (www.orb.com). It works on almost any PC and conveniently also has quasi Wii-compatibility.

The problem is if you're streaming more than one media file, the flash player in Wiipera doesn't exactly like multiple files. Once it's done loading a file, it immediately goes to the next one whether you're done with the first one or not. Translation: the Internet downloads my music faster than my music can play, effectively cutting off the last 10-15 seconds of any song.

So I'm at the cusp of getting great media playback from the wonderful world of Wii, but not quite there. Does anyone know any other solutions that could be used for my neat new Nintendo console?

I'd put this in the megathread, but we've effectively killed those with fire.

Someone at platformers is programming a media streaming app for the Wii browser similar to Orb, but designed specifically for the Wii. Its just in the early phases atm I think.

Other than that, not much I can think of until Orb or Nintendo itself designs something specifically for the Wii.

I actually called mine Miidea. See if you can figure it out!

Basically put a web server on my home network, and got a flash video player (there's free ones laying around if you google). Transcoded some of my movies, made a page of links.. presto, all done.

The Wii also supports mjpeg so you can skip the flash player if you go that route.. but it will still involve transcoding for a majority of the stuff you download.

You will probably just have to wait for better software.

I'm positive Nintendo will release a Music channel eventually, allowing you to play MP3s from SD cards. Perhaps they could team up with iTunes and allow you to buy music online?

I doubt Apple has any interest in making the Wii iTunes compatible, what with just launching their own TV Media solution.

Well it'd be good if Nintendo would at least help out Orb and maybe put their name stamp on it. An "official" Orb media center for Wii would be sweet.

I wonder if someday, we will be tired of making Wii puns in every title, headline and sentence.
